MATCH.COM NAPA AND SONOMA Trip Overview The old-world landscape of Napa and Sonoma counties may sit on the movie-magic producing coast of the world, but these California miles open up to nothing less than the ideal setting for a classic adventure story. While hiking, biking, and exploring, we immerse ourselves in a land stitched together by stubborn farmers and captured by storytelling giants like Jack London and Robert Louis Stevenson. Take a smile-inducing breath of fresh air first thing in the morning, your eyes falling on the storybook landscape that’s to be the back drop of our journey. The climate and topography, both perfect for producing world-class wines, are also perfect for fantastic outdoor explorations that fill the pages of our days with hikes to pristine waterfalls and bike rides across vineyards and famed valleys. Between green vines and red wines, this trip reads like a good book as we spend each day discovering the beauty and romance of one of California’s most scenic pieces of paradise and appreciating the joy and companionship of new friends. Discover why “I have everything to make me glad I’m alive…” flowed from Jack London’s pen as he surveyed the hills, the fog, the sun, and the grapes that made up his own slice of paradise, Beauty Ranch, just outside of Sonoma. Little did George C. Yount (the planter of the first vineyard here in 1838) know that those vines so patiently nurtured then would spiral into a place now that captures the quintessence of living life to the fullest, providing all the ingredients for a timeless modern-day adventure. You’ll journey home with a week’s worth of adventures and a wealth of memories and friendships to treasure for years to come. “I ride over my beautiful ranch. Between my legs is a beautiful horse. The air is wine. The grapes on a score of rolling hills are red with autumn flame. Across Sonoma Mountain, wisps of sea fog are stealing. The afternoon sun smolders in the drowsy sky. I have everything to make me glad I am alive.” -Jack London

Itinerary & Highlights:

DAY 1 SUNDAY October 26: ARRIVAL IN SAN FRANCISCO – MEET AND GREET / DINNER IN SONOMA Valleys of world-famous vineyards. Forests of soaring redwoods. Quiet pastoral landscapes. And the dramatic Pacific Coast. They could be four separate adventures, but they're not. This is Northern California. For some it's like a pilgrimage. For others, a retreat. For you it's a remarkable trip and an incredible adventure. After departing San Francisco Oakland Airport we head for wine country and our hotel in Sonoma. Our journey together starts with wine and bocce ball by the pool followed by a fun evening at one of our favorite local Sonoma restaurants, Breakaway Café, where we can spend the evening getting to know one another over drinks and delicious food.

DAY 2 MONDAY October 27: JACK LONDON HISTORIC STATE PARK & BENZIGER WINERY AND FARM Perched high on Sonoma Mountain with over 1400 pristine acres and 26 miles of trails to explore, plus a rich, colorful, and well preserved history; Jack London State Park is a hikers paradise. Options for strolls to long mountain climbs abound today, however our standard route takes a moderate approach balancing the best of the historic and natural features of this rich biome. We begin with a fascinating visit to London’s Cottage and nearby winery ruins before venturing past the grapevines and into the backcountry trails. On our storybook hike we will soak in the distant views of Mount Diablo from May’s Clearing and hear birds singing along Graham Creek, London's Wildwater Creek' he wrote about in his novel The Valley Of the Moon. After looping through the historic orchard, past ancient redwoods, and London’s Lake we will conclude our journey with a picnic beneath the Eucalyptus planted by Jack himself before taking our tired legs down the hill to Benziger. The region’s most distinctive and expressive vineyard will host us on a tour of earth, air, water, and wine! The Benziger bio-dynamic farm and winery was already peppered with wine grapes before it was a winery, it's rumored they were just a cover, literally. During the '60s the vines were supposedly used as a cover crop for marijuana growing on the property. Most of that crop has been eradicated from the property, but some plants still pop up every now and then. One of the biggest contributions Benziger has made to the wine growing process is their efforts in water conservation. So much that they earned NRDC's Green Growing Award for Water Stewardship. The vineyard recycles a mind-blowing 2 million gallons of water every year through home-spun wetlands and recycling ponds.

DAY 3 TUESDAY October 28, 2014: BIKE THE SILVERADO TRAIL THROUGH SCENIC WINE COUNTRY After a delicious breakfast, we depart straight from our lodging to explore, swirl, sniff, sip and cycle our way through Napa Valley. Pedal through quaint towns and vineyards from St. Helena to Napa, tasting world-class vintages at wineries along the Silverado Trail, which runs the tranquil and scenic eastside of the world-famous wine region. The road began as a trail built in 1852 after flooding made the main Napa Valley road impassible. Silver was discovered in Napa Valley in 1858, and wine production began in the 1870s, making the road an important trade route and becoming the first road from Napa to Calistoga. The area thrived with the growing prominence of California wine. One of the wineries on the road, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, made Napa Valley world famous in 1976 when it won the Judgment of Paris, a promotional wine competition among French and California wines. Today, at least 40 of the Valley's more than 200 wineries are along or near the road.

DAY 4 WEDNESDAY October 29, 2014: BUENA VISTA TOUR WITH WINE TASTING AND WATERFALL HIKE Our day begins with breakfast at our hotel followed by heading away from the cities and venturing into the countryside for an afternoon hike. Stretch your legs as we stroll through lush green forest out to a very scenic waterfall called Devils Punchbowl. It is very popular in the summer as a swimming hole, but perfect year round to escape the city. Our guides will pack a tasty picnic lunch that we can enjoy while relaxing and listening to the sounds forest birds and rushing waters. Later in the day, we will return to the hotel to freshen up prior to taking a tour of the first premium winery in California. Before there were vineyards in every valley north of San Francisco, before Napa and Sonoma were household names, before there was a California wine world at all, there was Buena Vista. Founded in 1857, Buena Vista is California’s oldest winery, and its history is as colorful as it is proud. Today, the legend is being re-born under the vision of Jean-Charles Boisset. Just outside the town of Sonoma, the original winery is now a California Historic Landmark, and home to its Winery, Tasting Room, and Visitor’s Center. We will conclude the day by spending an evening in downtown Napa and exploring the large variety of tasting rooms before savoring a hearty dinner at the Bounty Hunter, renowned for its wine bar and smokin’ barbeque.
