Notes:I have set selected material chronologically as I

have done it. Thought it is important to make it like this, so on crit it can be less.

Order:

1. last crit (for a quick look back)

2. work after

3. notes on work in the next two days

P.S. this is not an attempt to design any booklet, was done quickly

Material

Last crit material Some Notes from the crit

1. Work with Topography

2. Construction should be in logic with the siteHeavy engeenering and nice detailing to a building

Disover the way something was builtShift from DIY to appropriate technologiesCheapest way of putting something in river

3. Think about the idea of a room in the cityInside city block

First idea of Architecture

Building on legs sketch

Planarity and geometry of levels on site drawing

Site as a room as an idea

Last visit to the tunnel and site

- I was then mostly concetrated on tunnel, as an ex-perience. Tried to open eyes to get most of it. Two topics were interesting in the end, urban situation

and construction.

1. pic - a Room from down and “0 Ground” as I call it now.

“1. Ground“ is the city level, or the level of traffic and pedestrians.

2. pic -World of heavy engeenereing underneath the temporary construction site (6 years already)

3. pic - Temporary park garage/platform on site, built on legs

- Sketch that shows urban situation. Fragments that come together. Platform,

ground work, structure etc...

Idea of a drawing for: Situation, plan, fasade, de-

tail in a similar logic

Inhabitable structure in front of HB

- “Animal“ as Tom named it, which i really like.

Key drawing showing idea of fasade and construction, sever-

al things coming together

- Instead of building, a draw-ing showing a volume with a

smaller object inside

- Structure which is volume but not mass. Smaller mass comes from inside.

- Structure that is inhabitable, a volume instead of mass (which would be a standard developing approach)

-Wish behind that is to give space to public use instead of filling it with some massive building.

- This is also why on legs topic was interesting

- Ground floor open

Work after

Site Visit

1. Visit to the site again to observe topography and draw it up. Several construction pics. I will comment

only on few/key ones.

“a Room“from the water, middle of the

site

Temporary floor is not merged to old pavement

Merge of steel and concrete

Detail looks heavy, but it is not full

Fisherman actually use the site, I didn’t know that, also some

people for sitting on the wall and eating

Cheap construction. “U“ elements that are connected

on edges, grounded, and then covered with thin sheets. All 4 foundations are reinforced

with concrete on ends

These 3 pics, are views from down to the two streets leading to Bahnhofstrasse, and on the other

side to future Europaalle. There is a planned bridge that connects pics 2 and 3. I would

like to propose instead of bridging this, coming down to the site, and

going up again.

These views are like “doors“ in a site, in a room.

This is a connection of the Old bridge Column, and the Concrete

for construction site. Interesting they planned to take

it away like it wasnt there, that is why the plastic is there probably

Birds nest (just interesting)

Former street look of the Poststrasse, interesting because there is this heavy ground and

lighter construction on top. This is all destroyed in time

Bridge 1929, before HB was built over it as a building

Bridge 1991 after the HB roof was built

Key Archive images

Concrete legs for Garage on site

Middle if the site had some trees and ground

Tried sketching, but didnt know what the construction is down there so everything I did was

provisional and vague.

all out of addition of elements and interesection

Topography and Site plan

First I started drawing on the site plan that we have

from cadastre, and had many problems to even figure out how does the site look like, objects

on it, buildings are not updated, etc.

I decided next thing is going to be to draw a situation plan

which shows the current condition on the site from the

scratch and to show topography on it.

(Also, thought this is usefull, cause usually in the end of

diploma site plans are drawn just quickly, and here it has to be one of the key drawings.

I thought it would be nice to first have a walk drawing, a city

one, then site plan, which is like a survey or as Steffen said, like a bird flying over the site,

and then the third one to be just a room. Third one now I have

only in sketch that comes later.

Plan is to make this one a bit wider in direction of the city, to show how city stopped and then started again with Europaallee

Real situation plan surveyed

Cadastre plan

Then I did a carefull measurement with my Fathom, or distance of

spread arms (which I know from the measure course we did) which

is 192cm with me.

5 concrete wall

Foundation wall number 3

6.5 steel part

1 concrete to old bridge

Foundation Walls Survey

1 concrete to old bridge

4 foundations together

They are all a bit different. First in measures.

Second one of them has no concrete on one side

Last one has concrete under angle

etc....

quick try of an axo of a room. it was usefull to put trees in,

but it was difficult to draw this somehow...

Foundation Wallson site

Positioning of where the 4 columns beginn and how they stand under different angles

and their ending sides to the ground.

I photographed the whole front of the side wall on the right in the tunnel. To know exactly how it looks like. This is just a part

of it at beginning. It is around 220 m deep

Then placed those light structures from before on top of these Foundation walls.

Important is, instead of a screen, I decided now to position them so, that they stand parallel, and make these nice spaces in between, with framing of the site. It felt less monumental and it

was connected to the walls

Structure on them, with spaces in between

Was very interestead in these in between spaces and how the houses stand together, but was not happy with how they were positioned on foundation walls and wanted it to be more like a

sketch I did.

First view form water

It was like framing diferent

views from HB on the site with these in between spaces,

kind of like this photo

It is a pic from Hamburg made by

Guillaume with these in-between

spaces (just interesting)

Then started looking at detailing that was interesting to me from the beginning. Kind of like an animal sketch one.

(This last one is a nice pic Astrid sent me when i told her on the phone what am I working on. She accidentally seen it in

Zurich)

How wood comes on stoneNeunschwander Wood on

Brick detail

Merging of materials, like this reinforced wood,

was interesting as a topic

(When you said animal, I thought it was like Howls moving castle the cartoon

from studio Gibli. just interesting)

House sitting on the side of the wall from HdeM? Tom, was this the one you had in mind? I find it nice how subtle it is on the

wall...

This is a pic from Milano. Made before they closed and covered all the cannals.

What was interesting, was that in the middle, there was this wall that separates the water on two levels. Kind of like on

the site. (Just interesting)

Reference pics

Came back to working on the site

Idea of construction. To use the materials from the site and make infills with frame. For an example the

river pebbles and wood, metal, concrete peaces. Interesting was to shift the use of material. Once pebbles could be used in structure in concrete,

second time as infill. Just to think how to use what is there.

Houses stand on foundation walls and only on one of their legs

Second Image

With Nik discussed the idea of a room in the image among other

things. Then made it again as a room, made it wider. Was much better.

Then made a room out of same geometry Just to help me think a bit. You can see

this in a animated GIF. This was not idea of materiality, but geometry, positions,

windows, entrances, relations

Went back to draw a room, or a site plan.

Room

Think this could be a key drawing, the third one after walk, and site plan. An elevated site/room with sides and ground work on all sides

with different levels, with eating in the middle on the wall and houses on one side to HB. Kind of like Dinning room, with doors and windows

My intention was to find a way how to make construction from the foundations. Then with Boris, discussed the way of folding as structural

principle. Because it is light. He bought a chair out of thin sheets recently. It could be interesting to try to fold metal, so it is structure,

like the foundations, instead of just mass. This pic is small model from paper. It could be a corner column....so instead of heavy column of

steel, light one is made.

Detail - Construction

Heavy engeenering construction and light one on top.

folding of construction, with insulation once on outside, once on inside. Since the material should be thin, cold bridges are not big as if they

were I profiles or Square steel.

Key thoughts:

- to go back a bit, Hidden Zurich was research to look at places no one looks with certain methodology we set up.

- Proposal should have this same, look at what is there, but use it in a different way :

1. Build were no one would build.

2. In a way that is different from Standard building methods(Mass and heavy insulated buildings)

3. Wish is to build normal construction instead of some “unreal one”, so to invent how construction is used and placed with existing, instead of being independent construction method.

4. To build on existing infrastructure-that is why it is surveyed preciously

5. to use less possible ground from public ground, when use it, to make it public like ground work, shore work

6. to make new ground for city, with level on water, instead of bridging the site

7. detail to be light, come out of existing. (this is why i think folding could be very exciting way to go, since it is light, and

makes structure without mass, like the foundations)

8. to use material from site, like pebbles for ground and fassade

9. to make a room in a city, with access and windows

10. put a building on one wall

11. to merge in detailing like it is done on a site

12. to try volume instead of just mass

Plan in next two days was:

1. draw floor plans (apartments)2. test fassade with structure

3. draw a construction, test if folding works in a structure and with insulation

4. make “a room” in a site model
