What is Masterplan?

Masterplan is the annual business plan competition hosted by IIM Ahmedabad. Masterplan

seeks to identify budding entrepreneurs to contribute to India's buzzing economy. The final pitching

round takes place during The Red Brick Summit, IIM-A's annual international business summit which

saw a footfall of 20,000 over 3 days in 2017 and participation from 5000 start-ups, 32 international

and 200 Indian B-schools.

Entre Club, IIM Ahmedabad, which is aimed at promoting the spirit of entrepreneurship in

IIMA in collaboration with The Centre for Innovation Incubation, and Entrepreneurship (CIIE)

(http://www.ciie.co/) that helps entrepreneurs turn ideas into viable businesses host the competition.

In partnership with its network of mentors, corporates, development agencies, IIMA community and

investors, CIIE cultivates a rare breed of entrepreneurs by incubating, accelerating, mentoring and

funding innovative start-ups. CIIE believes that entrepreneurship has an unmatched ability to bring

about disruptive change in India and engages with ventures across technology and impact areas like

How do I participate?

To participate in Masterplan 2018, visit our website http://entrecell.iima.ac.in/masterplan/ and register. After activation of the Masterplan 2018 Round 1/2 submission link, you would be required to fill up your email ID and phone number to submit your entry.

Eligibility Criteria Team Composition

1. The event is open for teams comprising of students, corporate professionals, entrepreneurs as well as other independent individuals (employed or self-employed)

2. A team can have a minimum of one and a maximum of five members. Members can be from

any organization. All the members may or may not be from the same organization.

3. One participant cannot be part of more than one team.

4. No change in the team structure is permitted after the team is registered. Please register your team after careful thought and deliberation

Masterplan Start-up Central

1. Start-ups that have been incorporated more than three years ago (i.e. registered on or before 1st April, 2015) or have raised seed or Series A funding are not eligible to participate in the Start-up Central of Masterplan 2018. You may be required to submit proof of the same during the competition process.

2. The event is open for teams comprising of students, corporate professionals, entrepreneurs

as well as other independent individuals (employed or self-employed)

3. Ventures that have acquired funding from external investor-networks (angels, VC’s, etc.)

cannot participate. The aim of our event is to provide a platform for promoting start-ups that

require assistance in the form of seed capital, mentoring and various types of consultancies. Masterplan Idea Central

1. Start-ups that are still in the idea stage or have just developed a prototype/ conducted a pilot are eligible to participate in the Idea Central of Masterplan 2018. You may be required to submit proof of the same during the competition process.

2. The event is open for teams comprising of students, corporate professionals, entrepreneurs

as well as other independent individuals (employed or self-employed).

Competition Rules and Guidelines Participation and Registration

The event is open for teams comprising of students, corporate professionals, entrepreneurs as well as other independent individuals (employed or self-employed)

Participants are required to register and submit their executive summary/ business model

online.

Participants may register using any of their E-Mail IDs. Pease note that in case of using an E-mail ID, participants must confirm their E-mail ID using the verification link sent to them.

A team can have a minimum of one and a maximum of five members. Members can be from

Round 2 Starts

Selected start-ups will be informed by 10th August 2018.

Registration Closes

Registrations close on 31st July 2018. Last day for submission of executive summary.

Round 3

Participants selected for round 3 will be informed by 27th August and the top 10 startups selected by Matrix will be informed by 15th September 2018.

Last day for submission of Business Model Canvas and Pitch Deck is 20th August 2018

Final Pitching Round

10 teams to pitch in front of Matrix Partners.

No change in the team structure is permitted after the team is registered. Please register your

team after careful thought and deliberation A team can submit only one business model/idea after registration.

While making submissions, the username to be used is the team leader’s username that has

been used for registration. The password is the team leader’s mobile number.

Every contestant must agree with the rules of the contest and must accept the declaration of confidentiality during registration in order to participate. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions of the competition before registering.

Choosing your Track: Start-up or Idea

There is a common registration portal for both Start-up and Idea Central.

Teams must select their track after they register for Masterplan

Teams must select their track after viewing the Eligibility Criteria for both the tracks.

Once a team selects its track, it cannot be changed. Round 1: Submission of Executive Summary

Registered teams will compete against each other in a display of creativity and clarity of thought. In this round, participants are tasked with explaining the idea in an Executive Summary answering the questions to

o What is the existing gap or problem that you are solving? o What is your solution/idea/product? o What is your revenue model?

The submission should be a one pager, Font –Times New Roman, Size – 11, Line spacing – 1

with Normal Margins (2.54 cm by 2.54 cm).

Only .pdf file formats will be accepted for the executive summary submission.

Please name your file in the following format:

Please submit the Round 1 Submissions by logging into the Masterplan Portal using your

email ID and phone number by 31 July 2018.

Entries reaching us after the deadline will not be entertained for evaluation under any circumstances.

Round 2: Submission of the Business Model

Only teams that quality for the second round are eligible for submitting their business models.

Only .pdf file formats will be accepted.

The submission should not be more than four pages, Font –Times New Roman, Size – 11, Line spacing – 1 with Normal Margins (2.54 cm by 2.54 cm).

Guidelines for the format of the Business Model (Submission date: 20 August 2018)

Cover Sheet (Company Name, College/Organization/Company. Presenting Team Members, Team Leader contact info)

Value Proposition Product or service description (including current status of development- beta,

prototype, etc.) Customer/Market analysis (market size and potential market share) Sales and Marketing Strategy (how you will go-to-market), Intellectual Property

status (e.g., patents, licenses, etc.) Competitor Analysis (competitors and your competitive differentiation) Management team and/or advisors, including relevant experience Financial highlights (cash flow, income statement, balance sheet) Offering of the company (how much investment you are seeking, uses of funding,

possible exits)

For the comprehensive B-plan submission, teams may choose to diverge (add or subtract sections) from the prescribed format if deemed necessary. However, it is highly recommended to adhere to this format.

The final Business Model must be submitted online in the Masterplan Portal.

CIIE and Entre Club, IIM Ahmedabad will judge the round two submissions. Round 3: Due diligence by Matrix Partners

The final Business Models of selected teams from Round 2 will be forwarded to Matrix Partners.

Due diligence will be done by Matrix Partners, so selected teams can expect calls from

Matrix Partners regarding their Masterplan submission.

Teams will be assigned mentors from CIIE and Matrix Partners and mentoring will take place via email, video conferencing and telephone calls.

Round 4: Pitching Round

Selected participants from the previous round will be invited to IIM-Ahmedabad campus during The Red Brick Summit 2018 (International Business Summit of IIM-A) to be held

between 29th September and 4th October, 2018. All the teams making it to the campus finals will get opportunities to pitch to VCs from

Matrix Partners; which may lead to further mentoring opportunities for all finalist ventures, and eventually leading to probable fund-raising or equity infusion.

Corporate High-Tea and Networking session after the event

Teams have to make their own travel arrangements. Masterplan Team will arrange for accommodation for two days – the day before and the day of the pitching round.

Judging Criteria Round 1: Submission of Executive Summary

Multiple judges will judge each entry and the final scores will be normalized by proven and genuine statistical methods that will be declared soon.

Entries will be judged based on the following criteria and each criterion would be marked on

a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest and 1 being the lowest.

Round 2: Submission of the Business Model

Judging criteria will be uploaded on the website in a detailed manner and will be sent to the semi-finalists through e-mails.

Round 3: Due diligence by Matrix Partners

Judging criteria will decide upon by Matrix Partners and Entre Club, IIM Ahmedabad will not be playing any part in deciding the judging criteria for this round

The One Crore Challenge

The One Crore Challenge is a pitching event where Masterplan provides a platform to the teams selected for the Grand Finale to pitch their product/service or idea to a panel of venture capitalists from Matrix Partners India and the Centre for Innovation Incubation, and Entrepreneurship (CIIE).

The teams will have the opportunity to make their business presentations based on which

Matrix Partners India and CIIE may decide to invest in the business, based on further rounds of negotiations and due diligence.

Please note that the One Crore Challenge that has been mentioned in the mails/website is

an illustrative number representing the amount of funding that Matrix Partners India and/or CIIE may agree to invest in the businesses that will be presented in the final round. The One Crore Challenge is not related to the cash prizes that will be presented to the winners.

The final amount that may be invested into any business based on presentations made at

the grand finale of Masterplan 2018 may be more or less than INR 1 crore.

Masterplan will provide the platform for interaction between the potential investors and entrepreneurs looking to fund their startups. It does not bear any responsibility regarding the final fruition of commitments of funding made during Masterplan 2018 or during any subsequent interactions between the business and the venture capitalists on the panels.

Masterplan reserves the right to highlight any deals made between the Venture Capitalists

on the panel and the businesses for marketing and promotional purposes in the future.

Prize Distribution

The total cash prize distribution for the prize winners will be distributed within four months after the declaration of results

All prize money will be given as cheques. No cash under whatsoever condition will be given. Masterplan 2018 is not responsible for delivery of any funding commitments made during the final event.

What do investors look for in a Business Model?

Is the business opportunity as presented both highly attractive and clearly realistic? Is the business defensible from competitors?

What comparisons are there to past success stories that indicate this venture will succeed?

What is the amount of up-front capital investment required?

Do the market and financial projections demonstrate that the team understands its business?

How long will it take from the current stage of development to bring the product to its

market? Can this venture achieve a leadership position in its market?

Has the team of sufficient breadth, balance and quality to make its ideas happen?

Will the ego of the founder(s) get in the way of success? Is the team focused on its target market? What is the expected time and amount of pay-off to investors?

Is the reader familiar with and interested in the given market space?

Is the structure of Business Model clear and well drafted?

Does the team have the necessary communication skills to present a compelling story? Are the team members dedicated to the venture and their roles in the group?

Does the team have a clear structure for spending the investment money it receives? Why

will this business still be around and a real world winner in 5 years? Have you considered protecting your business’s Intellectual Property assets?

Who is eligible to participate in MasterPlan?

The contest is open to students, corporate professionals, entrepreneurs, as well as other independent individuals (employed or unemployed)

I want to participate in MasterPlan 2018. What are the steps I should follow? Step 1: Register at http://entrecell.iima.ac.in/masterplan/ for MasterPlan 2018.

Step 2: You will have to provide the Team Leader’s Details, team members’ details, postal address and other details as required. You will receive a confirmation mail. Click on the confirmation link provided Step 3: After confirming, you can proceed to the submissions page.

Do all the team members have to be from the same University / Business School / Organization?

No. All the team members need not be from the same University / Business School / Organization.

Can corporate participants from different companies form a Team? Yes. Corporate professionals from different companies can form a team together.

Can the team have a mix of Business school students/undergraduate students/corporate professionals/entrepreneurs/other individuals? Yes, the team can have any mix of participants.

Is the team composition mentioned at the time of registration final?

Yes. No changes will be allowed in the team composition after registration. Therefore, please enter the team details after proper deliberation.

What if a person gets registered as part of more than one team?

Both the teams will become ineligible to participate. Therefore, please check with the proposed team members before registering.

What is the registration fee for participation? There is no registration fee.

Where will the final round of the event be held?

The Grand Finale will be held on the campus of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad

between 29th September and 4th October 2018 during The Red Brick Summit 2018.

Can I enter both Masterplan Start-up Central and Masterplan Idea Central?

Yes, you can participate in both Masterplan Start-up Central and Masterplan Idea Central. However, ideas for both competitions must catered to the respective categories. You cannot enter both categories with the same Business Model.

Can we consult non-team members such as professors or industry experts?

The interaction with non-team members should be restricted to interviews and surveys, and proper reference should be made to the same in the business plan document. Similarly, any

other information source including published studies may be used, but the document submitted should contain proper references.

Can I submit additional documents along with the executive summary?

No, we do not accept any other documents. The judging will be done only based on the executive summary.

Should the business plans strictly adhere to a structure?

While adherence to any structure is not compulsory, all the relevant aspects such as business

concept, vision, market opportunity, competitive advantage, detailed competitive analysis and

the resources and finances required to implement the idea can be included. Relevant financial

projections including expected cash flows, pro-forma balance sheets and P&L statements can

be included. Proposed management structure and relevant assumptions may also be included

Terms and Conditions Confidentiality

Masterplan, IIM-Ahmedabad honours the confidentiality of all participants and their business plans and venture ideas. All judges and mentors associated with the competition also recognize the sensitivity of the plans being presented.

The Masterplan 2018 Organizing Team may publicize the names and associations of judges

and mentors associated in the evaluation rounds of the competition. However, the individual contact information for such judges will neither be disclosed, nor be sought by any of the teams.

Each participating team must agree to accept that their registration form and other entries

will not be returned to them, and accept that their personal data will be available for information and statistical purposes.

Intellectual Property

The participating team represents that Intellectual Property in the Business Model does not infringe upon the intellectual property or any other legal or moral right of any person or entity.

Legal Issues

The participating team represents that they shall not violate any applicable law. The Terms & Conditions and the Competition Rules shall be governed by the laws of India.

Any dispute or conflict arising out of, from or relating to anything contained in this Terms &

Conditions and/ or the Competition Rules is subject to the jurisdiction of Ahmedabad courts only.

Miscellaneous

Entre Club, IIM Ahmedabad reserves the right to disqualify or prohibit from participating in

Masterplan 2018 any team that makes a submission that, in the sole discretion of Entre Club,

IIM Ahmedabad, does not confirm with the Eligibility Criteria or does not comply with these

Terms & Conditions and/ or the Competition Rules and/ or violates the spirit of Masterplan

2018 as a competition. In addition, Entre Club, IIM Ahmedabad may notify the appropriate

legal/ administrative authorities as it deems fit and/or initiate any other action as may be

advised.

No participating team may under any circumstances attempt to contact a judge during

evaluation stages of the competition. Any such behaviour will result in the disqualification of the team from the competition.

By entering the Competition, each team and its individual members agree to accept as final

any decisions of Entre Club, IIM Ahmedabad including determination of the winners of Masterplan 2018.

Entre Club, IIM Ahmedabad shall have the discretion to initiate appropriate action against

participating teams including individuals of such participating teams in case of any losses or damages arising from violation of the Eligibility Criteria, Competition Rules and the Terms & Conditions.

If Entre Club, IIM Ahmedabad or its sponsors or associates are faced with any claim or loss

(including any third party claims) arising from or relating to any breach by any member of a

participating team of the Terms and Conditions hereof, such participating team shall severally and jointly indemnify and keep harmless Entre Club, IIM Ahmedabad or its sponsors or

associates.
