Principal's Message

Tena Koutou

Welcome back everyone. Term 4 has started off to be a really busy term. As I write this, the sun is

shining, and the trees are starting to show new growth. There are birds nesting in trees, one

specifically right outside the staffroom window.

The students have returned to school, and it seems they have grown many centimetres since last term.

Over the holiday break, it has been a busy time for me. Interviews for a couple of positions took place

resulting in some new faces on our staff. I have within this newsletter mentioned these amazing

people who are with us this term.

During the holiday break James, our maintenance man painted our gate, this was a work in progress

in between weather systems. Scrapping off the lichen and replacing a few boards needed to happen

before the paint was applied…… what a huge difference. We have already been told from people who

pass our gate they did not realise there was a school down the drive way……..

For students taking part in the Nessy programme, I have extended the trial for a few weeks so

teachers can get the feedback they need. I will keep everyone updated.

Training for athletics is now happening at school. Please keep an eye on the dates when things are

happening here at school. I have uploaded to the school website next years term dates and the

community calendar. If you have a smart phone, you can down load the skool loop app, you can access

our newsletter and calendar from the app as well.

1 - Congratulations to Bella Kubaisi- Gallagher. Bella was awarded a prestigious trophy at Katikati College Netball Awards, while

she was in Tahiti.. Bella was awarded the trophy for ‘Outstanding year 7 netball player’ Well done Bella, a great achievement.

Have a great term everyone. It is going to be very busy………

Our new Faces:-

2 - Hello, I am Anna Tehiva and I am from Tahiti in French Polynesia. In 2013, I participated in a student exchange organised by Chrissy. On this visit, I discovered New Zealand and Matahui school. Encouraged by the trip, I decided to be an English (as

a foreign Language) teacher and I started an English Civilisation and Literature degree in France. I have now completed my degree and decided to take a gap year in New Zealand to improve my English and gain experience before continuing with my

studies.

It is a great opportunity for me to work at Matahui School as I can interact with the pupils but also learn from the teachers . I

hope to assist Chrissy with the teaching of French and to assist teachers here at Matahui school as a student teacher.

Why Matahui? I remembered the school as a place where kids can blossom and its school community is really welcoming, it has not changed.

3 - Kia ora Katou. My name is Danielle Fox. I have lived in Waihi for 13 years and absolutely love the being so close to the beach. My passion is all things sports and in 2018 I completed a bachelor’s degree in Sport and Recreation. Through the

winter I enjoy playing netball, or heading down to the mountain to snow board. In summer I play touch rugby and volleyball. Through these sporting initiatives, it is a great way to meet more of your community.

I am looking forward to the rest of the term 4 and assisting the teachers and students here at Matahui.

Citizenship Award

Health & Safety - Spotlight of the Month

Sun Smart

Term 4 will be heating up and as we are a Sun Smart school, all children need to wear hats whenever

they are playing outside.

It is also a good idea to put sunscreen on your child/children before they come to school and maybe

provide them with their own tube of sun screen to apply to themselves during the day.

Upcoming & Recent Events/Activities

Au revoir Tahiti

We are now back from our spectacular 10 day trip to Tahiti. Our group of 4 students were fabulous;

demonstrating great courage to try new things, speaking French, challenging themselves in the

marine environment, trying new foods and taking on the local customs. A special thanks to our

amazing Chrissy, her knowledge of the local area and her amazing friends took this trip to the next

level. We were welcomed with open arms and shown true generosity; trips out on boats, wonderful

meals, sharing the local natural environment.

Useful Information

Art Gallery Trip- Bus Information - Thursday 24 October

Would all Katikati bus children be prompt to the bus on Thursday morning as we will leave as soon as

the Katikati bus arrives and we have loaded these students onto the art bus?

Would all other children please be at school by 8.30 am - so we can leave by 8.40 am.

Dear Matahui parents and wider community,

Kowhai classroom is in need of supplies to help keep our learning through play programme exciting

and equipped.

This term as part of our inquiry and learning through play programme we are on the look out for:

• Old small appliances to use for loose parts - stereos, computers, radios, VCR's etc

• Any loose parts - natural or unused arts craft - pegs, parts from old board games, magazines,

newspaper, stickers, anything lying around your house that is no longer needed. Loose parts

are things that the kids can create with - we can use anything that can be glued onto

something else.

• Dress ups that fit up to 7/8 year olds - pretend play e.g. old high heels, drs kits etc

• Plastic and pretend play animals, trees as well as sea animal figurines

• Cooking trays

• Puppets to add to our puppet theatre

• Pinecones

IMPORTANT ITEM: SIGNING YOUR CHILD IN AND OUT

If you need to take your child out of school during the day, would you please come to the school office

to sign out … and back in again if required. This would help greatly in making sure we have the right

number of children on the school bus.

BUS:- Please also advise Colin on 027 611 6653 (for the Tauranga bus) or Peter on 022 177 1823 (for

the Waihi bus) and the office if your child is NOT taking the bus home at any stage during the

week. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter

Scholastic Book Club – Issue 7

This issue is now open. Please either return your book order to the school by Wednesday 13

November or place your order through the LOOP system. The LOOP system is very easy and

convenient to use and will give you a longer time period to order your books. Many thanks.

Nature Kids at The Nest – Waihi Beach

These school holidays we are again offering something very special for your children - an opportunity

to connect with and explore nature in a nurturing environment, all day.

Nature Kids and The Nest provide exciting and engaging free play in nature where your children can

Katikati Cricket Club offers cricket for the following age groups.

New to Cricket - Mini's Fridays. Coaching for Years 2 - 6 after school 3.15 to 4.30pm from 1 Nov 2019

till end of term 4. This is learning to play cricket, fun and introductory games.

Year 3/4 Saturday soft ball cricket, 9am - 11am Teams of 8 players (Practices usually Fridays) Year 5/6

Saturday hard ball cricket, 9am - 11.30am Teams of 8 players (Practice usually on Wednesdays but

may change)

All practices are held at the back of Katikati College by the cricket nets.

The Katikati Boating Club

The Katikati Boating Club runs a Learn to Sail and Learn to Race programme each summer ( term 4 + term

1)

We have a few spaces left in the Learn To sail programme it is open to kids 8+.

We are bound to the tides and so generally run fortnightly (through term time).

First session is week 1 of term 4 on Sat October 19th.

CRICKET

1. GoGirls Term 4 2019 programme (FREE)

A basic cricket and fundamental motor skills programme for girls in Year 4-6.

This Term 4 there will be four coaching sessions before a 6 a side festival day (Super 6s) at Blake Park

on Thursday 21st November 2019 where the girls will be able to show off the skills they have learnt. This

festival day will be held alongside the BlackCaps vs England Test Match at Bay Oval. Some tickets are

available to enter the test after the festival day. Coaching sessions will begin in Week 2 Term 4, be quick

as time slots will go quickly.

2. NPL GO- Friday Afterschool Girls Cricket

Cricket coaching and game sessions for girls in Year 4-6. Afterschool on Fridays at Bay Oval, 4-6pm $30 a

player. You can enter a team of 6 or players can come as individuals.
