TheCapstoneProjectIntroductiontotheCapstoneProjectTheCapstoneProjectisauniqueandexcitingcorecomponentoftheMasterofScienceinGlobalHealthcurriculum.Itenablesstudentstomakeconnectionsbetweenclassroomlearningandrealhealthneedsofpeopleinresource-poorsettingsaroundtheworldthrougha6-8weekfieldexperiencethatispartoftheirresearch.WorkingwithNotreDame(ND)facultyandtheirdomesticandinternationalpartners,studentshavetheopportunitytodesignandimplementaresearchprojectwiththepotentialforrealworldimpact.AllMasterofScienceinGlobalHealthstudentsarerequiredtosuccessfullysubmitandpresentaCapstoneProjectinordertofulfilltherequirementsoftheMasterofScienceinGlobalHealthdegree.Thisprojectisarigorousacademicrequirementandistheculminationoflearninginwhichthestudentappliesknowledgeandskillsacquiredduringthetwosemestersintheclassroomtothestudyofaglobalhealthproblem.Thestudentwillsubmitascholarlyreportbasedonthisprojectandpresentanoraldefensetoafacultycommittee.TheCapstoneProjectconsistsoforiginalresearchorliterature-basedresearchconductedbythestudentunderthementorshipofaNDfacultymember.Thismayinvolvedatacollection,useofsecondarydata,orreviewingliteraturerelatedtoaglobalhealthproblem.ForaCapstoneProject,studentsareguidedbyamemberoftheNotreDamefaculty(CapstoneSupervisor)to:

Studentsmustdevelopanddemonstrateadeepandbroadknowledgeoftheirtopic,aswellasasolidunderstandingofhowtheirresearchfitsintotheoverallgoalofimprovingglobalhealth.Inadditiontothecompetenciesdevelopedintheclassroom,theCapstoneProjecthelpsstudentsconnectthesetopracticalskillstheywillneedforfutureworkinglobalhealth.TheCapstoneProjectisaccompaniedby10coursecreditsthroughouttheyear.ThepurposeoftheCapstoneclassesistwofold:1)prepareandsupporttheimplementationoftheCapstoneProject,and2)preparestudentsforthefinalrequirementsoftheCapstoneProject–thewrittenpaperandoraldefense.Classassignments,timelines,anddeliverablesforeachsemesterareconsistentwithstudentscompletingtheirprojectsinatimelyandsuccessfulmanner.ThethreeCapstoneCourses1)CapstoneSeminar–1creditsFallsemester;2)CapstoneResearch–3creditsSpringsemester;and3)CapstoneFieldResearch–6creditsSummersemesteraretherequiredsequentialpreparationforcompletionoftheCapstoneProject.Studentsmustobtainaminimumgradeof“B-“intheCapstoneSeminar(fallsemester)andCapstoneResearch(springsemester)courses.ThesearesequentialcoursesthatpreparethestudenttosuccessfullyundertaketheCapstoneFieldResearch(summersemester).Agradelowerthana“B-“indicatesthatthestudentisnotsufficientlypreparedtoadvancetothenextstage.Failuretoproceedthroughthissequencemayresultinastudent’sdismissalfromtheprogramasitdemonstratesaninabilitytoprepareforandexecuteaCapstoneProject,whichisakeyrequirementforcompletionoftheprogram.Student’sprogressthroughtheSpringsemesterwillbeassessedbyaformalmid-termgradetobesubmittedbyMarch8,2019,priortopurchaseofplaneticketsfortraveltotheirfieldsite.

CapstoneProjectProcessSelectionStudentsmeetwiththeprogrambeginningatorientationtodiscussinterestareas.StudentswillbeguidedtooneormorepotentialCapstoneSupervisorsbasedonthestudent’sinterest,background,andrequirementsofparticularprojects.Studentswillbeallowedtoapproachself-identifiedCapstoneSupervisorsonlyafterdiscussionwithCapstoneCoordinator,Dr.Ngai.StudentswillhavetwotothreeweekstoexploreprojectideaswithpotentialCapstoneSupervisors.Studentswillthensubmitarankingofchoicestotheprogram.TheprogramisresponsibleforassigningthefinalplacementofstudentswithaCapstoneSupervisorbyearlyOctober.OnceaCapstoneSupervisorisidentifiedandagreestoacceptthestudent,itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytosetupmeetingsandestablishaprojecttimelinewiththeirCapstoneSupervisor.ThestudentandCapstoneSupervisorwillcontinuetorefinethespecificresearchproject.ItisexpectedthatthestudentwillworkcloselywiththeCapstoneSupervisorthroughouttheresearchprocessandinthesubmissionoftheirfinalCapstoneProjectpaper.ThestudentisultimatelyresponsibleformeetingallprogramrequirementsrelatedtotheCapstoneProject.StudentswillalsobeassignedaspecificProgramAdvisorwhowillsupportthestudentandCapstoneSupervisorthroughouttheyear.ThestudentandCapstoneSupervisorshouldconsiderthefollowingastheydeveloparesearchplan:

1. Doestheprojectservethestatedneedsofthepartnerorganization?2. Istheresearchfeasiblewithintheallowedtimeframe(e.g.Highprobabilityofdataavailability?

Appropriatetrainingtoimplementmethodology?)Theprogramdiscouragesstudiesthatinvolvemultipleresearchapproaches,asthisisdifficultforstudentstomasterthedesign,implementation,andanalysistoimplementmultipleapproachesinthetimeallowed.

3. Doesthepartnersitehavethetechnicalcapabilityandinfrastructuretosupporttheresearch?4. Cantheresearchreasonablybecompletedwithintheallowedbudget?5. Arethereparticularbiosafetyorpersonalsafetyconcernsassociatedwiththeresearch?

ImplementationTheCapstonecoursesarerequiredforallMasterofScienceinGlobalHealthstudents.TheCapstoneProjectisaccompaniedby10coursecreditsthroughouttheyear.Classassignments,timelines,anddeliverablesforeachsemesterareconsistentwithstudents'completingtheirprojectsinatimelyandsuccessfulmanner.Studentsareencouragedtofollowtherecommendedtimelinedetailedinthisdocument.

GH68550:CapstoneSeminar(Fall):1creditInstructor:Dr.HeidiBeidingerCapstoneSeminarclassprovidesthefoundationfortheCapstoneProjectandsupportsstudentsastheydeveloparesearchprojectinconsultationwithaCapstoneSupervisorandCommittee.Theclasswillfocusonstrengtheningscientificwritingskillsthroughthewritingof:1)annotatedbibliography;2)literaturereview;and3)researchprojectproposal.Thecourseintroducesthemanyconsiderationsandlogisticsofconductingresearchinglobalhealth.Inparallel,studentsbegintomeetregularlywiththeirCapstoneSupervisorto:1)developaresearchquestion;2)proposeaCapstoneCommittee;3)dependingontheproject,undertakebackgroundresearchand/orlaboratoryinvestigationand/ordataanalysis,includinglearningmethods.Finally,studentswillscheduleaCapstoneCommitteemeetingandpresenttheirProjectProposalbeforetheendofthefallsemestertotheirCommittee.Studentsareencouragedtocompletetravelhealthrequirements(physiciansapproval,vaccinesandmedicines)whiletheyareathomeoverwinterbreak,unlesstheyplantouseuniversityhealthservices.
