Message from Program Chair
Cities are the economic engines of growth in India, as much as anywhere in
the world. As India’s economy and population continues to grow and rapidly
urbanize, there is a dire need of qualified urban planners to plan and manage
our cities. Planning for a city, town or an urban area is a challenging yet a
greatly rewarding task, especially for those who are interested in transforming
and improving them. It requires multi-layered understanding of the land use,
transportation, infrastructure, economics, socio-cultural and environmental
factors that influence the places where we reside, work, shop, entertain and live
our lives.
Master of Urban Planning (MUP) program is a flagship program of the Faculty
of Planning since its foundation as School of Planning in 1972. This two years’
program is designed to provide the students with excellent education and
exposure to national and international best-practices. The studios and the
courses are carefully designed to equip them with practical and theoretical
knowledge and skills for excelling in their professional careers, be it in public
sector or in private sector in national or global firms or organizations.
Our faculty members include eminent professionals, practitioners and researchers
with nation-wide and international experience in preparing Development Plans,
Master Plans, Development Regulations/Bylaws, Planning Acts and Government
Policies, Regional Plans, Town Planning Schemes, Local Area Plans for TODs,
Smart Cities, Heritage Precincts etc.
During the program, the MUP students not only get exposure to national and
international models of development and best practices; but in the final semester
of the program the students get to work closely, on one-to-one basis, with the
individual faculty and/or professionals on real projects under Directed Research
Project (DRP) or Guided Research Project (GRP) format.
We are proud of our alumni and recent graduates, who are some of the best and
highly skilled professionals capable of working on the whole range of planning
projects in national and international settings.
It is our pleasure to invite you to learn more about the high quality of education,
outstanding faculty, academic community and excellent facilities on the campus.

Course Information
The two-year course of Master of Urban Planning (MUP) program is structured to prepare
new-millennium urban planners, who can not only practice in the conventional planning
regime, but also push the practice beyond the conventional approaches, and evolve
new viable models to deal with the challenges of the new millennium.
Land is a limited, non-renewable resource. At the same time, it is also the most crucial
resource for urbanization. Every kind of urban development requires land, may it be
construction of new buildings, construction of transport projects like roads, metro,
or installing underground infrastructure. Therefore, unlike other specializations in
planning, the urban planning by nature must be comprehensive in approach, inclusive
in nature and must seek to integrate other areas of planning such as transportation,
infrastructure, housing, environment, economics.
The two-years program is organized in four semesters, and summer/winter schools
during the semester breaks. Each of these semesters are organized around specific
Studios with more than half of the total credits assigned to the studios. The students are
expected to spend most of their time, mind and energy working on the studio projects.
The program begins with common foundation semester, when the students learn the
basic skills and approaches to observe, survey, record, analyse, prioritize and present
the existing urban issues.
The subsequent semesters focus on learning to prepare statutory plans for urban
areas at different scales; Development Plans/Master Plans at macro level, and TPS and
LAPs of various kinds for planning TOD, CBD, Smart City, Heritage Areas etc at micro
level. The students are encouraged to think outside the box and consider innovative
approaches. Critical thinking is infused through debates and discussions during lectures
and studio sessions. During the semesters, the students learn various ways of managing
and facilitating growth through tools such as zoning, regulations, incentivise, provision
of transport and infrastructure projects, etc., in a way that minimizes the detrimental
impacts on environment, economy, and quality of life.
The studios area supported by relevant courses which complement the studios. These
courses are designed to provide theoretical underpinning, teach various methods and
impart key skills required to carry out a real project in the field. They equip students
with the knowledge on topics ranging from urban economics, legislations, urban finance,

project formulation and devising built-form regulations to name a few.
Beyond these, the students are also offered various electives and summer-winter schools
when they can take opportunities to go to other cities in the world and closely study and
learn from them.
