COVID-19 Relief Update June 2020
The COVID-19 worldwide pandemic has had devastating impacts on countless people. For the most vulnerable, the shutting down of whole countries has quickly led to
hunger and despair. Many are day laborers who regularly “live on the edge”. Any disruption in work results in immediate need for their families.
Harvesters International is responding by providing food and encouragement to the
hungry in both Africa and Asia. Besides food relief, we are furnishing vital sanitation supplies and educating communities on virus protection.

Vijayawada, India The hastily implemented nationwide lockdown
resulted in many hardships throughout the country. Migrant workers were stranded without jobs or
transportation to their home villages. Day laborers and others living on the margin were almost
immediately in more dire need than normal. Over 100 food packets are being prepared and delivered each
day. Extra support is now being provided to the widows and HIV patients, which we regularly serve
with monthly food assistance.
Southeastern South Sudan: Our workers have educated residents in numerous villages on
how to prevent infection. They have distributed soap to help with hygiene, along with food
and seeds. Fear is very common among the people who have suffered greatly the last few
years due to civil war and other violence.
Southeastern South Sudan has an
extreme reliance on food imports, with
50% or more of their food brought in
from Kenya and other countries. Many
families are facing an exceedingly
difficult time obtaining adequate food in
the upcoming months. Harvesters has
given seeds to 1400 families for their
farms; however the planting season has
past and food distribution continues to
be a critical need in the area.
.
Pallisa, Uganda: The strictly enforced shutdown highly restricts movement of people. Food prices have soared, and the meager income of many people has abruptly stopped.
Medical emergencies are occurring, including issues with pregnant women, due to the lack of transportation. Harvesters has distributed food and other needed supplies.
Near Ujjain, India:
While the COVID-19 team was delivering food in a poor village, a woman name Geeta approached them sobbing. She, her sick
husband and three children had not eaten in two days. When our team provided food,
Geeta “blessed all the unknown donors” who fed her children.
Feeding efforts continue in these poor
communities hit hard by the shutdown. Government efforts to alleviate hunger are
simply inadequate to meet the existing needs.
There are many elderly people and
widows in the area with great needs.
This is Halima who lost her husband to
HIV. She struggles to care for herself
and her grandchildren. Recently
Harvesters provided her with food and
other needed items. Reaching the
most vulnerable is a priority.
Goma / North Kivu, D.R. Congo: Our leaders recorded educational radio messages that are being aired throughout the North Kivu region. These are informing residents on how to protect themselves from COVID-19. Sanitation stations have been set up in
Goma to promote hand washing. Hygiene information is provided at the stations. Food assistance for widows is being provided.
Harvesters’ work in India includes serving widows and also operating a school for over 200
destitute children who otherwise would receive little education. We have been providing
food for their families as often as possible during the shutdown.
