    System Restore

One area Ive always felt was lacking in past Windows versions was the ability to undo

changes that were made to the operating system. If you make a lot of changes, as I do,

eventually your system will head south with little hope of recovery other than a fullreformat and reinstall. Im told that Windows Me had the capability to roll itself back to

previous configurations. Since my total working time with Windows Me was about ten

minutes (long enough to initiate a reformat) Ill proceed under the guise that systemrestore is a fine innovation for XP.

This is the opening screen for System Restore, accessible by clicking [Start] [AllPrograms] [Accessories] [System Tools] [System Restore]. Choose from the bulleted

options on the right whether you want to restore yourcomputerto an earlier time or

create a new restore point for future use.

restore point you want and click [Next].

Last chance (not really) before you start the restore process. I say not really because one

of the excellent features of System Restore is the ability to undo any restore performed. The [Help and Support] option available from the [Start] menu is an excellent source of

more information on the different types of restore points available. Search under SystemRestore.

When you choose to establish a new restore point rather than go back to a previous

The opening screen for System Restore contains a link called [System Restore Settings].

Clicking it will open the System Properties page which is accessible from many differentlocations and via many methods. The property page allows you to disable System Restore

on any or all drives with the one caveat that it must be enabled on C:\ if any of the other

drives are enabled. Click [Settings] to open the page shown below.

The Settings Property Sheet allows you to select the percentage of the drive spaceallocated to restore points. The default setting is 12% of total drive size, but this can be

increased or decreased depending on the number of restore points you want to have

    available.

    Troubleshooting and Internet Explorers

    (No Add-ons) Mode.

In this post, we wanted to go into more detail about how to troubleshoot with InternetExplorer 7. So, how does one go about identifying the cause for toolbar or add-on

    program problems?

To identify if an incompatible browser add-on or extension is at the root of your troubles,

we recommend taking advantage ofInternet Explorers (No Add-ons) mode. Thefollowing are steps to do this:

    1. Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools, and then click

    Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

If your browser appears to be working properly in Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)mode, continue with the following steps to help identify which add-on may be

causing the problems. If youve usedInternet Explorers (No Add-ons) mode and

are still experiencing issues, try our KB Article,How to perform commontroubleshooting steps for Internet Explorer 7 Beta. Information found here can

help you further troubleshoot problems that may be connectivity and network-

related or caused by a third party application or by a specific websites code.

    2. To isolate the specific browser add-on that is contributing to the issue, you can

use IEs Manage Add-onsfeature to pick specific add-ons to disable:a. Click Tools -> Internet Options.

    b. Click the Programs tab, then Manage add-ons (see figure below):

Note: The Manage Add-ons option under Tools is disabled in No Add-

ons mode so you must go to Internet Options, Programs, Manage add-ons

    to manually enable/disable add-ons.

    c. Select an add-on in the Namelist, and then click Disable(see figures

    below):

    d. Click OK, OK again, OK again and then close IE.

    3. Restart IE normally and see if your problem is resolved.

    a. If it is, you should uninstall the specific add-on via Control PanelsAdd/Remove Programs or the applications own uninstaller.

    b. If the problem persists, you will need to repeat steps 1-3 until you have

identified the specific add-on causing the problem.

Tip: Disable several add-ons at once to speed up your process of

    elimination.

In general, updating to the latest version of a toolbar or extension can resolve most issues.

Below weve included a few commonly known problems and where to get the latestupdates:

Google Desktop: Google has fixed an issue that was known to cause IE7 to crash

when opening new tabs. The latest version is now available here.

MSN 1.02 Toolbar: The MSN 1.02 toolbar crashes Internet Explorer 7. Theworkaround is to disable the toolbar, using manage add-ons or, uninstall it. You

can download the latest version here.
