YOUR FAMILY TRIP OF A LIFETIME

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport you transfer straight to the Serengeti National Park by means of a light aircraft flight and your first night in Tanzania is already spent under the Serengeti skies. 4 nights at Dunia Camp gives you time to enjoy the activities and the area and also to unwind from the hustle of day to day life. With your own private vehicle and guide, your game drives can depart at any time and can be as long or as short as the children would like.

Via a light aircraft flight straight out the Serengeti you travel to the island of Zanzibar, and to your own private beach house at Matemwe. Attended to by a personal butler, with meals prepared as and when you choose, there is a very high possibility that you will struggle to leave the luxurious isolation of the house.

Relax and unwind in the hammock or at your private pool, or venture across to the swimming pools and bar at the main lodge. If you are feeling active, you can partake in one of the many daily excursions on offer around the island.

After 4 nights in this paradise you will undoubtedly feel relaxed and rejuvenated, and will most likely wish you had more time.

“We can’t thank the Dunia team enough for their high attention to detail and a level of service you would normally receive from a 5 star resort…let alone in the middle of the Serengeti! Truly a magical experience!”

Trip Advisor review written by US clients who stayed at Dunia in January 2014.

NATIONAL PARKSThe name ‘Serengeti’ (or more specifically “Serengit”) is derived from the Maasai language meaning “Endless Plains”, and this is the only way to describe the area. Yes, while there are riverine areas, acacia bush and kopjies, it is the vast grassy plains that roll over the landscape that define the Serengeti.

Each year around the same time the great wildebeest migration begins in the Ngorongoro area of the southern Serengeti of Tanzania. From here, the movement of the wildebeest and other grazers will start their move north, looking for new grazing pastures. January to March is the beginning of the calving season. This is because there is plenty of rain ripened grass available for the approximate 750,000 zebra, 1.2 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of other plains game.

During February the wildebeest spend their time in the south eastern part of the ecosystem, grazing and giving birth to approximately 500,000 calves within a 2 to 3 week period: a remarkably synchronized event. Few calves are born ahead of time and of these, hardly any will survive when mixed with older calves from earlier in the previous year, and so are easier preys.

As the rains end in May the animals start moving North West, into the areas around the Grumeti River, where they typically remain until late June. July sees the main migration of wildebeest, zebra and eland heading north, arriving on the Kenyan border and then into the Masai Mara late July/August for the remainder of the dry season (the Thomson’s and Grant’s Gazelles move only east/west and don’t cross into Kenya).

In early November with the start of the short rains the migration starts moving south again, to the short grass plains of the south east, usually arriving in December in plenty of time for calving in February. It is estimated that some 250,000 wildebeest die during the Great Migration (a total of around 800 kilometers). Death is usually from thirst, hunger, exhaustion, or predation.

In addition to the wonder of the Migration, the Serengeti eco-system offers great year-round game viewing, with large numbers of predatory cats, some of the last remaining free-roaming Black rhino in East Africa as well as most other wildlife species, so regardless of the time of year visitors head to the Serengeti a very good safari experience is likely.

YOUR ACCOMMODATION

Dunia camp is a relatively small camp, with just 8 tents and is considered ‘semi-permanent’ – meaning that while it is completely mobile, it remains in the same location for most of the year.

Each of the spacious tents feature an en-suite bathroom and private veranda overlooking the Moru Kopjes in the prime wildlife areas of central and southern Serengeti; Dunia Camp combines elements of style and luxury with an incredible wildlife experience.

The Great Migration generally passes through this area twice each year, but it is especially known for its abundance of lion, leopard and cheetah and the rare chance to see the illustrious black rhino.

The tents feature either large, king sized double or single beds, with an enclosed bathroom, flushing toilet and ‘bucket’ showers.

A favourite experience at Dunia Camp is watching the spectacular sunrise over the African landscape from the comfort of a warm bed. Yes – you can literally see the sunrise from your bed inside the tent!

AREA INFORMATIONZanzibar is a semi-autonomous state of Tanzania,

in East Africa. It is comprised of the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 25–50 kilometers off the coast of the mainland, consisting of numerous small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, informally referred to as Zanzibar), and Pemba.

Arab and Portuguese traders visited the region in early times, and it was controlled by Omanis in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Britain established a protectorate (1890) that became an independent sultanate in December 1963 and a republic after an uprising in January 1964.

In April 1964 it joined Tanganyika to form a new republic that was renamed Tanzania in October 1964.

The capital of Zanzibar, located on the island of Unguja, is Zanzibar City, and its historic centre, known as Stone Town, is a World Heritage Site. We recommend spending at least one day here, exploring the cobbled streets and antique shops, also a plethora of wonderful Spice Farms in its interior. Tropical warm waters of the Indian Ocean lap at the white sands of the Zanzibar coastline, making it a stunning beach destination. Deep sea fishing, diving, snorkeling and other watersports abound here in the warm waters.

Few international flights use Zanzibar airport, however, connections through to Dar Es Salaam and even Kilimanjaro and Nairobi are very good so Zanzibar is the perfect beach destination to end your safari.
