RedaHPS pumps

Since the launch of the RedaHPS* horizontal

surface pumping system in the mid-1980s,

the design has proved to be a cost-effective

alternative to split case, vertical turbine and

 positive displacement pump designs in

many applications.

With the second generation of RedaHPS

units, designated RedaHPS G2, product

enhancements augment an excellent reputa-tion of reliability and minimal downtime in

demanding applications. Thousands of units

are operating around the world in applications

as diverse as waterflooding, brine disposal,

crude boosting, liquid propane transfer, and

 pumping pressurized hydraulic power fluid

for subsurface jet and piston pumps.

These prepackaged units are provided as

a whole system from a single-source vendor

and delivered preassembled to the site. The

modular design of factory aligned components

 permits easy maintenance and minimal

downtime when maintenance is required. All

major components can be exchanged within

2 to 3 hr and, with the exception of the

motor, will not require realignment before

the pump is restarted.

Designed for years of trouble-free service,

the RedaHPS series requires no daily main-

tenance. There are no V-belts or packing to

service, and a typical routine maintenance

schedule is a quarterly lubricant change and

component check. Quiet, smooth-running

 performance extends equipment life and

greatly reduces the chance of leakage from

associated piping. Quiet operation makes

the horizontal pumping system an ideal

choice for urban and environmentally sensi-

tive locations.

Solutions that work

The first RedaHPS unit was sold in the mid-

1980s to replace triplex pumps used for

shipping crude. Constant pump packing

leakage and vibration-induced pipeline spillshad frustrated the customer. That first unit

ran for 7 years with zero equipment failure

until the field was abandoned.

This success has been repeated numerous

times in some of the world’s harshest envi-

ronments. From the deserts of the Middle

East to the tundra of Siberia and from the

underground mines of Canada to the jungles

of South America, RedaHPS units are work-

ing 24 hr a day, 7 days a week for years of

dependable service.

Operationally enhanced by a lower center

line, the RedaHPS G2 has improved suction

characteristics and reduced vibration.Increased rigidity further reduces vibration,

allows larger motors to be used and makes

the unit less susceptible to problems stem-

ming from uneven foundation support.

From the maintenance perspective, vibration

is reduced with the G2 design. The bearing

housing runs cooler, extending bearing and

lubricating oil life. Provisions are made for

additional field service tools, such as the hoist,

to facilitate unit maintenance.

Product flexibility

The G2 design allows greater application

flexibility. For example, high- or low-

pressure mechanical seals are fitted into

a common intake, permitting multiple

uses with common components.

Pump pressure capabilities have been

enhanced. Pump downthrust capacities

have been doubled in the bearing section,

which has been designed for reduced heatgeneration. Intake hydraulic performance

has been upgraded, and additional API

610 specification compliant features have

been incorporated.

Proven applications

These low-maintenance centrifugal pumps

have created a solid reputation of depend-

ability in harsh environments, pumping

challenging liquids day in, day out.

Water disposal

With increasing water cuts worldwide, volumes for disposal are continually

increasing. The RedaHPS units pictured

have been pumping 1.18-sg brine with 3%

H2S and a light suspended solids load for

7 years nonstop. These units get an

inspection weekly, a greasing quarterly

and an oil change biannually. Minimal

maintenance is required in comparison

with the previously used competitor PD

 pumps, which required daily maintenance

with rebuilds twice a year.

Product booster service

RedaHPS units are routinely used for

high-pressure booster service for liquid

hydrocarbons. Customized pumps and

sealing equipment are available for the

specific needs of this challenging service.

A major operator in the Texas Panhandle

replaced multiple PD shipping pumps with

two RedaHPS units. The pumps have

slashed maintenance cost and eliminated

the previously used competitor pumps’

nuisance shutdowns caused by failed

 packing and valve issues.

Mine dewatering

RedaHPS units are working in open cut

and underground mines to alleviate produc-

tion problems and provide a safe working

environment. A single high-pressure pump

at the bottom of the pit avoids the need

for multiple lower pressure units. One U.S.

customer cut dewatering pump system

costs for a coal mine by a third in the

first year—while doubling dewatering

output—by switching to RedaHPS pumps.

The mine is dewatering at 10 million gal/D

[1,600 m3 /hr, 240,000 B/D]. Downtime during

pump exchange is now 2 hr—a quarter of

the time required for the previously used

split case pumps.

RedaHPS units are operating worldwide in

a wide range of industries and applications.

Custom surface pumping equipment

The building block flexibility of this modular

pumping system allows tailoring to difficult

application requirements. Whether it is the

use of ground-breaking seal technology,

multiple high-specification designs or

high-horsepower engine drive designs,

RedaHPS surface pumping equipment

meets and exceeds challenges worldwide.

In addition, RedaHPS instrumentation

upgrade options make fault annunciation,

storage of exception event values, password protection of set points, and remote moni-

toring and control an affordable reality.

Class-leading instrumentation is integral

to the unit design. This instrumentation

 protects the user’s capital investment.

Application ready

These low-maintenance centrifugal pumps

have created a solid reputation for depend-

ability as well as competitive pricing and

delivery times for an array of applications.

In addition to conventional sales models

for oilfield and industrial customers, these pumps are often used in Schlumberger

service solutions.

Design and optimization

Correct application of technology is the

critical factor for the success of any

 pumping system. Schlumberger artificial

lift engineers are experienced in the

design of horizontal pumping systems.

These qualified personnel are equipped

with state-of-the-art tools and are ready to

create a pumping system to meet specific

application requirements.

Schlumberger has long been a leader in

manufacturing technology. Highly skilled,

experienced personnel produce the highest

levels of product quality without sacrificing

efficiency, capacity or cost-effectiveness.

A detailed program of quality assurance

and quality control meets or exceeds the

rigorous demands of the petroleum industry,

our customers and Schlumberger tradi-

tions of product excellence. Inspections

both during and after manufacture ensure

that all Schlumberger products comply

with established design specifications

with complete traceability. An aggressive

testing program is in place to ensure that

our products meet industry standards and

specifications.

Installation and commissioning

RedaHPS pump systems are easy to install.

The skid package is delivered as a complete

assembly that is typically prewired with

instruments and cabling to a central junc-

tion box. Usually, intake and discharge

flanges and power hookups are the only

required connections. The extent of com-

missioning procedure is typically checking

direction of rotation, lubricant levels, andshutdown instrument settings, plus holding

the pump inside the flow and pressure

design window during startup. Site assembly

procedures are not required for RedaHPS

units because they are delivered complete.

Operation and maintenance

Critical components of the RedaHPS pumps

are easily accessible, keeping downtime

to an absolute minimum, and service tools

are designed to facilitate the process. For

example, a modular replacement pump

housing is fitted into factory-aligned clamps

and the seal is accessed at the rear pullout-

style bearing housing. The pumps can be

exchanged in 2 hr or less. As a comparison,

conventional split case pumps typically

take an entire shift to exchange a rotating

element or the two mechanical seal sets.

Service

Because the success of any system depends

on the quality and availability of service,

highly skilled Schlumberger product

specialists and engineers are available for

service and support throughout the world.

These dedicated field professionals provide

unit installation, troubleshooting, preventive

maintenance and repair of all equipment.

Repair facilities at strategic locations
