    Presidents MessageResolutions

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you

to 2013. By now youve probably calculatedyour miles or 2012 and are getting ready, i

you have not done so already, to begin log-ging new mileage or 2013.

Over the last three years Ethan Brook haspenned this column as President o BTCNJ.

Ive been asked to assume the presidentsposition and I look orward to serving you.

Im also very excited to be working with aady, willing and extremely able BTCNJ Board o Directors, hal o

hom are new to board governance. The 2013 board will now beomposed o veterans with long-standing institutional knowledge

nning the club, and new board members brimming with new per-

pectives and ideas. Its a terric mix o dedicated people.

mes Brown, the legendary soul singer, oten proclaimed that heas the hardest working man in show business. I would also like to

pply this sobriquet to Ethan Brook as it relates to the extraordinarymount o time, energy and eort he dedicated to our club over thest three years. As someone who worked closely with Ethan these

ast ew years, I can attest that he ate, drank and slept everythingTCNJ. Ethan is a guy who always puts the interests o the club rst.

e led by doing and never once did he claim personal credit or theuccess and continued growth o BTCNJ. He was there to paint last-

inute arrows or the Rally. He oten jumped on his bike to deliverew member and Rally brochures to NYC bike shops. And hed spendours writing articles to promote BTCNJ in the Bergen Record. He did

l o this and more as he worked with his board to guide BTCNJ toew heights. His dedication and passion or BTCNJ is, and continues

    o be, the real deal.

y goals as I work with the new BTCNJ board are simple andraightorward:

First and oremost, to better enrich your experience with BTCNJin every way possible. This is to be maniested by how we, who

are running the club, communicate to you and vice versa; andmost importantly, how we can improve on the already success-

    ul daily ride schedule.

To continue to guide and plan or BTCNJs long term viability. For

many o us, BTCNJ is a very important part o our lives. We want

to ensure its longevity and keep passing on this un, entertain-ing and lie-enriching entity or new members to enjoy throughthe years.

And nally to broaden and strengthen our voice in bicycleadvocacy. As avid bicyclists, were living in very interesting times.

Cycling is rapidly becoming a viable transportation alternativein many cities around the globe. In cities like Portland, Boulder,

Amsterdam and Copenhagen, cycling has become an integralpart o the transportation inrastructure. Studies indicate that

as cycling becomes more o a citys transportation solution, the rate o cycling atalities actually decreases. Thats because

motorists become more aware and increasingly tolerant o

cyclists on the street. So its incumbent (and actually in our best

interest) to promote cycling not only as we use it, but as a v

New Jersey transportation alternative in the years ahead. Trecent announcement that Jersey City will construct 50+ m

o cycling paths is indeed very encouraging.

Heres our great team that will lead the way in 2013: Terry Gri-n, who ran membership or the last couple o years, will now b

Vice-President; Harold Todman will take over the Membership c

Barbara Augenblick will direct publicity ater many years overseing Tours; Bill Telgheder will administer Tours; Larry Schwartz w

continue to serve as Webmaster and MasterLink editor; the clunances will be handled by Frank Wimer, our new Treasurer; Ste

Greenberg will return as the Ramapo Rally chair; Ted Semegrancontinue to be our Legislative Action advocate; Andres Tiriboc

will direct rides as Ride Captain; Leslie Felsen will supervise SpeEvents and Volunteer Development; Kathryn Davenport will beclub Secretary; and Ethan Brook will be Past-President. All o ou

board members are very active cyclists who log many miles, learides and multi-day tours. They too are the real deals. Were all a

able to hear your comments, questions, ideas, insights, etc. Scrdown to the Board Members link on the home page o the BTC

web site to contact any o us.

And now a nal word on the most important people in our club

ride leaders and event volunteers. Simply put, without the comment and dedication o our ride leaders, there would be no BTC

These are people who dedicate hours planning, plotting and thleading rides through the year. Its because o these generous p

that were able to provide such a rich schedule o rides every dathrough the year. They are indeed the backbone o our club. I yconsidering becoming a rider leader this year, reach out to And

Tiribocchi at [email protected] . Similarly, our picnic, Year inReview, Anniversary Party, the Bergen County Tour, the Ramapo

and all other events, are smashing successes due to the magnamous eort o our volunteers. I know time is a precious commo

but i you can nd it in your schedule to volunteer or any o ouevents, please contact Leslie Felsen at [email protected].

As you may know, we have two very important events on tap thmonth. Our annual Year in Review member meeting is Thursday

January 10th. Its always a great evening, so i you can do so, stoby and enjoy the show. Je Martz and Charles Cino have earned

our many thanks or the long hours they have invested in this yproduction

And Barbara Ineld is putting the nal touches on our 35th Ann

sary Party, slated or Saturday evening, January 19th. We have mthan 100 people already signed up and its promising to be a grevent. You can reserve your spot by clicking on the link that ap

in the Anniversary Party ad in this issue. I hope to see you there

Best wishes or a happy and healthy New Year!

By andres tiriBocchiAter your rst day o cycing, one dream is inevitabe. A

memory o motion ingers in the musces o your egs, and

round and round they seem to go. You ride through Dream-

and on wonderu dream bicyces that change and grow.

H.G. Wes, The Whees o Chance

n a warm and sunny Christmas morning on the southern hemi-

here o the Americas I ell in love with a bicycle. The shinning goldame and an unmistakable Italian brand name brought excitement

nd a sense o pride to that encounter. But everything changed atere rst day o cycling.

ke a newborn opening his eyes to the world, I embarked on aurney that no one could have ever imagined, and that bicycle

orphed into many dierent characters. It was a means o transpor-tion, a ticket to adventures, a vehicle o dreams and antasies, but

sentially, the instrument o independence that opened the bound-ies o a world limited by the end o the street were the group o

    ends used to play.

e grew up together; the never ending quest or speed became a

assion as we raced on our rst improvised time trial around theock. The thirst or the impossible ueled that elusive wheelie, and

so drew the rst blood trying to jump that deant cli at the en-ance o a nearby park.

ut a tragic date on that relationship was set: the rite o passage todulthood in Uruguay, my country, was marked by the eighteenth

rthday, when citizens get the right to vote and the permit to drive.dly, that piece o paper covered in plastic that turns boys into

ear men drove the bicycle into oblivion. The passion or speed anddrenaline was going to nd dierent channels in the next years, but

also was orced to compete with many important endeavors thate was bringing.

any years and many thousands o miles had gone by, when theddest combination o circumstances brought together the need

r a dierent liestyle and the opening o the rst imported bicycleore in India, the place I called home at that time. By chance or by

te, on a hot and oggy evening in New Delhi a sparkly gold andack mountain bike reignited the passion, and one more time, ev-ything changed ater that new rst day o cycling.

araphrasing the words o E. Hemingway on the previous column, was with that bicycle that I learned the contours o several places,ut most signicantly, it helped me to learn many things about

ysel and to understand that it was time to embrace dierentojects. The need or speed that had been living inside was about to

e joined by other passions, and sharing the culture o cycling with

hers became a new goal. Discovering the Himalayan Mountainsth a group o international high school students, organizing a

olorul group o amateur cyclists in my home country, crossing theagnicent South American Pampas with a group o people sharing

e most unlikely midlie crisis; no challenge seemed small, until Ied racing.

evitably, the rst day o racing changed many things in my lie.

A cross country mountain bike event or amateurs became a rea

ity check a humiliating one, actually and showed the delusiostate o mind that a man may achieve when he does not recogn

his own limitations. Not having the age, the physical condition, the proper equipment or such endeavor should have been eno

arguments to keep the bicycle romance on a relaxed, almost plarelationship; nevertheless, the need or keeping the passion alivred a new range o dreams.

Riding became training, ood turn into uel, and the pursuit o

and speed even implied a shit in nancial priorities. Moreover, strengthened the bond with a group o people who enjoyed de

conventional thinking, and embraced sports at dierent stages their lives, only driven by the personal satisaction o achieving goals.

Chasing that dream was stopped only by an accident, and the r

eeling that I was stretching my own luck and the comprehensioand patience rom an always supporting wie. Ater a long recov

the rst day o cycling was going to change again many things.serene touring trip on a nice spring morning marked the ociao the comeback, the rst time on a road bicycle, and the rst ri

    a BTCNJ member.

Since then, I have logged as many miles and riends as I did bebecoming a New Jersey neighbor. Against my own skepticism, t

road grew to be a source o gratication and soon sprints, paceland hill climbs shared a place in my heart with singletracks, droand berms. And a new dreamland o dierent bicycles became

    o lie.

The sequence o acts is still blurry, but here I am writing to youyour new Rides Captain.

Taking the torch that Wade Wegner let or me in the last editioo the Masterlink, rst I want to thank him or his good advice a

leadership. Despite the evident dierences between us age,

skills we probably share more cycling DNA that it may be vithe need or speed, the passion or the Italian hills, the relentleslie that a bicycle can change lives even beore spinning its whe

We will miss him as RC but he will always be leading us either atront o the peloton on a Gran Fondo climb or at a charity event

My pledge to the BTCNJ and its members: to keep alive the passor a wonderul sport that brings us together. It is the same com

ment that has been pushing the wheels o my cycling dreams odecades.

If want your 2012 total mileage included on the nextedition of MasterLin, please send the information
