Chairman’s
Corner
Good evening and welcome to all the officials staff
and players of Andover New Street . I hope you
enjoy your brief stay at the nest.
I’m going to start by wishing Benj, our amazing 1st
team manger a full and speedy recovery. Benj has
been under the weather recently, not that anyone
would notice because Ben being Ben he just gets on
with it. After speaking with him this week I know
he’s well on the mend and as ever rounding up the
troops for today’s game. It was great to hear how
excited he is about player availability for the first
time this season. Apart from Marcel( suspension) we
are pretty much full strength.
Last Saturday down at Ringwood it was great to get a
positive result in The Fa Vase. A vase run always
alluded me as a player so let’s hope as a chairman
my fortunes will change! 1 step closer to Wembley
hey!!! Once again we were up against it with players
being un available so getting a win was even more
enjoyable. It was great to see 2 of the Youth players
Ethan Daubney and Ben Gulliver make there first
team debuts. They are both very exciting players and
along with Seb Osmond that’s 3 16 year olds that
have graduated to the first team already this season.
As a club we very much believe if your good enough
your old enough. The reserves also had 6 of the
under 18’S in there squad on Saturday, we really are
doing things right at this special club of ours. The win
at Ringwood rounded off a superb cup week for the
club after beating Laverstock on Tuesday evening in
the Wilts cup. I’m the first one to jump on the lads
for lack of discipline. It’s a pet hate of mine BUT
against lavvy when we went down to 10 men we
were excellent and fully deserved our penalty
shootout win!!! Marcel was very unlucky to be sent
off . Thankfully Tj showed how much he loves a big
local derby game ,much to the delight of the away
fans!!!! My heart was in my mouth when Sam
“Snake Hips “Howe nearly broke the bar with his
penalty!! Thank god the cross bar took the full force
of it otherwise the ball would ended up in Coombe
bisseett. Sam is a very popular lad in and around the
club and I know he’s been getting some stick for that
miss!! Head of the ball next time Snakey!!!
I would like to give a big welcome to Isla Cox. Isla has
come on board as the new club Masseuse/physio
and has already raised the professionalism at the
club massively. Isla treatment of the lads and the
injuries they have picked up has been first class and I
know I speak from all the players and management
at the club we are delighted to have her on board!
Let’s hope the lads can keep performing how they
have been and continue our superb start to the
season
As always thank you for your support and let’s get
the Red robin bobbing up that league.
Enjoy the game and can I wish you all a Safe journey
home.
Up the robins
Best wishes
Dan

Downton Football Club was formed in September
1905, following a meeting which had been arranged by
the Rev J.H. Phillips.
Early results were not very encouraging. However,
after the First World War in 1919 the Robins fared
better after entering the Salisbury & District League.
They gained promotion from Division Two to Division
One in 1920, but returned to Division Two in 1924. The
1924/25 season saw Downton become the first
winners of the
Norman Court Cup, beating Alderbury in the final.
They won the competition again in 1932, 1934, 1935,
1936 and 1939 and then on three further occasions
after World War II.
Downton won the Wilts Junior Cup for the first time in
1949/50, defeating Atworth 6-2 in the final. The
following season, the club entered the Bournemouth
League and gained promotion to Division One, winning
the
championship five times. The 1958/59 season saw
them secure promotion to Senior Division One,
winning the title seven times between 1959/60 and
1967/68 – an
achievement which resulted in Bournemouth FA
presenting the club with a special plaque.
Downton also won the Bournemouth Senior Cup in
1962/63 and 1979/80 and the Senior League Cup in
1961/62, 1963/64 and 1966/67.
In order to progress further, Downton joined the
Hampshire League in 1968/69, winning promotion in
1971/72. More promotions followed in 1978/79 and
1979/80.
In 1992/93, The Robins were elected to the Wessex
League – the club's reserves joining its Combination
League. The 1995/96 campaign proved one of the
club's best ever – winning both the Wessex League
Cup and the Russell Cotes Cup, while its reserves
finished runners-up in the Combination Cup. They also
entered the FA Vase for the first time.
A highest ever league finish of eighth was achieved in
the 1996/97 season. The club entered the FA Cup for
the first time in 1997/98. Downton enjoyed county
success in the Wilts Senior Cup, winning it in 1979/80
and 1980/81, and finishing runners-up in 1955/56,
1991/92 and 1994/95.
Closer to home, The Robins lifted the Salisbury
Hospital Cup in 2008/09, beating Shrewton United in
the final having defeated Laverstock & Ford and
Amesbury Town en-route. They retained the cup the
following season when they beat Chalke Valley in the
final, staged at Salisbury City's Raymond McEnhill
Stadium.
The 2010/11 campaign proved a highly memorable
one. As well as securing promotion to the Premier
Division after being crowned Division One champions
in what was the league's 25th anniversary season,
Downton also enjoyed their best ever run in the FA
Vase, reaching the second round for the first time.
A number of other accolades followed - Jeff Softley
picked up the Manager of the Year honour at the
league's 25th anniversary celebrations with four
players – Charles Aldridge, Calum Robertson, Nick
Turpin and Declan McGregor – all named in the
Division One Team of the Year.
Downton finished 6th in their first year back in the
Sydenhams Premier League, their highest finish ever.
They also won the Hospital Cup again, winning 4-0
against Laverstock and Ford.
The Club were relegated back into Division One in
2013-14, having remained there since with a number
of mid-table finishes. In 2017-18, the Youth section
was added to the club, with four teams now playing
under the Downton badge, ranging from Under 12’s to
Under 18’s. The club remains committed to building
out a Senior and Youth squad for the area to be proud
of, with the aim of having a full range of 10 youth
clubs over the next few years.

Wessex League Cup
Saturday morning, and after having me feathers puffed, it's time to think about the afternoons action. Totton and
Eling are coming to the Nest, and despite being down the wrong end of the table, we can take nothing for granted.
Fawley provided to be an extremely tough cookie. East Cowes Victoria away will be another rock hard walnut to
crack.
It's teeming with rain, and a Robins duty is to check the tweets (sorry, couldn't resist it). The Wessex League
Twitter provides good information. Hythe and Dibden, off, Moneyfields, off, Amesbury Town, i imagine a soggy
pudding, off. Back up plan, Shaftesbury v Alresford Town. Ringwood Town, off, that's getting a bit close to the Nest!
Game on at Downton though. It has absolutely bucketed down en route, time to head back methinks.
Just past Sixpenny Handley and the rain has really done it's worst. Just off the Cranborne roundabout and I know.
Pull over, check What's App. Game off. Back to Shaftesbury. 4G, gametime. At least there's a good game in store.
Whatever your view on 4G surfaces, on a day like today they are vital if you like non league football. Four clubs
have them, Hamworthy United, Shaftesbury, AFC Stoneham and Alton FC. On Wednesday we saw a thrilling game
at AFC Stoneham, with visitors Hamble Club winning 2-1. So glad to finally visit the Stoneham Lane Complex.
Hamble Club are game on today. They reach half time 0-5 behind to Hamworthy United. Match abandoned. Dorset
Hammy weren't happy understandably. Hamble Club have had some strange results this season!
So, to Coppice Street, a short distance from home. Alresford Town always do well when I watch them. They put in
an organised performance, and win 2-1. Ollie Cherret's 'Rockies' (here I go again!), have slid to 18th in the league,
only one place above an Amesbury Town side I saw lose 9-2 there in August.
It was an early postponement for tonight's visitors Andover New Street today. The 'Swifts' stand in the way of us
continuing to be successful in the Wessex League cup. This will be an extremely tough ask, especially with Laps
(Marcel Laptas) suspended.
We have also drawn Devizes Town in the Wiltshire Senior Cup. The Toolstation Western League Division 1 side
have had a difficult season, and were hopeful of three points on Saturday against Portishead Town. They lost 2-4 at
Nursteed Road.
The FA Vase sees us travel to Royal Wootten Bassett Town. We
played the Hellenic Premier League side in a pre season friendly on
the 4G, losing 3-0 with a team unrecognisable from now. All I hope
is that we give it a go. With Ben Smith at the helm, we certainly will.
It's not a favourable draw, however Downton seem to like the
challenge. Fawley AFC and Totton and Eling are the real tough
cookies when you support the Robins!
Support your team, support the Wessex League.
Rocky.
A Robins lot. Alresford Town in action at Shaftesbury on Saturday,
after rain meant the Totton and Eling game was postponed.

It is our first look at one of my favourite leagues in the country , the Toolstation Western League . The league now covers clubs from Dorset , Wiltshire , Somerset , Gloucester , Devon and now Cornwall. Over the summer has seen a number of new clubs join the league and a few re join it after a few seasons away. The new clubs consist of Millbrook Afc who I had the pleasure of visiting while on holiday in Cornwall over the summer. A Superbly run club very similar to our own ( Downton Fc ). Mousehole fc are another new club to the league who played Millbrook AFC when I visited them over in Early August. Mousehole are a club going places on and off the field in my opinion . Their only problem long term might be geographical as they are out on a limb on their own quite close to Lands End. Another Cornish new club to the league is one of my favourite clubs Helston Athletic . Helston are a superbly run club run by great people. Steve Massey ( Ex Afc Bournemouth) is the manager and man who wants to run his club as professionally as he can as they hopefully move up the leagues . We took a Downton youth side their a few years back and the welcome they gave us was very special. Last of the new Cornish clubs is Saltash Utd. Kimberley Park their ground is a gem and they are a club who have done well for years in the SWP league so I am glad they have made the step up into the Western League The last of the new clubs is AEK Boco. They came from the Gloucestershire leagues and ply their trade now in Western League 1. They have a lot of local teams to compete against in that part of Bristol but I am sure they will do well. I look forward to visiting them in the future. 2 teams have rejoined the Western leagues are after few seasons away- First up is Ilfracombe Town who have spent a few seasons in the SWP league East . Marlborough Park is another gem of a ground to visit - highly recommend Last up is one local to us . Gillingham Town have rejoined from the Dorset Premier League . Since their last days in the Western League they have moved to a new ground . After a few seasons at ground they now have lights which allowed them to move back up to Step 6. Finally one more club was sideways moved over the summer from the Hellenic League into the Western League when the Fa re jigged the leagues. Tytherington Rocks are another Gloucestershire side who I have yet to visit have been moved across. They play at Hardwicke playing fields . The Western leagues are always strong and tough leagues To compete in and I sure this season will now be even stronger with all these new clubs.
Around the Leagues
Andover New Street Football Club was started in the early
1890’s by the vicar of St. Mary’s church Rev. (later Canon) E.R.
Braithwaite. The initial name was St Mary’s Youth, before
becoming New Street FC in 1897. New Street in those times
was the working class part of Andover with the team’s first
pitch on Farmer Dance’s field, which is now called Dances Close
of New Street.
Rev. Braithwaite a keen temperance man was looking for a way
to keep the young men of New Street out of the several pubs,
ale houses and bottle shops found there. He came up with the
idea of a football team and the only qualification required was
that the player had to live in New Street.
The team was successful and lasted until the 1950’s when
unfortunately it folded and New Street FC was reformed by Mr
Bob Bryden, who was the landlord of the Bishop Blaize pub in
1961. Even back in those old days, the club has always had a
swift in its emblem. They played in the Andover & District
League, before moving up to the North Hants League. In 1976
the club joined Division Four of the Hampshire League, which
they won at the first attempt, earning promotion to Division
Three. The club went on to win Division Three the following
season and were promoted to Division Two.
When the Wessex League was formed in 1986, several clubs
left the Hampshire League and New Street were promoted to
Division One. They finished bottom of Division One in 1989/90
and were relegated to Division Two. The following season saw
the club relegated again as they finished second-from-bottom
of Division Two. However, they were Division Three runners-up
in 1991/92 to secure an immediate promotion back to Division
Two. The club finished as runners-up in Division Two the
following season and were promoted back to Division One.
Division One was renamed the Premier Division in 1999, and in
2001 the club was renamed Andover New Street. They were
Premier Division runners-up in 2003/04 and also won the
League Cup. However, it was the final season of the Hampshire
League, as it merged into the Wessex League, with the club
becoming members of the new Division Two, which was
renamed Division One in 2006. The club continued to battle
near the bottom of the league for several years until the
celebrated campaign in the 2017-18 season that saw Manager
John Smith and assistant Iain Meechan guide the Street to
promotion and so nearly crowned champions of Division One,
only to lose their final two matches and finish runners-up to
Christchurch but still earning promotion to the Premier
Division. The Street did achieve a cup double that season by
winning the North Hants Senior Cup and Andover Open Cup.
The club also won Programme of the Year for Division One.
The following season saw New Street in the Wessex Premier
for the first time in their history and the club also entered the
FA Cup for the first time and they progressed to preliminary
qualifying round by defeating Romsey Town 4-0. New Street
also welcomed Portsmouth to Foxcotte Park in the Hampshire
Cup and in front of a record crowd of 532, progressed to the
next round with a 2-1 victory. Despite the club getting
relegated at the end of the season, there was further success
as the club retained both the Andover Open Cup and the North
Hants Senior Cup after a thrilling final against Alresford Town,
played at the Camrose.
The 2019-20 season saw the club start slowly but then go on an
impressive 12 league game winning streak that put them in
strong position for promotion until the global pandemic
resulted in the season being stopped and called null and void.
The club have had a few grounds, sharing the Walled Meadow
with Andover FC, Taskers Sports Ground, Andover Road Sports
Ground and Charlton Sports Centre before settling at their
present base of Foxcotte Park in 1992. In the same year, a local
youth club GVM Arken was invited to become the club’s youth
section and New Street Youth F.C. came into existence.
Recognition of the club’s commitment to the local community
came when in April 2005 the club were granted F.A. Charter
Standard Community Club status the highest accolade a
football club can achieve. In 2012 and 2016 the Street were
named as Hampshire’s F.A.’s Community Club of the Year.
Andover New Street FC has a long history of providing football
specifically for Girls with a Ladies’ team starting in 1995. In
2012, Footy4Girls was created, a football group that was for
any girl that wanted to play. The group grew steadily during
2012 with around ten 8-11 year olds attending on a regular
basis. Footy4Girls has continued to grow with each week
seeing 40 plus girls training and playing matches, with four
sides in the Winchester Leagues.
Always community minded in 2005, a few number of our
coaches went into Icknield School, a facility for children with
severe learning difficulties, to run weekly coaching sessions.
These were so enjoyable and successful that our inclusive
group Streets Ahead was formed two years later, to enable
youngsters or adults with physical or learning difficulties, who
love to play football, but are unable for a variety of reasons to
take part in mainstream clubs, to participate in the game.
Gradually the club has developed in size and has become a
leading force in providing football experiences for all.
The club now looks forward to the challenge of earning
promotion back to the Wessex Premier Division

Penalties -
Downton 4 (Moseley, Ovington, Dible, L.Wilkins)
Laverstock & Ford 3 (Bourner, Ward, Campbell- Fletcher)
The ten man Robins gained revenge for their 2018/19 Wilshire Senior Cup defeat to Laverstock and
Ford, with a comeback and a penalty shoot out win to reach the 2nd round.
This all Wessex League 1st Division tie was a topsy turvy affair. By 34 minutes Russell Jones and Dominic
Jackson had put the Bulldogs 2-0 ahead. TJ Moseley replying for Downton before the break.
Laverstock, as ever, were industrious, and called for everything. Marcel Laptas, was dismissed for a
second yellow. The former AFC Stoneham striker the third Downton player to be sent off vs Laverstock
in one month!
We have little or know luck against our visitors, and tonight was looking to be no exception to that rule.
However, a Moseley penalty rescued the tie, and took the game to spot kicks. Surely not...
Somehow, the Robins saw off the spectre of 2018/19, and also a couple of weeks ago to win the shoot
out 4-3 with Moseley, Jamie Ovington, Sam Dible all planting one past Alexis Aguer in the visitors net,
with Liam Wilkins scoring the winning penalty.
Downton are now at home to Devizes Town, Marlborough Town are through with a bye, Malmesbury
Vics entertain Wroughton, whilst Bemerton Heath Harlequins have a home tie with Trowbridge Town.

Managers Notes on season so far -
We are competing in a strong league with some very good opponents however It’s now 7
weeks into the season and we have played some fantastic football and competed in every
game as of yet.
The squad is always being worked on and we
look to better ourselves week in and week out!
To date we have fielded 6 different 16 year olds
from within the club and they have all featured
within league matches showing a clear path
into men’s football for these young lads
As a club all we want for this side is to carry on
competing and battling in every game we play

On behalf of every one here involved at the Football club we would like to say a massive thank you for all of our amazing and generous sponsors. During such a difficult time the
generosity from so many local business has been incredible. The money we have received will make everything run easier for us and help us to provide better facilities and equipment
for every team we run, from the u5s all the way up to the first team. We hope to meet as many of you in person over the next few home games to say a personal thank you.
Thank You To Our Sponsors
This Day in Our History
Shaftesbury FC 9 Amesbury Town 2. The result says it all as the 'Rockies' played their first
Wessex League Premier Division fixture on their new 4G pitch. The team is now managed by
Ollie Cherret and Wayne Smith, who was relentless in his boss chat from the newly built
dugouts.
The new facility looks great with widened walkways and the pitch more sunken with new
solid fencing. Also in bad weather days it guarantees me Wessex League football on the
doorstep. They are also doing print programmes again which is great and another possible
stock channel for our Wessex League archive at the Emporium.
Amesbury have two former Robins on show. Scott Hassle briefly joined us from Bemerton
Heath Harlequins and he scores the visitors second goal to make it 5-2. I'm also pleased to
see Lawrence Larbi out there. He played for us here a year ago in a friendly and it's good to
see him in the line up.
Shaftesbury are pegged back to 1-1 at one point and Amesbury are holding up well.
Cameron Beard nets a hat trick joined by Asa Philips (2), Delaney (2), Bowles and substitute
Finch. In a blur it was suddenly 8-2 before a ninth is added. A bit harsh on Amesbury who
played better than the scoreline indicates. The home side were very clinical on the night.
Amesbury are probably not the only team that will be beaten heavily here though it will be
interesting to see how Hamworthy United,
Horndean, AFC Stoneham, Baffins Milton Rovers,
Fareham Town and the rest get on here.
Amesbury had lost 4-1 at home to Shaftesbury in
the FA Cup on Saturday, so will be hoping for
better fortunes.
There is an opportunity to catch Millbrook here
in the Wessex League Cup on a Tuesday. Be
interesting to see how they deal with
Shaftesbury and Ollie Cherret's team.

A Flying Visit to Shepton Mallet
Summer, August 2015, it was time for a holiday. Southampton to Newton Abbot. Fixture found on-route
at Shepton Mallet (my wife never was so great at geography) and we were on our way!
We split the kids in two (not literally) so me and my lad arrived at West Shepton in good time.
Programme secured. 36 pages, A5 and enough content to keep me reading pre match.
My home town team Barnstaple Town were the visitors and we settled in to watch the game.
As ever memories of the game are dim (non existent), but this I do remember. Half way through the
second half I heard the unmistakable noise of an aircraft very close to my heart. Ever since reading the
book ‘Vulcan 607’ I had developed a fascination with this very special aircraft.
As the noise grew louder, finally she came into view. An incredible sight and noise! This was supposed to
be the last summer a Vulcan would be flown and here was our very own flypast!
It’s not the first time I’ve spotted interesting aircraft whilst watching non league. Any games north of
Salisbury can often bag you a Chinook or games east of Oxford where huge transport planes arrive at
Brize Norton.
As we headed back to the town centre to pick up the girls, my son and I knew we may well forget the
match, but we wouldn’t forget this day. Chris Tuck,
