MJ Munsell is an expert at translating brands into impactful customer
moments. She has spent her career studying consumers and the drivers
that impact their decisions, whether it be in their purchases,
the workplace, or their choices for travel. As MG2’s Retail and Interiors
Market lead, MJ leads teams and clients through an innovative process
that blends brand stories, business goals and consumer insights into
memorable experiences. She has collaborated with some of the world’s

team skills of project architects and managers, interior designers, fixture and casework
design specialists, lighting specialists and a variety of preferred consultants. We work with
our internal resources such as our cost management group, quality assurance group and

MG2 worked with Nordstrom Rack to adapt the brand’s identity to site specific locations.
The project team provided individualized designs for each location to make the best
use of space and maximize flow, as well as offer customers many touchpoints and visual
stimulus to encourage browsing. The new store design highlights four primary customer
touchpoints: store entry, the sales floor, fitting rooms and the checkout experience.

MG2 has partnered with Target on more than 600 projects throughout the U.S. since we
first began working together in 2002. Target has approached MG2 about adapting its
prototypical store to attract customers in urban locations. MG2’s solutions integrate simple
and flexible ceiling designs with use of unique materials, heights and lighting. The designs
can be modified to function in a variety of existing building conditions, provide added
energy in strategic locations and assist in wayfinding.

UNIQLO is the fourth-largest apparel retailer in the world with a growing network of more
than 1,400 stores offering high-quality, casual apparel.
When entering new markets, UNIQLO has strategically raised brand awareness by utilizing
temporary, “pop-up” store locations. MG2 partnered with UNIQLO’s U.S. and Japan teams
on a series of pop-ups, as well as the debut of multiple in-line mall stores and a premier
flagship store location.
In each instance, MG2 interpreted UNIQLO branding guidelines and tailored them to
celebrate the distinctive features of the market. Maintaining UNIQLO’s signature design
characteristics, such as an emphasis on symmetry and creating an immediate visual impact
upon store entry, ensures customers already familiar with the retailer have a coherent brand
experience, while simultaneously enthralling a new set of customers unaccustomed to
UNIQLO’s distinct style.

REIMULTIPLE LOCATIONS, U.S.
Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) is renowned for its commitment to inspiring, educating
and outfitting its members for a lifetime of outdoor adventure. To integrate this mission
into the architectural design of its stores, MG2 partnered with REI to implement new and
remodeled store concepts that reflect its brand promise.
The store’s exterior design features a rustic timber and metal entrance canopy. Once inside,
a monumental wood and steel staircase invites members to look up toward skylights that
soar 22 feet in the air. The interior design speaks to a comfortable relationship between
its customers and nature, which reinforces REI’s ongoing commitment to environmental
stewardship and social responsibility.

Victoria’s Secret is the leading specialty retailer of women’s premier lingerie, womenswear
and beauty products. Repeatedly ranked as the most recognized apparel brand in the
nation, Victoria’s Secret stores are constantly embracing innovative design strategies to
create the unexpected.
In search of an architectural partner that provides both design and delivery services,
Victoria’s Secret has partnered with MG2 on a multitude of retail locations throughout
the U.S. and Canada. MG2’s team works closely with Victoria’s Secret store designers to
implement brand standards and develop fixturing and merchandising strategies.

Tommy Bahama is a lifestyle brand founded on the idea that life is “one long weekend.”
Known for its relaxed, sophisticated casual wear and island-inspired cuisine and cocktails,
Tommy Bahama tapped MG2 to develop a common design language to connect the
customer experience across the brand’s numerous stores, restaurants and bar offerings.
MG2 designed three new unique store concepts, each one inspired by the authentic spaces
a couple might inhabit throughout decades of sun-soaked and salt-water washed getaways.
From Iconic Resort, comprised of lush greenery and geometric screens, to Family Retreat,
featuring worn-in surfaces reminiscent of a 1960s beach home, to Island Bohemia, an
environment rich with unconventional textures and abstract prints, each concept offers the
customer layers of tactile experiences to explore.

AnthropologieMULTIPLE LOCATIONS, U.S. AND CANADA
For Anthropologie, the design of each store must provide the right backdrop for the ever-
changing merchandising vignettes while communicating a consistent brand language.
In the Granville Street area of Vancouver, British Columbia, MG2 partnered with Urban
Outfitters on a new Anthropologie store in an existing retail building. The design integrates
original elements and utilizes reclaimed materials to create an aesthetic that feels timeless
and fresh.
MG2 also partnered with Anthropologie to explore a new “lifestyle” concept that triples the
average store size and expands the merchandise mix to deliver an even more immersive
experience to the devoted Anthropologie customer.

Soma by Chico’s FASMULTIPLE LOCATIONS, U.S.
MG2 developed a new attitude for the Soma brand by working with all stakeholders including
the brand President, Store Planning Team, Marketing and Operations. These new creations
were pulled together through a new, flexible and scalable kit of parts as well as a series of
captured moments which evolved into a new prototype for the brick and mortar experience.
The first prototype for Soma opened in October 2017 and feaures warm woods, rose and soft
golds and lacy panels. The soft glow and inviting atmosphere encourages customers to feel
comfortable engaging with the stylists, their friends and the brand as a whole.

EverevePROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT
Evereve’s goal was to create a richer, deeper and more memorable experience for
existing customers and first-time guests alike. MG2 approached Evereve’s design and
implimentation with a scrappy, creative and budget-maximizing mindet, by imbuing a
soulful atmosphere and adding thoughtful amenities, engaging messaging and a vible that
is both chich and fun.
By working with Evereve’s founders Megan and Mike Tamte, as well as their Store Design

The Vans brand celebrates individuality and the culture of outdoor sports like skating,
surfing, snowboarding and BMX biking. In expanding in Mexico and other markets, VF
Corporation needed to translate the VANS store concept into new store designs that
reinforce the iconic brand with cultural sensitivity.
MG2 has collaborated with Vans to implement consistent architectural design and planning
programs for more than 30 stores across North America. In each location, the design
concept is effectively tailored and efficiently implemented through MG2’s knowledge of
cultural trends and the nuances of local developmental processes.

The new retail experience for Allen Edmonds was imbued with the notion of an historic
shell and a modern insertion, with a pioneering design language that feels high-end but
not couture. MG2 helped to craft an environment that revolutionized the old shoe shop
paradigm while gracefully educating customers on how to wear Allen Edmonds in a way
that was absorbed naturally.
MG2 collaborated with Allen Edmonds to create a consistent design and feel that evoked
the feel of a factory experience inside of a retail atmosphere. The store design and
implimentation showcase Allen Edmond’s idealism, thoughtfulness and integrity paired
with a light and airy design that reminds customers they are in the presence of the work of
artisans.

Confidential Corporate Food HallREDMOND, WA, U.S.
Posed with an aging corporate cafeteria space, the client approached MG2 with the goal of
creating an eight-venue multi-restaurant space on par with the best modern food halls in
the world. Modeled to embody the approachable industrial feel of the existing structure and
embrace the forest-scape along the perimeter of the new space, MG2 created an outside-in
experience for our client’s on-campus corporate guests.
The food hall’s design takes advantage of an extended footprint and elevated roofline to
further enhance the outside-in experience. MG2’s Retail studio created several bespoke
brands – each with their own distinct design language, logos and environmental graphic
design – to reflect the wide range of menu items available to diners.

The goal of Tommy Bahama’s new design was to evolve the built environment of its stores
and restaurants to engage all of its customers’ senses and to deliver an experience that
could only be Tommy Bahama. The challenge MG2 worked on with Tommy Bahama was to
bring back the unique sense of place and the emotion important to its brand and heritage.
In order to create a unique customer experience, Tommy Bahama incorporated bars and
restaurants into location specific concepts. These new concepts allow customers to shop,
eat and drink in one place while enjoying the complete Tommy Bahama brand.

Since 1922, Fred Meyer has evolved into a one-stop destination where consumers can
find everything from groceries to gasoline. As Fred Meyer’s aspirations escalated, so
did their need for an experienced partner to manage complex projects with a variety of
stakeholders. MG2 has been that partner since 1998.
Together, MG2 and Fred Meyer have designed six new stores and refreshed or expanded
more than 80 existing locations. Through the design process, MG2’s expertise in sustainable
design has helped to introduce a lasting impact for the Fred Meyer brand. The MG2-
designed Hawthorne Fred Meyer store in Portland, OR became the first of Kroger’s 2,500
stores nationwide to be awarded LEED Silver certification, setting the standard for such
large-format retail stores.

Beginning in 1996, MG2 has worked with Safeway on approximately 150 stores throughout
Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Montana and Canada. We have worked
with numerous Safeway divisions around the country to provide everything from interior
remodel and architectural design to store planning, cost management and construction
administration. MG2 designers have also worked on Safeway’s prototype criteria to further
elevate the Safeway brand across the country.
With the acquisition of Fuller Sears in 2017, MG2 has further expanded our knowledge and
experience working with Safeway through an additional four locations in Washington state.
