e were delighted with the response to our WinterMembership Campaign and are grateful for all thegenerous viewer donations throughout 2013.Because of your support, Vegas PBS welcomes thenew year with an abundance of new titles. From the

much-anticipated return of Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey, to thenew season of Antiques Roadshow, to local specials that showcase aca-demic all-stars like Varsity Quiz, these programs are the direct result ofyour investment in Vegas PBS.

Fans of Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey will also enjoy an all-access pass to the lives of British aristocrats with programs like Secretsof Highclere Castle, Secrets of the Tower of London and Diamond Queen. Our American history is also showcased with new documentaries fromAmerican Experience that look back at “The Last Innocent Year” in 1964,take a rare insider’s look at The Amish, and examine the scientific knowl-edge that led to modern forensics in The Poisoner’s Handbook. Your dona-tions also bring back Exploration Wednesdays, featuring Hawking, an inti-mate portrait of the remarkable life of Steven Hawking, real-life adven-ture series Chasing Shackleton, and a timely NOVA special, MonsterTyphoon, examining the “perfect storm” that was Typhoon Haiyan.

Vegas PBS will also present Surviving Sin City and Trafficked No More –disturbing and powerful local documentaries about human trafficking inLas Vegas. Donors are sometimes surprised that the same public servicetelevision station that brings them the delights of Downton Abbey andthe effective teaching of Sesame Street can also present the unpleasantfacts of sex trafficking.

We offer these programs in support of requests from groups like theSouthern Nevada Human Trafficking Task Force, Las Vegas Metro PoliceDepartment (LVMPD) and faith-based organizations, and because wetrust the sophistication of our members. We know you actively engage incommunity improvement and seek facts that allow you to make informeddecisions. The facts about this issue may be surprising. According to a2012 study, 61% of human trafficking victims were children from the stateof Nevada. In addition, LVMPD has recovered more than 2,200 minorsover the past decade believed to be victims of human trafficking.

Members of our Women’s Engagement Council funded these broad-casts and the production of a follow-up panel with Attorney GeneralCatherine Cortez-Masto, members of the Southern Nevada HumanTrafficking Task Force, survivors and victim services providers. We arealso working with the school district to create awareness videos and edu-cational content to help protect our children.

Thank you for your support this past year and for your continued sup-port in 2014. We are excited about the new programs your investment hasallowed us to acquire and produce. Thank you for helping fund theunique, inspiring, engaging and thought-provoking programing you canonly find on public television.

with the whole world waiting to learn howthe beloved characters deal with a shock-ing tragedy. In celebration of the highly-anticipated return, Vegas PBS has planneda month of special programming to satisfyeven the most avid Downton fan.

All who tuned in last season know thatMatthew Crawley – heir to DowntonAbbey, husband to Lady Mary, and brandnew father to a baby boy and successor –lies dead on a country road next to hisoverturned roadster. On top of this, the

family is still grieving over the death inchildbirth of Sybil, Mary’s youngest sister, who also left a baby behind. Season 4opens six months later. Although it is the1920s, Britain still observes mourning ritualsthat are almost Victorian in their solemnity.

Nonetheless, the Crawleys are begin-ning to snap out of it: Robert, LordGrantham, must manage the estate with-out his canny son-in-law; Cora suddenlyfaces a staffing crisis; Violet, who has seenenough tragedy, knows how to recoupquickly; Isobel, Matthew’s mother, maynever recover; Edith, who was jilted at thealtar, tempts scandal with a new beau; andMary now finds herselfthe most desirable widowin Yorkshire.

The servants also pickup, buck up and get onwith it – with new arrivals, departures, rivalries andbetrayals among the down-stairs staff. Life goes on atDownton Abbey.

s we enter a new year, for many it is a time for renewed commitments in

such areas as what we eat and paying more attention to exercise. At

Vegas PBS, these areas are not new year resolutions but are constantly

being stressed to our community through many of our on-air programs,

online resources and through dedicated educational projects such as

Keeping Kids Fit (KKF).

KKF is a locally designed project

that has been replicated across the

nation and stresses lifelong wellness

by promoting exercise and good nutri-

tional practices to children and fami-

lies. Educational resources and help-

ful information are provided through

Vegas PBS technologies, workshops

and working with our many communi-

ty partners. In November, nearly 500

students and adults joined in for our

annual, Keeping Kids Fit 5K Run and 1

Mile Walk. This health-oriented event

has become an event families look forward to that helps promote exercise as well. We were

also pleased that Daniel Tiger, from Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood could join us. Many local

children were thrilled to see Daniel and have their picture taken with him. One wise

observer noted that Daniel even had his running sneakers on for the event!

Using locally produced television programs, online resources and providing workshops

together with community partners, hundreds of thousands of children and parents have

gotten the message on how to live healthier lifestyles. The information and practices put

in place throughout the year continue working to produce a long-term and positive impact

on children’s health.

We thank our 5K sponsors: Wells Fargo, Dr. Joe and Joan Lapan, Health Care Partners,

MGM Resorts Foundation, Odyssey Charter Schools and Bodybuilding.com for their gener-

ous support. It is human nature to look back, reflect on the past and look ahead to the

future with a renewed commitment to better and healthier living. Vegas PBS is proud to

help keep that vision moving forward for our children and community.

Surviving Sin City emphasizes that pre-vention is key and education is the firststep in tackling any significant issue, likehuman trafficking, which brings greaterunderstanding, greater perspective andgreater responsibility to where such infor-mation can be used wisely to propelhumanity forward to a greater future. Drawing onconversations from his nightly PBS pro-gram and new insightful perspectives fromaround the world, the program capturesthe defining moments in politics, science, business, culture, media and sports. Since1991, Charlie Rose has been introducinghis audiences to fascinating peoplethrough in-depth conversation and engag-ing viewers with round table discussionsabout important issues of our time.

CongoThursdays, January 3 -16 at 8 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10

nce upon a time, the Congo was “darkest Africa,” an endless tangle of jungle

littered with venomous snakes, marauding spiders, deadly insects and cannibal-

istic natives. To the Victorians, this was hell on earth, the original “white man’s

grave.” This forbidding reputation has stayed with the Congo for a century, and

still persists. Perhaps this is why the entire region has been neglected for so long by filmmakers

and naturalists. There is no doubt that parts of the Congo are inhospitable and virtually inacces-

sible, where it can truthfully be said that no human has stepped before. And it is precisely

because we have interfered so little that there are new creatures waiting to be discovered, unfa-

miliar natural events to be witnessed and fresh insights into animal behavior to be observed.

ThisWeek’s PicksPoisoner’s Handbook: American ExperienceTuesday, January 7 at 8 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10

n the early 20th century, the average American medicine cabinet was a would-be poison-

er’s treasure chest: radioactive radium in health tonics, thallium in depilatory creams,

morphine in teething medicine and potassium cyanide in cleaning supplies. While the tools

of the murderer’s trade multiplied as the pace of industrial innovation increased, the

scientific knowledge (and political will) to detect and prevent the crimes lagged. This changed

in 1918, when New York City hired its first scientifically trained medical examiner, Charles

Norris. Over a decade and a half, Norris and his chief toxicologist, Alexander Gettler, turned

forensic chemistry into a formidable science, sending many a murderer to the electric chair and

setting the standards that the rest of the country would ultimately adopt. Based on the best-sell-

ing book by Deborah Blum.

ne week before the exciting premiere of the new third series of Sherlock on

Masterpiece Mystery!, go behind the scenes to uncover the genius under-

lying the modern incarnation of the most-portrayed literary character in the his-

tory of the big and small screen. This new special reveals how Steven Moffat and

Mark Gatiss created the television hit by unlocking the “Mind Palace” of Arthur Conan Doyle's

Sherlock Holmes. We show the voyage Moffat and Gatiss took through the myriad incarnations

of Holmes – the original stories, the factual inspirations, the countless film versions – to arrive

at the thoroughly modern Sherlock. The program breaks down clips from Sherlock through the

lens of featured characters, with interviews with the cast, including Benedict Cumberbatch and

Martin Freeman, and reflections from co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.

FRONTLINE: Secret State of North KoreaTuesday, January 14 at 10 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10Just two years on the job and armed with nuclear weapons, North Korea’s KimJong-Un is the world’s youngest dictator, ruling one of the world’s most isolatedcountries. Butwith unique access, this special goes inside the secret state to explore life underits new ruler and to investigate the enigmatic “Morning Star King” as he tries tohold onto power. Using new footage smuggled from inside and never-before-toldstories from recent defectors living in South Korea, the film offers a rare glimpseof how some North Koreans are defying authority in a country where just beingcaught with illegal DVDs could mean immediate imprisonment.

Independent Lens:Blood BrotherThursday, January 30 at 9 p.m.on Vegas PBS Jackpot! The unmistakable power of love is cele-brated in this story of one man’s decisionto move to India and restart his life amongthe dispossessed. Rocky Braat was dissat-isfied with his life in America and traveledto India as a disillusioned tourist. When hemet a group of children living in anorphanage for those infected with HIV, hedecided to stay and devote his life to them.Unlike others who simply passed throughtheir lives, Rocky stayed, dedicating him-self to their health and well-being. Despiteformidable challenges, his playful spiritand determination in the face of despairprove to be an invaluable resource. Thefilm illustrates his commitment to thechildren and the families who face life anddeath situations daily. Originally airsMonday, January 27 at midnight on VegasPBS Channel 10.

The Amish: American ExperienceTuesday, January 28 at 8 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10

his intriguing program answers many questions Americans have about this insistent-

ly insular religious community, whose intense faith and adherence to 300-year-old

traditions have by turns captivated and repelled, inspired and confused for more than

a century. With unprecedented access, built on patience and hard-won trust, the film

is the first to penetrate deeply and explore this attention-averse group. In doing so, the special

paints an intimate portrait of contemporary Amish faith and life. It questions why and how the

Amish, an insistently closed and communal culture, have thrived within one of the most open,

individualistic societies on earth; explores how, despite their ingrained submissiveness, the

Amish have successfully asserted themselves in resisting the encroachments of modern society

and government; and looks at what the future holds for a community whose existence is so root-

ed in the past.
