Once a year, Master Builders in the mid-west region look forward to showcasing their best new homes, alterations and commercial projects to the public. That time of year is once again upon us.

Pride in the job is reflected in every entry in our Master Builders Bankwest Building Excellence Awards for the Mid-west region. Like any elite competition, these awards provide the builders with a barometer to determine the finalists and premiers for the season. They are the building industry’s equivalent of the Academy Awards.

The awards are open to all builders and are judged by an independent panel of builders and focus solely on the quality of workmanship and construction excellence. As you can imagine, the margin separating some entries is very fine, as in the eyes of the builders, each of their projects is a “winner”.

The real winners, of course, are the clients because each year the builders strive to do better and make various improvements to their projects.

This year entries were received from Jurien Bay, Port Denison, Kalbarri, Carnarvon as well as Geraldton.

Builders who consistently win Master Builders Awards demonstrate their credentials through building excellence and have reason to be proud of their

reputation within the industry.

In addition to special sponsors’ awards this year’s entries included the following categories:

A new award introduced this year will recognize the best year 11 or 12 students undertaking the new building and construction trades pathway or building maintenance qualification. In addition to our apprentice awards, it is great to celebrate the potential of our next generation of builders.

Once again, the high number of entries reflects the strength of the Mid-west region. The abundance of land continues to attract young families

to build their dream homes in a great location renowned for a healthy lifestyle. Small businesses are also displaying confidence in the region through their investment decisions.

The best home from the Geraldton / Midwest region will compete with the best homes from the Kimberley Pilbara, Goldfields – Esperance, Bunbury / South West and Albany / Great Southern regions for the Best Country Home Award. The builder who wins this award can proudly claim that they have built the top home in regional Western Australia. This will be presented on 21 February in Perth.

To recognize the exquisite skills of tradespersons, separate sponsors’ Awards are presented for most of the building trades. These individual awards recognise that any successful building project is the culmination of a strong team effort.

Designer Sandover Pinder ArchitectsThis state-of-the-art Dual Purpose Facility was engineered to

withstand the severe cyclonic conditions of the Northwest region and subsequently has been rated for post disaster function. The building is HD galvanized, with steel structure framing and is designed to tolerate substantial wind pressures and projectile impact. The project incorporated the construction of a 10 bed sobering-up centre, providing day and night treatment services for people in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia with alcohol and drug problems that is the first of its kind in WA. CPD Group worked closely with local suppliers, contractors and engineers in

ensuring the project was delivered on time and to BCA Level 4 specifications.This state of the art facility was designed to withstand severe cyclonic conditions, complying with Building Standards of Australia (BCA) Level 4 specifications for post disaster function. The buildings structural and framing elements have been designed to withstand wind pressures and projectile impact. The Centre will be used for counselling services for the local community who are currently experiencing drug and alcohol issues.The centre is a single storey cyclone rated building with split level roofing design, constructed out of a portal steel frame with masonry infill’s and steel partitions with a timber panelling facade. Internally the Centre has been fitted out with bespoke furniture, fixtures and fittings.

This year has certainly been a year of celebration with our branch celebrating its 50th anniversary in style, on Friday 22nd August, at our premises at 4 Walton Close Geraldton.

With more than 100 invited guests from the local and state building and construction industry it was a night of stories, laughs and celebrations. Our 50th anniversary event highlighted the extraordinary evolution of the Association since 1964.

“When the Geraldton Branch was first established we relied upon volunteers, we didn’t have a permanent office for a number of years. In 2011, we made branch history when we relocated from 82 Forrest Street to our own purpose built building display centre encompassing state of the art training rooms and meeting / hire rooms plus staff offices. This building now provides first class facilities for both our members and the Greater Geraldton community and we urge people to drop by and take a look if considering holding business meetings or corporate functions.

Awards of high recognition of longest time supporters and contributors were awarded to; Bunnings Warehouse, Geraldton Ceramic Centre, The Geraldton Guardian and Midland Brick.

The highest honour of Life Membership was awarded to Hub Mainwaring for his many years of dedication to the building and construction industry and the Master Builders Association. Hub is the 19th person in the Association’s 116 year history to receive this accolade.

Our Building Excellence Awards have certainly seen changes since the inaugural event back in 1984. Then held as a luncheon at Brigades football Club, 25 homes were entered in categories under $40,00, $40 - $60,000 and over $60,00 and there were only 6 winners.

In 1986 and 1989 came the introduction of trade awards, our trades are the lifeblood of any industry and we rate them highly, quality trades are what deter that final judging mark a winner.

Highlighted in our Midwest Building awards this year we showcase our apprentices with the prestigious Kevin Guidice Apprentice of the Year, Apprentice Encouragement Award and the newly introduced VETIS Award, seeking to acknowledge and reward three, year 11 or 12 students currently undertaking the new Building & Construction Trades Pathway) or Building Maintenance qualification.

Thank you to our judges Charlie Baggetta and Steven Peck. Charlie was aptly awarded Life Membership earlier this year for his dedication and support of the regional branches in judging their annual awards for the past 13 Years. Charlie was joined this year by Steven Peck, builder and a Master Builders Past President.

With a new look this year we hope you enjoy our newly designed Winners Lift-out by Yvette Moore and Anthony Steele from Rev Design.

25FEATURE - MAINWAIRING FOR LIFE!

One of the great things the building industry is renowned for is its colourful characters. Master Builders Director reports on one of those characters in Geraldton.

The highest honour that the Master Builders Association can bestow on a member is Life Membership. At the 50th anniversary of its Geraldton Branch recently, Master Builders conferred this honour on Hub Mainwaring.

Mr. Mainwaring arrived in Geraldton in 1950 where he completed his carpentry apprenticeship. After working as a carpenter for several local builders, Mr. Mainwaring started his own building business in 1964, trading as HF and LD Mainwaring.

Hub Mainwaring has always been a “hands on” builder who regularly wore a nail bag on the job. His first building contracts included a mezzanine floor, a new railway station and a drive-in screen in Meekatharra.

Mr. Mainwaring attended his first meeting of Master Builders Geraldton Branch in 1965 and was elected Chairman for a 2 year term from 1973-75. He has been a committed member and friend of Master Builders ever since.

HF and LD Mainwaring specialized in building affordable homes for Geraldton

residents, winning several Housing Excellence Awards along the way. Mr. Mainwaring built a fine reputation as a master builder in the Midwest region even though he twice fell off a roof he was constructing. On one occasion this resulted in two broken ankles and having to drive himself to hospital 30 minutes from where the accident happened.

Mr. Mainwaring has consistently given generously of his time to mentor other young builders and Master Builders regional staff. His cheeky sense of humour and amiable attitude has made him many friends and a popular member of our Association.

In his heyday, Mr. Mainwaring was a perfectionist when it came to workmanship and building standards. His Building Commission record is clear of any disputes or misdemeanours.

Through his life-long commitment and contribution to the building industry, he has become the perfect candidate for Life Membership of the Master Builders Association. Well done, Hub!
