A study in creative possibilities ofmaterials by constructing a type facefrom Bows, Lights, & Hair Weave.

It was encouraged to look for the truthin the material; nding what makes oneintrinsically different from others.

For the rst couple of materials I visitedthe local dollar store. As usual in thecommercial world Halloween and

Christmas decorations were both onthe sheleves.

The third material was purchased at alater date from a beauty supply shopafter experimenting with the originaltwo.

I choose the Christmasdecorations because the bowshad multiple parts to them. Forthe rst set of letters I took aminimal aproach using only onebow to make each individualletter.[left to right] Letters P Y T

The wirering of the lights had amind of their own, but could betwisted into shapes. The Q wasable to stand on its own whichintrigued me.[left to right] Letters Q B A

I explored the ideas of differenthair styles: pony tails, perms, andbraids. The braid caused the hairto shift identities in a way to astring like material.[left to right] Letters B D E

For the third letter set I tried aminimal amount of hair. Thecurve of the smaller pieces wasgreat for manipulation, but stillmaintained the integrity of thehair.[left to right] Letters D A E

Hair canbe looselyintertwined toform ovals andother organic

shapes. Alsoknotting hairgives the formdimensionbecause theknot can bestood up.

Hair has anatural ow anddirection witha lightness toits form easilycontrolledby gravity.

However,hair can bemanipulatedby brushing,teasing andcutting the hairinto pieces.

A braidedpiece of hair

conformsbetter to astraight linegreat for Ts.

The braid alsobrings a new

density to thehair which can

hold downother strands

to create loopsnessacary for

letters such as

Ps and Bs.

Tangled hairbrings in themore gross

side becauseit is unwanted.

Tangled hairforms loops

and ballswithin itself.

On the otherhand wet hair

provieds thebeauty of hair

becomeingmore delicate

and exible.
