AbouttheEckInstituteforGlobalHealthTheUniversityofNotreDame'sEckInstituteforGlobalHealthisauniversity-wideenterprisethatrecognizeshealthasafundamentalhumanrightandendeavorstopromoteresearch,training,andservicetoadvancehealthstandardsforallpeople,especiallypeopleinlow-andmiddle-incomecountries,whoaredisproportionatelyimpactedbypreventablediseases.TheEckInstituteforGlobalHealthwasestablishedin2010andisfundedthroughagenerousendowmentfromtheFrankEckSr.Family.TheInstitutebringstogetheradiversegroupoffaculty,staff,andstudentsfromseveraldifferentCollegesandDepartmentswhoseresearchandteachingaddressquestionsthatarerelevanttoaddressinghealthdisparities.NotreDamehasalongtraditionofexcellenceinresearchandtrainingintheareaoftropicalinfectiousdiseasesandthebiologyoftheirarthropodvectors.TheEckInstituteforGlobalHealthseekstobuildontheUniversity’sstrengthsininfectiousdiseaseresearchandtrainingtofostertheinterdisciplinaryresearch,training,andpartnershipsthataredemandedtoholisticallyaddresshealthdisparitiesaroundtheworld.TheInstituteprovidesacentralhomefororganizingandcoordinatingglobalhealthactivitiesacrosstheUniversityofNotreDame.Trainingthenextgenerationofglobalhealthresearchersandleadersisundertakenattheundergraduate,graduate,andpostdoctorallevel,includingtheMasterofScienceinGlobalHealthprogram.MoreinformationonresearchactivitiesofeachoftheInstitute’sfacultymemberscanbefoundhere(http://globalhealth.nd.edu/research-members/members/).ThemanyexceptionalintellectualandacademicresourcesontheNotreDamecampuspositiontheEckInstituteforGlobalHealthtomakesignificantcontributionstowardsthegoalthatallpeopleenjoythehighestattainablestandardofhealth.MasterofScienceinGlobalHealthTheMasterofScienceinGlobalHealthprogramprovidesanengagingscience-centrictraininginthecontextofglobalhealth.Theprogramisaone-year,intensivetrainingthatincludestwosemestersofcourseworkandone(summer)semesterofafieldpracticum,whichiscentraltotheCapstoneProject.Thecourseworkfocusesonprovidingstudentswithaworkingknowledgeoftheglobalhealthchallengesfacingourworldandtheskillstoparticipateinresearchthataddressesthosechallenges.Theprogramallowsstudentstomakeconnectionsbetweenclassroomtraininginglobalhealthtopicsandtherealhealthneedsofresource-poorpopulationsaroundtheworldthroughhands-onexperience.Scienceisunderstoodinthecontextofitspromisetoimprovethehealthofthosepeoplewhoaredisproportionatelyaffectedbypreventablediseases.TheMasterofScienceinGlobalHealthprogramissupportedbyfacultyandstaffwithexpertiseandresearchinavarietyoffieldsthatrepresenttheinterdisciplinarynatureofglobalhealth.Furthermore,facultyhaveresearchpartnershipsthroughouttheworldthatprovideinternationalanddomesticfieldworkopportunitiesforstudents’CapstoneProjects.TheMasterofScienceinGlobalHealthprogramandcurriculumareinalignmentwiththeGlobalHealthCompetenciespromotedbytheConsortiumofUniversitiesforGlobalHealth.ThesewerebuiltontheASPPHGlobalHealthCompetencyModelandtheMPHCoreCompetencyModel(AppendixA).TheMasterofScienceinGlobalHealthatNotreDameaddsafewareasoffocusuniquetoourprogramthatwebelievearecrucialcompetenciesforglobalhealthstudents.References:GlobalHealthCompetencyModel,FinalVersion1.1,October31,2011.AssociationofSchoolsofPublicHealth.Retrievedfrom:http://www.aspph.org/educate/models/masters-global-health/

TheCapstoneProjectIntroductiontotheCapstoneProjectTheCapstoneProjectisauniqueandexcitingcorecomponentoftheMasterofScienceinGlobalHealthcurriculum.Itenablesstudentstomakeconnectionsbetweenclassroomlearningandrealhealthneedsofpeopleinresource-poorsettingsaroundtheworldthrougha6-8weekfieldexperiencethatispartoftheirresearch.WorkingwithNotreDame(ND)facultyandtheirdomesticandinternationalpartners,studentshavetheopportunitytodesignandimplementaresearchprojectwiththepotentialforrealworldimpact.AllMasterofScienceinGlobalHealthstudentsarerequiredtosuccessfullysubmitandpresentaCapstoneProjectinordertofulfilltherequirementsoftheMasterofScienceinGlobalHealthdegree.Thisprojectisarigorousacademicrequirementandistheculminationoflearninginwhichthestudentappliesknowledgeandskillsacquiredduringthetwosemestersintheclassroomtothestudyofaglobalhealthproblem.Thestudentwillsubmitascholarlyreportbasedonthisprojectandpresentanoraldefensetoafacultycommittee.TheCapstoneProjectconsistsoforiginalresearchorliterature-basedresearchconductedbythestudentunderthementorshipofaNDfacultymember.Thismayinvolvedatacollection,useofsecondarydata,orreviewingliteraturerelatedtoaglobalhealthproblem.ForaCapstoneProject,studentsareguidedbyamemberoftheNotreDamefaculty(CapstoneSupervisor)to:

- selectaCapstoneCommittee- reviewtheliteratureonaselectedtopic- framearesearchquestion- developandapplyamethodology- analyzetheinformation- reporttheresults- discussfindingsinrelationtotheresearchquestionsandwithinabroadglobalhealthcontext- prepareascholarlypaper(accordingtospecifiedformat)- presentthematerialinaformalsetting(capstonedefense)

Studentsmustdevelopanddemonstrateadeepandbroadknowledgeoftheirtopic,aswellasasolidunderstandingofhowtheirresearchfitsintotheoverallgoalofimprovingglobalhealth.Inadditiontothecompetenciesdevelopedintheclassroom,theCapstoneProjecthelpsstudentsconnectthesetopracticalskillstheywillneedforfutureworkinglobalhealth.TheCapstoneProjectisaccompaniedby10coursecreditsthroughouttheyear.ThepurposeoftheCapstoneclassesistwofold:1)prepareandsupporttheimplementationoftheCapstoneProject,and2)preparestudentsforthefinalrequirementsoftheCapstoneProject–thewrittenpaperandoraldefense.Classassignments,timelines,anddeliverablesforeachsemesterareconsistentwithstudentscompletingtheirprojectsinatimelyandsuccessfulmanner.ThethreeCapstoneCourses1)CapstoneSeminar–1creditsFallsemester;2)CapstoneResearch–3creditsSpringsemester;and3)CapstoneFieldResearch–6creditsSummersemesteraretherequiredsequentialpreparationforcompletionoftheCapstoneProject.Studentsmustobtainaminimumgradeof“B-“intheCapstoneSeminar(fallsemester)andCapstoneResearch(springsemester)courses.ThesearesequentialcoursesthatpreparethestudenttosuccessfullyundertaketheCapstoneFieldResearch(summersemester).Agradelowerthana“B-“indicatesthatthestudentisnotsufficientlypreparedtoadvancetothenextstage.Failuretoproceedthroughthissequencemayresultinastudent’sdismissalfromtheprogramasitdemonstratesaninabilitytoprepareforandexecuteaCapstoneProject,whichisakeyrequirementforcompletionoftheprogram.Student’sprogressthroughtheSpringsemesterwillbeassessedbyaformalmid-termgradetobesubmittedbyMarch8,2019,priortopurchaseofplaneticketsfortraveltotheirfieldsite.

CapstoneProjectProcessSelectionStudentsmeetwiththeprogrambeginningatorientationtodiscussinterestareas.StudentswillbeguidedtooneormorepotentialCapstoneSupervisorsbasedonthestudent’sinterest,background,andrequirementsofparticularprojects.Studentswillbeallowedtoapproachself-identifiedCapstoneSupervisorsonlyafterdiscussionwithCapstoneCoordinator,Dr.Ngai.StudentswillhavetwotothreeweekstoexploreprojectideaswithpotentialCapstoneSupervisors.Studentswillthensubmitarankingofchoicestotheprogram.TheprogramisresponsibleforassigningthefinalplacementofstudentswithaCapstoneSupervisorbyearlyOctober.OnceaCapstoneSupervisorisidentifiedandagreestoacceptthestudent,itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytosetupmeetingsandestablishaprojecttimelinewiththeirCapstoneSupervisor.ThestudentandCapstoneSupervisorwillcontinuetorefinethespecificresearchproject.ItisexpectedthatthestudentwillworkcloselywiththeCapstoneSupervisorthroughouttheresearchprocessandinthesubmissionoftheirfinalCapstoneProjectpaper.ThestudentisultimatelyresponsibleformeetingallprogramrequirementsrelatedtotheCapstoneProject.StudentswillalsobeassignedaspecificProgramAdvisorwhowillsupportthestudentandCapstoneSupervisorthroughouttheyear.ThestudentandCapstoneSupervisorshouldconsiderthefollowingastheydeveloparesearchplan:

1. Doestheprojectservethestatedneedsofthepartnerorganization?2. Istheresearchfeasiblewithintheallowedtimeframe(e.g.Highprobabilityofdataavailability?

Appropriatetrainingtoimplementmethodology?)Theprogramdiscouragesstudiesthatinvolvemultipleresearchapproaches,asthisisdifficultforstudentstomasterthedesign,implementation,andanalysistoimplementmultipleapproachesinthetimeallowed.

3. Doesthepartnersitehavethetechnicalcapabilityandinfrastructuretosupporttheresearch?4. Cantheresearchreasonablybecompletedwithintheallowedbudget?5. Arethereparticularbiosafetyorpersonalsafetyconcernsassociatedwiththeresearch?
