In the Lenten course this year I spoke about how much I can relate to Peter, to his fears and his regular bouts of doubt yet, like Peter, Christ is really patient and tolerant with me too. He always seems to wait for me to catch up with Him, He waits for me to trust Him and often sends me signs of hope and encourage- ment. This is as important for me today as it was for Peter and the first brave disciples - many of whom were crucified or put to death by the might of Rome. I am really in awe of Peter in this week’s first reading and how he really does bear witness to Christ in the most profound of ways; to think that this was a man who, only a short time ago, denied Christ three times in one night! The two on their way to Emmaus spoke about how their hearts burned when talking to Christ, can you begin to imag- ine the atmosphere in the room when Christ appeared, invited them to touch him and even watched him eat their fish? Move forward to our world today and I find that my heart goes out to those Christians who are living in fear for their very lives and their way of living. Right across the Middle East, but particularly in Iraq and Syria, we see whole communities, ancient monasteries and our fellow Christians being persecut- ed, their buildings, traditions and history destroyed. These people are having to flee in fear and many land up as refugees whilst others are enslaved or even murdered for their belief in Christ. If I am not careful this can lead me down the path of feeling helpless or feelings of hopelessness and doubt. I often try to find how I can be challenged in the readings from the mass and this week is no different. It is so full of challenges for all of us who live in such a free and tolerant society. Our free- dom to express our Christianity and, indeed, our Catholicism is something I don’t take for granted. How do I take this with me everyday to my community, to Bury St Edmunds and to the wider world? Do the people I deal with on a day to day basis see something different in me? Am I living up to the challenges and the graces of the New Evangelisation which the bishop has asked us all to promote? These are tough questions to grapple with - but nowhere near as tough as the life that my brothers and sisters in the Middle East are living on a day to day basis. Let us all remember them in our daily prayers and devotions. With peace in The Risen Lord Alan

Sunday 19th April 2015 - 3rd Sunday of Easter - Year B

I really enjoy the readings directly after Easter; the Apostles living in fear for their lives yet finding the courage, through The Risen Lord, to eventually go out and preach the good news. In the Lenten course this year I spoke about how much I can relate to Peter, to his fears and his regular bouts of doubt yet, like Peter, Christ is really patient and tolerant with me too. He always seems to wait for me to catch up with Him, He waits for me to trust Him and often sends me signs of hope and encourage-ment. The two on their way to Emmaus spoke about how their hearts burned when talking to Christ, can you begin to imag-ine the atmosphere in the room when Christ appeared, invited them to touch him and even watched him eat their fish?

Move forward to our world today and I find that my heart goes out to those Christians who are living in fear for their very lives and their way of living. Right across the Middle East, but particularly in Iraq and Syria, we see whole communities, ancient monasteries and our fellow Christians being persecut-ed, their buildings, traditions and history destroyed. These people are having to flee in fear and many land up as refugees whilst others are enslaved or even murdered for their belief in Christ.

THE WORD OF GOD Luke 24:35-48

The disciples told their story of what had happened on the road and how they had recognised Jesus at the breaking of bread. They were still talking about this when Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, 'Peace be with you!' In a state of alarm and fright, they thought they were seeing a ghost. But he said, 'Why are you so agi-tated, and why are these doubts rising in your hearts? Look at my hands and feet; yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and see for yourselves; a ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I have.' And as he said this he showed them his hands and feet. Their joy was so great that they could not believe it, and they stood there dumbfounded; 4o he said to them, 'Have you anything here to eat?' And they offered him a piece of grilled fish, which he took and ate before their eyes.

Then he told them, 'This is what I meant when I said, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, in the Prophets and in the Psalms, has to be fulfilled.' He then opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, 'So you see how it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations, beginning from Jerusa-lem. You are witnesses to this.' REFLECTION

Before it concludes, the Gospel of Luke gives us an account of the ap-pearance of Jesus to the eleven in Jerusalem and his departure from them. The two disciples who had met Jesus on the road to Emmaus have given their report. Nevertheless, when Jesus appears, the disciples are still slow to believe. They were not gullible individuals, easily deceived. They struggle to comprehend what they are seeing.

Jesus demonstrates the reality of his risen body. Though transformed, he appears to them in bodily form. Jesus teaches them, as he taught the two disciples on the road, that the Scriptures can help them to grasp what has happened. The writings of the Law, Prophets and Psalms have been ful-filled. Israel's hopes and dreams of salvation have been realised. The

challenge of faith invites all people to embrace a new life.

The disciples are sent out as witnesses to the world. The story of the spread of the gospel begins, and still continues today. The good news of Christ Risen must be told to all, beginning from Jerusalem and extending to the ends of the earth.

Do I realise that faith is seeking to come to know the Risen Lord more fully day by day?

Do I strive for a love and deeper understanding of the Holy Scriptures?

Let us pray that the whole Church may be renewed in this Easter season.

Let us pray for the mission of the Church to the world of today
