What is a Parasite, Fungi and Foci?

Parasite• An organism that lives in or on another organism (its host) and benefits by deriving

nutrients at the host's expense.

Virus • An infective agent that typically consists of a nucleic acid molecule in a protein coat,

is too small to be seen by light microscopy.• An infection or disease caused by such an agent.

Foci• The centre of interest or activity.

Microbe Sizes An extraordinary variety of viruses, bacteria, parasites, and organisms stand ready to attack us and feed off our bodies' cells.

Depending on the type of parasite being treated, and the time it has invaded the body, dictates the types of treatments and some can be very persistent and stubborn.

The approximate sizes of microbes can be approximated by using the following rule of thumb:

• VIRUSES are the smallest of all infectious agents, averaging about 100 nanometers (100 billionths of a meter) in length. They have so few genes and proteins of their own that in order to reproduce they need to commandeer the machinery of the cells they invade.

• BACTERIA vary widely in size and shape, but tend to be at least 10 times larger than viruses, or at least 1 micrometer long. They are single-cell organisms that reproduce independently.

• SINGLE-CELL ORGANISMS tend to be at least 10 times larger than bacteria, or about .01 milimeter long.

• MULTI CELLULAR ORGANISMS are so large they can usually be seen with the naked eye. Tapeworms, for instance, can reach a length of 6 meters (20 feet).

Common Sources of Infection

� Food and water are the most common sources of parasite and invading organism transmission.

� Tap water has been found to be contaminated with harmful organisms.

� Both plant and animal foods carry parasites, and cleaning and cooking methods often do not often destroy them before ingestion.

� The transfer of parasites and viruses can also be through human to human interaction.

Pets and Infection � Animals can become infected with parasites and unhealthy organisms. Our pets

can become infected by organisms on their body/fur which can then be transferred to humans. the potential for transmission of parasitical invading organism infection from animals to humans is extremely high.

� Dogs tent to have a higher level of HCl and a lower stomach pH. When more HCl is produced CCK (Cholecystokinin) increases, producing more bile and therefore they are less likely to contract parasites.

� Making a parasite cleanse an essential part of an effective health maintenance program for both people and animals alike.

Pets and Parasites

� Pets harbour many parasites that can be transmitted to humans and cause disease. � Hydatid tapeworm, Echinoccocus granulosus, Can be transmitted from dog to

human and gives rise to massive cysts in the internal organs � Pets also carry Toxocara and Toxoplasma. � Dogs carry Giardia and Cryptosporidiosis, which could be strains potentially

infective to humans

Bacteria� Often harmless except in patients with impaired defences

� Pathogenic (harmful) bacteria cause disease, often by toxins and enzymes that damage host tissues

� Can provoke acute or chronic inflammatory reactions

Pleomorphism of Micro-organisms & Theories of Infectious Disease Pleomorphism is the concept that cells, and especially one-celledmicroorganisms, can change form under certain conditions to cells of another type.

Ø E.g. Pleomorphism in human cells might be the morphing of skin cells to connective tissue cells, or of blood cells to bone tissue.

Enderlein found that every living cell contains two distinct kinds of microorganisms called endobionts (which means “inside life”). * Please refer to the handout “Prof. Dr. G. Enderlein”

These microorganisms live inside the cell and cannot be removed from it. They play an important role in cellular health. The state of a persons health is determined by the state of development of these organisms

The Three Stages

Enderlein found that all microbes that live permaently in our bodies go through three stages:

• The Primitive Stage (Microbe)

• The Middle Stage (Bacteria)

• The End Stage (Fungus)

• The Viral stage (Virus) pH acid

L-Form Bacteria • L-form bacteria, also known as cell wall deficient bacteria, are a phase of bacteria that

are very small and lack cell walls.

• Researchers have identified over 50 different species of bacteria capable of transforming into the L- form and it is likely that more species will be found.

• L-form bacteria are pleomorphic, that is, they can change size and shape. During much of their lifetimes they are tiny, about 0.01 microns in diameter.

• Since they are smaller than viruses or fungal particles, they cannot be seen with a normal optical microscope.

• Treatment with penicillin does not merely select for L-forms (which are penicillin resistant) but actually induces L-form growth.

• Once bacteria have transformed into the L-form they can no longer be detected by many standard laboratory procedures.

MycoplasmaMycoplasma infection is respiratory illness caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, a microscopic organism related to bacteria.

Pleomorphic organism that lacks a cell wall: • Selective affinity for respiratory epithelial cells • Ability to produce hydrogen peroxide cell disruption and damage BBC membranes

MRSAMethicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria (MRSA). • This nasty superbug—a by-product of our long love affair with antibiotic

drugs—effects thousands of people a year with food poisoning!

• MRSA infections can target the blood, lungs, organs, and skin.

• These infections can be harmful since they are resistant to most common antibiotics.

VirusesRequire living cells for their replication • Infection may become latent and then reactivated • Harmful effects include cell death, acute and chronic inflammatory reactions, triggering

of auto-immune disease and neoplastic transformation.

Common viruses in Australia: Glandular Fever, Epstein Barr Virus, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Herpes Virus, AIDS, Chicken POX, Hepatitis A, B, C, Rota Virus , Ross River Fever, Barmah Forest, Lyme Disease, Viral Meningitis, Hand foot and Mouth, Measles, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), Shingles (Herpes Zoster)

Yeast & FungiRequire living cells for their replication • Mycoses• Opportunistic infection• Mycotoxins

Candida• Pathogenic yeast• Occurs in 3 forms: Yeast, mycelial, protoplast (intracellular) determined

by environment. • Highly antigenic - has more than 90 cellular and cytoplasmic Ag’s, many

of which are similar to those in human cells and many shared with other yeasts.

• This is probably responsible for cross- reactivity with other yeasts and moulds and for its propensity to trigger auto-immune reactions

Diagnosis

• History: Symptoms, predisposing factors, response to treatment. • Laboratory tests: C.D.S.A., Candida Antibodies, Amino Acid profile, E.F.A.

profile, Yeast allergies.

Candida Symptoms • CNS: Depression (PMT-D), irritability

(PMT-A), Memory loss and confusion, poor concentration, dizziness, headaches, drowsiness and fatigue.

• Gut: Heartburn, indigestion, bloating and flatulence, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation(more likely), mouth ulcers, peri- anal irritation.

• Genito-urinary: Fluid retention, menstrual disorders and cramps, PMS, endometriosis, cystitis (sterile).

• Musculo-skeletal: aches and cramps, joint pain and swelling.

• Upper respiratory tract: nasal stuffiness/sinusitis, recurrent sore throats, chronic bronchitis.

• Skin and mucus membranes: mouth ulcers, dandruff/seborrheic dermatitis, recurrent fungal infections, tinea, psoriasis.

• Multiple food allergies

• Auto-immune: psoriasis, grave’s disease, ovarian, other endocrine.

Parasites• Protozoa - unicellular organisms • Helminths - worms (roundworms, tapeworms, and flukes) • Humans may be either definitive hosts or inadvertent intermediate hosts

Prions• Proteinaceous infective particles • Endogenous homologous protein, which accumulates in excessive quantities in the brain,

when the exogenous prion is ingested Ø E.g. bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease)

Cestodes (Tapeworms)Fish tapeworm, Diphyllobothriasis• People who eat raw fish• Mild GI symptoms• Vitamin B12 deficiency• Thoroughly cook all fish, or

freeze at -10℃ for 48 hours

Beef tapeworm, Taeniasis saginata• Epigastric pain, diarrhoea and

weight loss• Cook beef to 56℃ for 5 minutes

Alveolar Hydatid Disease, Echinococcosus multilocularis• Cysts in the liver, lungs, lymph

nodes

Pork tapeworm, Taenia solium, (Cysticercosis)• Cysticerosis is caused by the

development of cysticerci in various sites of the body

• Seizures, mental disturbances, focal neurological defects, intracerebral lesions, or ocular, cardiac or spinal lesions.

Hydatid Disease, Echinococcosusgranulosus• Dog tapeworm is the causative

agent. • Common in sheep raising

countries• May cause cysts in the liver or

other organs

Nematodes (Roundworms)Ascaiasis• May cause stunted growth, abdominal

pain and intestinal obstruction. Larval migration through the lungs may cause pulmonary symptoms - cough, dyspnea, hemoptysis, eosinophilic pneumonitis.

Hookworm, Ancylostomiasis • 25% of the world’s population

infected • Iron deficiency anemia caused by

blood loss at the site of intestinal attachment accompanied by cardiac complications

• Gastrointestinal and nutritional/metabolic symptoms

• Local skin irritation (ground itch) • Respiratory symptoms

Toxocariasis • Often caused by exposure to

puppies • VLM (visceral larva migrans)

preschool children. Larvae invade liver, heart, lungs brain, muscles and cause fever, anorexia, weight loss, cough, wheezing rashes

• OLM (ocular larva migrans) larva produce ophthalmologic lesions

Trematode (Fluke) Schistosomiasis, schistosoma sp. (bilharzia)

• contaminated water to snails to fish or crustaceans

• cause chronic disease of the intestine, liver and Gastro-urinary tract.

Acute schistosomiasis is common and severe in visitors to endemic areas (Asia) and may occur 2-4 weeks after exposure - fever, chills, nausea, abdominal pain malaise, myalgia, urticarial rashes, and marked eosinophilia.

Ticks & Rickettsia

Lyme DiseaseBorrelia burgdorferi, (spirochaete) • Fever, fatigue, headaches, mylagia, arthaligia, muscle and joint pain and sore

and swollen lymph glands • The first symptom is usually a characteristic pink or red rash that starts as a

small red spot that gradually spreads in a much larger circle with a characteristic bulls-eye appearance. This normally happens between 3 and 32 days after being bitten by an infected tick. Not everyone with Lyme disease gets the rash.

• In later stages of Lyme disease the infection spreads through the bloodstream and can cause infection in the brain and membranes surrounding the brain (meningoencephalitis) and infection in or around the heart (endocarditis, myocarditis or pericarditis).

• The disease can also cause inflammation of joints and cause joint pain and long-term neurological involvement.

ProtozoaToxoplasmosis, Toxoplasma gondii• High where preference for eating raw or rare meat • One of the most common of human infections throughout the world.

Malaria, Plasmodium sp.• Acute fever often fatal

Giardia, Giardiasis lamblia (Travellers Diarrhoea)• Intestinal infection causing diarrhoea and weight loss

Cryptosporidiosis, Cryptosporidium • most common non-viral cause of diarrhoea worldwide • when ingested sporozoites come out of the oocyst and invade the epithelial cells of the

intestine • resistant to disinfectant including the levels of chlorine in treated water

Management Strategies Using BioResearch

BioResearch Protocols BioResearch Protocol 1• Formula WRM 10 drops, 3 times daily, 1/2 hour before meals • Formula VSL 6 drops, 3 times daily, 1/2 hour after meals • For 30 days
