The Graduate Certificate in Business is an entry and exit qualification for the Master of Management (8431). For those who do not qualify for direct entry into the master’s program, you may be eligible for entry into the Graduate Certificate. Upon successful completion of the Graduate Certificate, you can articulate into the Master of Management. Alternatively, if for whatever reason you choose not to continue to complete the master’s program, you can exit with a Graduate Certificate.

Entry requirements

Master of Management

A recognised bachelor’s degree in any discipline or specialisation.

Students with a related business degree can gain RPL for the four courses outlined below, meaning they can acquire a master’s degree by studying a further eight courses.

Note: Students that do not meet the entry requirements for the master’s program may use the successful completion of the graduate certificate as a pathway, provided they meet the specific entry requirements detailed below.

Graduate Certificate in Business

A recognised bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any discipline or specialisation, or a minimum of three years’ relevant work experience. Relevant work experience includes clerical or administrative work in a commercial or public service organisation, supervisory or management, banking, finance or marketing experience or other business-related positions.

English Language

You may need to provide evidence of your English language proficiency to study at UNSW, depending on your educational background and citizenship. UNSW requires a minimum level of English language competency for enrolment. English language skills are essential for webinar comprehension and the completion of coursework, assignments and examinations.

If English is not your first language, you will need to provide proof of your English proficiency prior to receiving an offer to study at UNSW. You can do this by providing evidence that you meet one or more of the following criteria:

Course overview

In this course, you will develop an understanding of your abilities and the areas that need development for you to succeed in an organisational environment. You will gain an understanding of the key principles of self-management and working with others by drawing on insights from management, leadership, organisational behaviour and human resources disciplines. You will put together a personal development plan that you can use as you start your business career.

Financial ManagementCourse overview

Drawing on financial and management accounting and aspects of corporate finance, this course will introduce you to core business skills, including the ability to read and interpret financial statements, an understanding of sources of revenue and drivers of costs and the ways in which organisations are financed and how this impacts the business.

You will learn about the principles of extended reporting, such as the triple bottom line framework, which provides insights into social and environmental impact in addition to the financial performance of organisations. You’ll have the opportunity to apply the concepts covered in this course to real-world examples and gain an appreciation of how they can be used to help shape business decisions. By the end of the course, you’ll feel confident using accounting and financial information and be able to use it in a compelling non-technical manner.

Foundations of MarketingCourse overview

Marketing is concerned with the creation, communication and delivery of value to customers with a view to creating exchanges that build customer relationships and satisfy individual and organisational goals. While the tools and techniques available to organisations to market their products and services are changing rapidly, there are important underlying principles from consumer behaviour, marketing research and marketing strategy that can inform the most effective use of these tools and techniques.

This course introduces these core concepts, giving you the opportunity to identify how, as a marketing team, you would use them to create, communicate and deliver value to customers in different settings and contexts by focusing on a real-world case.

BusinessEconomicsCourse overview

It is important to understand the broad economic context in which organisations operate, as well as some of the economic principles that impact the firm.

This core course draws on macro and micro economic concepts to equip you with the knowledge and frameworks you’ll need to understand the economic context in which you are operating and how this might affect your organisation. You’ll have the opportunity to apply these principles to real-world examples and develop an understanding of how core economic principles can be used to help provide insights and shape effective strategies in a business. The course is delivered via Playconomics, the first Massive Interactive Immersive Course in the world, and reflects AGSM’s vision for innovation and best-in-class learning experiences.

Law, Regulation and EthicsCourse overview

Businesses exist within a complex legal and regulatory environment that shapes how they can and should operate. Beyond what is legal, organisations and individual managers also need to understand the ethical issues associated with the decisions that they and their organisations make.

This course introduces the core principles of business law, an overview of the various forms of regulation in a contemporary economy and a variety of ethical frameworks that can be used to guide business decision-making. The course achieves this by focusing on contemporary cases and business examples. It prepares you to recognise legal and regulatory issues and equips you with ethical frameworks to apply in your professional life.

Strategies for DisruptionCourse overview

Rapid changes in technology and the emergence of new business models are disrupting many, if not all, industries. Managers need to understand the sources of disruption and the strategies they can adopt to confront and take advantage of the current wave of disruption. You’ll draw on lessons from disruptors like Uber and Airbnb, as well as examples of established firms that have adapted to major disruption.

The course also introduces key concepts in business strategy and the opportunity to apply this understanding to identify successful strategies across a range of industries and sectors.

Managing with Digital TechnologyCourse overview

Digital technology is impacting every industry, and the next generation of managers needs to understand the role that it plays in an accelerating business world. This course introduces the fundamentals of technology used by contemporary organisations to develop digital products. It also introduces key elements of agile development and the role of the product manager when working with technical teams to deliver on a digital strategy. As part of this course, you’ll work together in a small team to develop a digital product strategy for an organisation.

Students who complete this course will gain several benefits, such as technology literacy for managers and executives, increased ability to recruit top technical talent for their organisations and an ability to confidently communicate with developers and other technical staff.

Analytics and BusinessCourse overview

This course provides an overview of how business analytics facilitates effective business decision-making at the strategic and operational levels. Business analytics entails the use of data to support business decision making, and this field has emerged as a crucial element of contemporary business practice. With the amount and range of information available to organisations growing exponentially, the ability to harness this information for evidence-based management has become a key capability.

This course provides the opportunity for you to gain the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours you need to make sound choices and effectively build your career. You will be introduced to career development theories and models that will assist you in developing personal management competencies.

Industry Experience overviewCourse overview

This course allows you to draw together all the elements of the program and apply them in a real-world setting. Completed as either a group consulting project or an individual assignment, this course prepares you for and provides you with the opportunity to apply theory to practice in a leading organisation and present findings and recommendations to executives from the organisation. Your studies throughout the program will support the successful completion of your real-world experience or strategic project. You will be introduced to a set of consulting skills and frameworks, as well as fundamentals of project management. This Industry Experience course is the capstone for the AGSM Master of Management and all relevant learning goals for the program will be assured in this course.
