Black Henna Tattoo DangerTroy Family Shares Story to Warn of Health RiskUpdated: Saturday, 05 Mar 2011, 7:08 PM EST ` Published : Friday, 04 Mar 2011, 10:32 PM ESTBy KIM RUSSELL WJBK | myFOXDetroit.com
TROY, Mich. (WJBK) – http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/dpp/news/local/black-henna-tattoo-danger-20110304-wpms
A Troy mother let her sons get temporary tattoos in Mexico. Now, she fears they could be left with permanent scars. The mom is warning about a dangerous dye in so-called black henna.During a family vacation in Cancun, eleven-year-old Ryan and his eight-year-old brother, Kevin, got black henna tattoos."It just turned out to be something that was really bad," said Ryan Giniel.
Days later after they returned to their Troy home their skin reacted."It just started to puff up and now it's red and itchy," said Kevin Giniel.
Their mom, Coleen Giniel, learned too late this is common with so called black henna. Doctors warn it often contains a dye that causes chemical burns."It doesn't look good. It looks painful. It looks red, and the fact that he may have this for the rest of his life, obviously, it was not a decision he probably wanted to make at eleven years old to have a permanent mark on his arm," she said. (continued on next slide)
After doing some researching online, this mom found out black henna often contains a chemical banned by the FDA for use dying skin. It quickly turns the skin black. However, real henna does not turn the skin black and dyes it slowly over time."There is no such thing as a black henna," said Kalpana Ujla with Imaginez Salon. She and her daughter, Krupa, are henna artists in Troy. They only use natural henna, which they say is safe and has been used for centuries. They suggest anyone considering a henna tattoo ask the artist what is used to dye the skin."If they tell you if it's the actual henna powder and it looks like green or like dark green, then you know it's the real stuff. If it looks like a black color or like a dye, it's not the real stuff. I wouldn't get it," said Krupa Ujla.Meantime, Coleen Giniel fears there are many other kids out there coming home from Mexican vacations with the same medical problem."While we were there, there were children younger than mine getting these," she said. Now she's wondering if her children will have a permanent souvenir of their vacation on their arms. Doctors say it could take months before they heal."So, I just hope it doesn't stay there," Ryan Giniel said.Pure Henna is SAFE. Pure henna has been in use for thousands of years. (continued on next slide)
It's one of the safest things you can put on your skin, and reactions are very unusual. (P.S. Miss Shanks is neither trying to encourage nor discourage anyone about getting a henna tattoo.)
Henna ONLY stains a color in the range of orange, red, brown, cinnamon, brick, chocolate or coffee. If you've never used henna before, you may want to do a skin test to be sure you're not allergic. The allergy is called a "napthoquinone sensitivity". If you put henna on your skin, and in 1 hour have itching, a tight chest, or wheezing, you have a napthoquinone sensitivity and you should not ever use henna.
-Not "Colored Henna“-Henna is NEVER blue, yellow, green, purple or black. If a product stains skin those colors, it is NOT henna. Those stains come from other dyes. Ask what dyes those are. If the supplier can't or won't tell you what dyes those are, and prove it, or you don't like the sound of what they tell you, don't put the stuff on your skin. Smell the product. If it smells scary, don't put it on your skin.

The details of the event are as follows: Movie: Tron – LegacyLocation: Doherty High School AuditoriumTime: 5:30-8:30, The students’ presentation on hunger will begin about 5:40 and the movie will start around 5:50Cost: $2 for Jenkins students with ID, Free for staff – Additional donations of food will also be acceptedBeneficiary: The Food Pantry – a food bank run by one of our staff members In addition to that beneficiary, Jenkins and Doherty share students who were affected by a fire that destroyed a home. At this point in time, the students are thinking that they will split any profit from the movie night to support that family as well. As much as 80% of the profit may end up going to our affected kids.
