Tuition and Financial Aid • Tuition for the 2016-17 academic year is $34,500. • Tuition is paid in three equal installments over the first three
quarters (fall, winter, spring); enrollment in summer is for thesis students and there is no additional tuition due.
• Financial aid offers will be made based on these tuition levels + cost of living and were only made for the first three quarters.
• Students that perform thesis work over the summer quarter receive (*) a small stipend that meets their cost of living.
Where does my tuition go? • The MSBI program was approved by the University of California
as a self-supporting program. • Of the tuition you pay, ~25% goes to university services and
~75% goes to the MSBI program • ~70% of MSBI funds cover faculty and program administration • ~13% goes to pay rent on facilities • ~10% goes to medical equipment usage costs • ~7% goes to IT costs (laptops, SW licenses, server etc)
Offices and Laboratories • Shared office space is available for MSBI students at China Basin;
Access cards to the China Basin facility only work Mon-Fri between the hours of 6AM – 6PM.
• Laboratories will be at variable locations and times and may extend into the evening. There will typically be one lab/week and special access will be arranged as needed.
IT Overview - Computers • All students will be provided with a computer (MacBook Air) for
use for all MSBI activities. It will come loaded with relevant software and licenses and MUST be returned at the end of the program. You will be asked to sign a form indicating that you agree to this when you receive the laptop.
• The system was selected by our IT department due to its functionality for the program as well as encryption and networking considerations.
• Please do not personalize, add stickers etc!
IT Overview - Networking • It is mandatory that you ONLY use the provided laptop when
connecting to the UCSF networks or when handling MSBI related data. Personal laptops should not be used for any MSBI activities.
• IT will provide guidance on system use, network policy etc (MANDATORY IT orientation session: September 13th from 10:00-1:00). Please make sure to abide by their rules at all time.
• Wireless internet is available throughout the third floor of CBL and a very limited number of wired connections are in the MSBI student offices.
IT Overview - Email • Every student should already have a UCSF email ID. Mailing lists
have been developed for distribution purposes. Students can communicate with all other MSBI students via the MSBI listserv mailing list.
• After September 13th ALL MSBI related communications will be
directed solely to your UCSF email addresses.
IT Overview - Calendar • A calendar has been established (Rad – MBI Schedule) upon which
faculty can post class/lab schedules/details, office hours etc.

Open to all students. Participating RCOs.
Laboratories – HIPAA & Safety Training • Practical experience with radiological equipment will require that
you undergo basic safety and HIPAA training. • You will be required to take standard training modules via UCSF’s
“Learning Management System”. • HIPAA training requires you to review the UCSF Privacy &
Confidentiality Handbook and take the online course entitled HIPAA 101 - Privacy and Security for New UCSF Faculty, Staff, Trainees, Students and Volunteers.
• Once completed, sign the UCSF Confidentiality Statement and return to Rukayah.
Laboratories – HIPAA & Safety Training • You will need to take the “MRI Safety” course, print out a training
transcript certificate, then sign it and return to Rukayah.
• Details on basic laboratory safety and radiation safety modules will be provided as part of BI202/209. Please be aware that you must complete these trainings in a timely fashion or you will not be allowed access to related labs.

Community Development • There is so much to go and see in San Francisco and the bay area.
Get to know your classmates and take advantage of your time in this beautiful city.
• A couple of students from the 2012/13 class (Yishin Chang & Charvi Shetty) made a video of their adventures in the city:
