1. Introduction to Studsvik

For more than 65 years we have gathered experience with nuclear techniques and services in the radiological field. Over the years we have purchased numerous companies in several countries around the world; all with different cultures in their makeup. The challenge is to gather all of these under one brand and a single identity. We are one united Studsvik. Always.

Service and Maintenance

Studsvik can reduce the volume ofmetallic waste through high-pressurecompaction at the customer’s site.

Studsvik has skilled, experienced personnel who are trained to workwith the lifting of heavy components,fuel handling and shipments.

A thorough knowledge and experience of radiology is required

to conduct maintenance in classified areas. Radiation levels must

be registered and controlled and measures taken to minimize

occupational exposure.

Decontamination and Chemical CleaningAll nuclear facilities have contaminated surfacesand components that emit ionizing radiation.Studsvik provides decontamination and chemicalcleaning services for facilities and systems,based on tried and tested methods.

Repair and Mechanical Maintenance Mechanical parts in classified environmentsmust be regularly maintained and cleaned.Studsvik’s skilled team provides these servicesfor the nuclear industry and other sectors.

Health Physics and Dosimetry ServicesOperations in classified environments entailcontrols and measurements that must be per-formed by licensed health physics personnel toensure compliance with safety regulations andto monitor radiation exposure.

Studsvik provides large-scale, cost-effectivedosimetry services in addition to health physicsservices at customer sites.

Shipment Preparation and Crane OperationSpecialist training is also required to prepareshipments of radioactive material and to operate cranes. Studsvik has skilled, experienced personnel who are trained to work with the lifting of heavy components, fuel handling and shipments.

Waste Management and Registration Studsvik's personnel is trained and experiencedin the handling, sorting and classification ofnuclear waste from the nuclear power industry.

Laundry Services and Cleaning Studsvik provides laundry services for protectiveclothing and the chemical cleaning of protectiveequipment such as air filtering systems andprotective masks.

Studsvik provides dosimetry services.Individual doses are measured andregistered in a central database incompliance with regulatory require-ments.

Scrapped large components present a challenge since, due to their size, the disposal of whole components in a repository is usually very expensive and complicated. Since the 1990’s, Studsvik has been treating low-level radioactive components (over 25 metric tonnes), such as turbines, pre-heaters, moisture separators and heat-exchangers, to reduce the volume of the waste and save

storage and fi nal disposal costs.

Volume Reduction and RecyclingProviding that the waste is delivered in accordance with the Delivery Specifi cations (see last page), we expect to free-release at least 95 % of incoming weight and return a maximum of 5 % of residual secondary waste.

Secondary waste

Ingots with an activity content that does not allow clearance are returned to the customer together with residual waste (crushed slag, sorted material, cutting and blasting residues and dust from the ventilation fi lters) no later than 2 years after delivery to the Studsvik site.

Logistics

Studsvik can provide transport co-ordination and on-site assistance.

1.Large components are normally delivered by ship or trailer. Studsvik can advice on suitable transport packaging.

2.Upon arrival the component is inspec-ted. Studsvik is equipped with several tools for segmentation of large components.

3.If required, the scrap is blasted for removal of surface contamination.

4.The melting will homogenize remaining activity and allow for reliable sampling. For some nuclides the melting also works as decontamination process. Captured in the slag: U, Pu, Am. Captured in the off-gas fi lters: Cs.

5.The slag is crushed to further minimize the volume.

6.The end-product is ingots for free-release and recycling. Normally more than 95 % of incoming weight is free-released.

7.The secondary waste (slag, sorted material, cutting and blasting residues and dust from the ventilation fi lters) is packed and measured according to the customer’s requirements and returned.

Studsvik’s patented technology features a pyrolysis / steam reforming system to volume and mass reduce organic waste streams to a non-reactive waste form for efficient Disposal or On-site Storage. This entire process is referred to as Thermal Organic Reduc-tion or THORsm.

Volume and Mass Reduced Stable Waste Form

Wet Organic Waste is fed into the THORsm process system which rapidly pyrolyzes and converts the organic content of the input material to a synthesis gas which is utilized to

provide energy input into the process cycle. The resultant low density pyrolysis residue, rich in carbon and metal oxides, is further processed by steam reforming. The carbon in the residue is gasified, by superheated steam, to carbon dioxide and water. Metal oxides remain in the final product that is easily packaged in a High Integrity Container. The process has proven to achieve volume reduction factors of 3:1 to 15:1 with typical organic waste streams. The final product is a granular, inert solid, predominantly metal oxides, with captured radioactivity and a small amount of fixed, inert carbon. This is an ideal waste form for direct disposal or on-site storage (no biological growth or hydrolysis off gas potential).

The THORsm Technology is a low temperature thermal proc-ess that operates below the volatility point of cesium. The relatively low temperature prevents radioactive metals from volatizing. Approximately 99.98 % of the activity is retained in the final Reformed Residue (RR).

The logotype color

The primary color of the logotype is Studsvik red. In the first instance, the Studsvik red logo will be used against a plain white back-ground. In the second instance, a white logo is used against a Studsvik red background; there may also be a white logo against a dark grey, medium grey or Studsvik complementory colors background. In specific cases where we are not printing in four colors, we may use a black logo against a white background.

Sub-brands

Our focus is on the Studsvik brand. No matter what business area or market we are in, we should always be perceived as a united company. This means that there will be no subordinate logotypes. Products, techniques or methods should not be represented as sub-brands in any material.

Primary and Secondary colors

Red is our color. The Studsvik red color creates impact and awareness all over the world. It is a strong color for a strong brand.

Red is our primary color and must never be transparent, faded or used in tones less than 100%.

Our secondary colors are black, dark grey, medium grey and white. These give good contrast and lift the Studsvik red color.

The primary and secondary colors are used in all brand-building occasions; in our prints, our advertising, in point-of-sale and exhibition material.

Background

A grid system is a means of dividing a page so that it becomes easier to design text, pictures and illustrations within a given space.

It’s a system that allows creativity and simplifies the production of advertisements, printwork and so on. The grid system helps us to create a dynamic and living form. We can achieve the right proportions in images and text blocks which gives a professional graphic expression throughout all our marketing material.

The Grid system is flexible. It can be used for small announcements, as well as posters and banners. If 7 blocks are not enough, we can solve that with 14 or 21 block vertical columns, according to the illustration on the right.

The Core

The Core is Studsvik’s signature symbol – the design element forms the heart of our graphic identity.

The Core is created from a circle and there is the attending line that always travels outwards from the circle’s center. The circle can be used as a frame for images. We use the red line as a base, on which we place the headline.

We adjust the core to adapt to different situations and different communication levels. The round form gives us a softer impression that makes us a little more interesting but also different in a complicated world.

In all diagrams and tables we use colors taken from our color palette. In order to create a calm, considered impression we should avoid using too many colors in the same diagram.

Feeling and character

All our printwork must be printed on premium quality paper with a high neutral white and good opacity.

The images shoud appear as natural and the paper should give good legibility and a high quality feeling. For the Swedish market we have chosen Scandia 2000 European. The paper will not fade with time and is totally chlorine-free. If you are printing in other countries, then be sure to ask for a paper that is white premium uncoated.

Recruitment advertising

Our recruitment advertising takes into regard the needs of the daily press and media, and we work with red and black on a plain white background for the best results.

To differentiate services and the different positions that are in the ad, we work with specific pictures from our various business areas (where possible). Alternatively, we will choose a more neutral advertising form if the picture is going to limit us.

We have also developed a smaller ad format that works as an eye-catcher or attention grabber. The intention in this case is only to create curiosity and to lead the reader to our homepage for more information.

It’s important that we have a common sender, content, style and disclaimer irrespective of who we are in the organisation.

Name and address information are set in 10 pt Calibri with the name in bold.

The e-mail signature should mirror the business card.

Vehicles

We have quite a few different vehicles in the company fleet. That means that our vehicle décor must be easy to identify and easy to apply to the various models. Therefore we work only with the Studsvik logotype as décor. The decal is always red and white, and is placed along the side of the vehicle.

On trucks the logotype is centered at the front doors and along the side. On company cars, the logotype is centered between the back door and the rear lights. On pick-ups with open beds, the logotype is either centered or at the back of the bed.

On the rear of the vehicles there is a logotype to the right. In the back windows of company cars the logotype is centered, and printed red on a transparent film.

Logotype on the back. Any department/unit names or personal names are to be printed/embroidered on the breast pocket or sleeve.Radiation Protection is approved as printed text on the back, provided it is under the logotype.
