Prospectus Master of Development Studies
(Evening Program)
Department of Politics and Public Administration Islamic University, Kushita.

The Department of Politics and Public Administration, Islamic University, Kushtia has taken
an initiative to launch a professional master degree programme. The name of the programme is "Master of Development Studies" (MDS evening programme). MDS aims to provide a
challenging and innovative approach to study and practice on the contemporary development discourse, a rapidly growing area of study concerned with the people, society
and economy. As a professional programme, MDS is committed to promote high quality research on various development and governance issues of the developing nations in
general and Bangladesh in particular. Attracting students and scholars, MDS programme is also committed to offer interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological approaches
to study social, political and economic phenomenon and thereby promote greater public understanding, advance independent analyses, and encourage further professional
competence on issues related to development with a view to contributing towards poverty alleviation, combating corruption, sustainable development and good governance, the
cherished goals of the developing world.
Objectives of the Programme
The MDS has been designed to provide advanced level techniques of scientific studies for graduates and mid level career professionals' eager to enhance their knowledge, skills
or to acquire new ones. The programme determines to train young professionals willing to pursue a career in international or national (both Govt. and NGO) agencies or in the academic
world. The programme emphasizes on the development of research skill not only for further academic research but also in practical development work. The students of this
programme are expected to:
Understand the theoretical background about major debates in development studies
at the beginning of 21st century. Deepen the capacity in undertaking advance level analyses of the major current
issues and debates in contemporary development and development studies. Contribute in practical policy formulation and implementation;
Produce skilled corporate and dynamic cadres (teachers, managers, leaders and executives).
● Orient with the process of change, transition and development. Motivate the students to the applications of development study in any area of
practical concern. Develop comprehensive understanding of the development economics and
environment and equip with modern knowledge in business and technology. Shift kin career interests of many students and to meet the growing demand of local
organizations, entrepreneurs and other professional programme. Prepare talented, skilled and qualified personnel for the various profit and nonprofit
organizations. Sharpen analytical abilities on conceptual and research of development studies.

Admission requirements
The MDS is an interdisciplinary social science programme. The candidates of this programme must have either bachelor or master degree from any reputed university. The
academic session of MDS has been designed in two ways: First, MDS is offered through one academic year for those who have four year's bachelor degree or master degree. Second,
MDS is designed for two academic years for those who have a two or three year's bachelor degree. The students who are appeared at the final examination for Bachelor/Master
Degree in Islamic University or any other recognized university may apply for seeking admission test. However, the students appeared at the final examination for Bachelor/Master
Degree may be admitted provisionally but their admission shall be confirmed subject to passing the examination appeared for.
Readmission A student who unable to get the CGPA 2.5 or below in final examination may seek
readmission with the following adjustable batch. For readmission, a student shall have
to apply within one month after publication of the result. On readmission, grades earlier earned by a student in the programme shall be
cancelled and the student shall have to retake all the course-works (such as in course/ tutorial/ assignment/ thesis/ internship and viva-voice exam) and final examination.
A student will get only one chance for readmission during the programme. The readmitted student who fails to earn the CGPA 2.5 or complete successfully 40
credit hours of one-year course and 72 credit hours of two years course shall he dropped out from the MDS programme
Number of students 1) The number of students for one year MDS programme will be 80 and 2) The number of students for two years MDS programme will be 80.
Medium of instruction
The medium of instruction of teaching and examination would be both English and Bengali.
Duration of the MDS programme
l.The MDS programme will be a period of one academic year for those who has a
master degree or four years bachelor degree; 2.The MDS will be a period of two academic years for those who have a three or two
year's bachelor degree. 3.The academic year will be from January to December.

Grade point and letter grade The grade point and letter grade for MDS program shall be as follows:

Entry requirement for examination
Students shall be allowed to seat for the MDS final examination who have attended at least 60% of classes.
Each course teaching shall submit the class attendance report along with the register to the Coordinator at least 10 days before processing the examination entry form.
Credit transfer Credit transfer from any other programmes/ Universities/ Institutions shall not be allowed for MDS degree.
Evaluation procedure There will be a final examination of each course. The duration of the final examination
shall be of 4 hours. A student will give answer five questions out of eight and each question will carry 14 marks.
The teachers of the concerned department shall supervise and evaluate the thesis/dissertation. After the completion of thesis-dissertation, each student will
submit three copies of report (one copy for the supervisor, one copy for 2"d evaluator and another copy for Seminar Library of the Department).
Total marks obtained in each course, Viva-voce Exam and the thesis/dissertation shall be converted into LG (Letter Grade) and GP (Grade Point).
A student secured less than C grade (GP 2.5) in viva-voice examination and thesis/dissertation shall have no credit i.e. this mark will not be counted in
determining his/her results. The result will show the individual student's LG & GP in each course, CGPA
(Cumulative Grade Point Average), LG and the corresponding Grade Points (the

numerical marks will not be shown), the CGPA, LG and the interpretation of the
CGPA. The Controller of Examination shall publish the results of the programme and shall
provide the transcripts showing course wise LG and the corresponding Grade Points (the numerical marks will not be shown), the CGPA, LG and the interpretation of the
CGPA of the candidates for the MDS degree. Final grades will be spelled out clearly in the certificate/transcript [as example; `C+' (C plus); `A-' (A minus) ; `B' (B
regular)'].
Award of degrees The Islamic University, Kushtia will award degrees. For the MDS degree, each
student requires to; Complete successfully 40 credit hours in one year course and 72 credit hours in two years;
Earn a minimum CGPA of 2.5; Obtain a minimum Letter Grade of 'C+' (GP 2.5) in the Viva- Voice examination;
Obtain a minimum Letter Grade of `C' (GP 2.5) in the Thesis/Internship. Retaking examination and improving grade
Students obtained the letter grade 'B' or below (Less than GP-3.00) in any course shall
be allowed to appear in the grade improvement examination to improve the grade after the publication of the result of the MDS programme. To retake examination, a
student will be required to send application to the controller of Examination through the Coordinator of MDS within one month from the date of publication of the result. If a
student fails to improve, his/her CGPA in this case the previous CGPA will remain valid.
No improvement shall be allowed in the in-course/assignment/case study/ thesis/ internship and viva-voice examination.
Once a student fails to attend in the grade improvement examination shall not be given
further opportunity any more.

Years MDS Program
a. Requirement for Admission: Graduation from any Discipline from any
recognized university of Bangladesh or abroad.
b. Applicants having 2 or 3 Years Bachelor Degree from any discipline are eligible
for 2 Years MDS Program.
c. Applicants having 4 Years Bachelor Degree or Master Degree from any
discipline are eligible for 1 Year MDS Program.
d. Application form is available from 01 November, 2017 to 30 November’ 2017.
e. Last date of submission: 03 December 2017
f. Application form and necessary instructions are available on the website
http://www.iu.ac.bd. Application Form may also be collected from the Office
of the Department of Politics & Pubic Administration, (from 9.00 am to 4.30
pm in working days and Friday also) and submit it to ‘The Coordinator, MDS
(Evening Program), Department of Politics of & Pubic Administration,
Islamic University, Kushtia either personally or by post in office work days
and Friday only.
g. Enclose attested photo copy of all documents (Certificates/Testimonials, Mark Sheets) and three recent passport size and two stamp size photographs along with application form.
h. Application processing fee is Taka 1000/= must be deposited with Deposit
Slip (from Agrani Bank, Islamic University Branch, Kushtia only) or in the
form of Bank Draft (from any branch of Agrani Bank only) in favor of the
“Coordinator, MDS Evening Program, Department of Politics & Public
Administration , Islamic University, Kushtia in S.B. Account No. 9300,

i. Admit Card may be collected by showing the counter foil of the pay slip or bank
draft from the Office of the Coordinator, MDS Evening Program, Department of
Politics and Public Administration, Islamic University, Kushtia. Those who will
submit application form by post may collect their admit card from the same
office half an hour on or before of the admission Test prior to the acceptance of
the application form and bank draft.

Tuition fees and other costing

MDS is a self-finance programme. The entire cost of the programme will be managed
from the students' tuition fees and other costing. Total tuition fees and other costs are as follows:
