Mount Mary’s Master of Arts in Education program requires 30 credits of coursework. Those credits will help you meet DPI continuing education requirements.

Master’s Degree

Required Professional Courses (12 credits)Focus on:

• Understanding of children and adolescents and the conditions under which learning takes place

• Organization of curricula

• Implementation of effective instructional strategies

• Social and cultural issues influencing educational policies and practices

Subject-area Specialization (12-18 credits)Choose from two different specialization paths:

• Special Emphasis Option: Take a minimum of nine credits in a single subject area such as art, adaptive education, English or reading, or in another area of interest such as Waldorf Education. Special emphases in adaptive education (12 credits) and reading (18 credits) meet requirements for Wisconsin DPI licenses.

• Practice-based Emphasis Option: Take courses in your subject areas and other areas having direct application to your classroom practice. You may choose from a wide array of electives. Courses do not need to be in a single subject or interest area.

Inquiry and Instructional Project (6 credits)Apply your knowledge, pedagogical expertise and craftsmanship to a classroom-based action research project.

Teaching OpportunitiesSpecial course sequences are available at Mount Mary if you wish to obtain a Reading License (316) or Waldorf Teacher Certification. Contact your admission counselor for more information.

principles to practiceA capstone research project gives you an opportunity to address a need within your classroom by developing and assessing an instructional plan based on best-practice research in the field.

the program at your paceYou can enroll as a master’s degree candidate or take individual courses at times that fit in your busy schedule. This program is designed for working teachers. Courses are offered on evenings during the school year or during the daytime and evenings in the summer. Depending on the number of courses you take each semester, you are able to finish the program in two to three years. If you’ve taken graduate courses at another university, you may be able to transfer up to nine credits to Mount Mary.
