ExposureRoute Symptom Treatment

Inhalation: Sore throat, shortness of breathcoughing, and congestion.

Remove from exposure to fresh air. Seekmedical attention in severe cases or if recoveryis not rapid.

Eye Contact: Irritation to eyes and mucousmembranes.

Irrigate with water until no evidence ofchemical remains. Obtain medicalattention.

Skin Contact: Irritation, itching, dermatitis Wash with soap and drench with water.Remove contaminated clothing andwash before reuse.

Ingestion: Irritation to mucous membranes. Give large quantities of water or milkimmediately. Obtain medical attention.

After first aid, get appropriate medical attention.

Note to physician: Exposure may aggravate acute or chronic asthma, emphysema andbronchitis.

Special Precautions/Procedures: None indicated.

waterways.Fire-Fighting Equipment: Because fire may produce toxic thermal decomposition products,

wear a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) with a full facepiece operated in pressure-demand or positive-pressure mode.

Section S·lAceidental Release MeasuresSpill/ Leak Procedures:Small Spills / Leaks:

Large Spills I Leaks:Containment:

Wear appropriate PPE - See Section 8.Spills can be neutralized with an alkaline material such as causticsoda. Leaks may be located by spraying the area with ammoniumhydroxide solution which forms a white fume in the presence of sulfurdioxide.Large spills should be handled according to a predetermined plan. For large spills dike far ahead of contaminated runoff for later disposal.

Sectior17 ..;I-Iandling and Storage IHandling Precautions:Storage Requirements:

Avoid contact with product. Do not breath dust or vapor.Avoid heat or moisture. Store in areas, away from heat and moistureand protected from physical damage. Segregate from acids andoxidizers.

I............·<1

Ventilation: Provide general or local exhaust ventilation systems to maintainairborne concentrations below OSHA limits (Sec. 2). Local exhaustventilation is preferred because it prevents contaminant dispersioninto the work area by contrOlling it at the source.Follow OSHA respirator regulations (29 CFR 1910.134) and, ifnecessary, wear a MSHAINIOSH-approved respirator. Selectrespirator based on its suitability to provide adequate workerprotection for given working conditions, level of airbornecontamination, and presence of sufficient oxygen. For emergency ornon-routine operations (cleaning spills, reactor vessels, or storagetanks), wear a SCBA. Warning! Air-purifying respirators do not protectworkers in oxygen-deficient atmospheres.

Protective Clothing I Equipment: Wear protective gloves, boots, and clothing when necessary toprevent excessive skin contact. Wear protective eyeglasses orgoggles, per OSHA eye- and face-protection regulations (29 CFR1910J33).Make emergency eyewash stations, showers, and washing facilitiesavailable in the work area.Remove this material from personal protective equipment as needed.Do not eat, drink, or smoke in work areas. Practice good personalhygiene after using this material, especially before food or beverageconsumption.

Stability:Polymerization:Chemical Incompatibilities:

Stable under normal conditions.Hazardous polyrnerizatlon will not occur. In the presence of acid, sodium thiosulfate may release toxic andhazardous fumes of sulfur oxides, including sulfur dioxide. Acutepoisoning from sulfur dioxide is rare because the gas is easilydetected. It is so irritating that contact cannot be tolerated.Symptoms include coughing, hoarseness, sneezing, tearing, andbreathing difficulty. However, workers who cannot escape highaccidental exposure may suffer severe pulmonary damage which canbe fatal. Contact with powdered potassium, sodium metals, alkali, and oxidizing agents produce violent reactions. Reacts with waterand steam to form corrosive sulfurous acid. Reacts with chlorates toform unstable chlorine dioxide.

Conditions to Avoid: Avoid excessive heat, or open flame, and moisture.Hazardous Decomposition Products: May release hazardous sulfur dioxide gas.

Eye Effects (rabbit):Skin Effects (rabbit):Carcinogenicity:Chronic Effects:

Not available. Acute Inhalation Effects (rat): Not available. Not available. Acute Oral Effects (rat): Not availableIARC, NTP, and OSHA do not list sodium thiosulfate as a carcinogen.Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause dermatitis, and sensitizationreactions. Exposure to asthmatic, atopic and sulfite sensitive individuals mayresult in severe bronchioconstriction and reduced levels in forced expiratoryvolume. Acidic decomposition of sodium thiosulfate may release toxic andhazardous fumes of sulfur oxides, including sulfur dioxide, which may causepermanent pulmonary impairments from acute and chronic exposure. TheImmediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH) level for S02 is 100 ppm.
