Basic Details[]DescriptionOne area in which methodological needs are most evident is the field of Health Sciences, since a knowledge ofdesign, statistics and computer tools are essential in supporting research and in producing research projects andpublications in high-impact journals. This type of knowledge needs to be made available within graduate studies as this is when the graduates in thisambit, particularly those working in public health, are in a position to have hypotheses and data for evaluation andverification, and therefore their motivation and general environment is optimum for assimilating the concepts ofstatistics and design that are difficult traditionally for undergraduates. Our group, and the UAB, are pioneers within Spain as regards teaching such material. We began in 1977 with a distance course in Biostatistics that was complemented with two attendance-basedphases and a final exam on-site at the university campus. These studies were gradually consolidated in the field of public health within Spain. In this period, supplementarycourses were added in advanced statistics, computer tools and statistical packages, these latter being taughtin-class in the old Mathematical Psychology Laboratory, which is now the Applied Statistics and ModellingLaboratory. The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science Statistics was approved in the 1993/94 academic year. This allowedstudents¿depending on their needs¿to choose individual courses from within the programme or else to register forthe Diploma in its entirety, consisting of obligatory and optional modules. The Master¿s Degree in Research Methodology in Health Sciences was authorised in the 1999/2000 academicyear; this has been offered up to the present. It allows students¿again, depending on their interests¿to chooseindividual courses from within the programme to take take the full Diploma and, once this has been obtained, tocontinue their study until obtaining the master¿s degree. The master¿s degree programme saw the incorporation ofProfessor Miguel Delgado, Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, a leading Spanish expert in designwithin in the health sector. Our master's degree and the continuous training programme in Research Methodology in Health Sciences (whichcombines distance learning with a certain degree of attendance-based participation), is now a point of referencewith Spain, as evidenced by its considerable history and by the great number of students who have enrolled. The motivation of most students who are currently enrolled is to obtain solid methodological training in order to joinan applied-research team and/or in order to write a doctoral thesis.[]Admission requirementsGraduates in Medicine and Surgery, Veterinary and Psychology, working in the Public Health sector.[]CalendarStart date (dd/mm/yyyy): 04/11/2016End date (dd/mm/yyyy): 30/09/2017[]Openings50[]LocationA distància i al Laboratori d'Estadística Aplicada, Facultat de Psicologia, Edifici B[]Career opportunities- Essentially, it allows accreditation of methodological competence in order to applied research centres and groupswithin the health sphere.- Second, these skills are highly valued by the pharmaceutical industry and other companies within the healthcaresector.
