TITHING-GOD’S PLAN FOR GIVING

June 24, 2018 — The Nativity of Saint John the

Baptist

Weekend of June 17, 2018: $ 22,994 Previous year weekend of June 18, 2017: $ 25,042

IS 49: 1-6; PS 139: 1B-3, 13-15; ACTS 13: 22-26; LK 1: 57-66, 80

Today is the Solemnity of the Nativity

of Saint John the Baptist (the Feast

Day of the birth of John the Baptist).

To say John the Baptist and Jesus

were closely related and connected is

an understatement.

Both were foretold by prophets,

especially Isaiah. The only record of

the birth of John the Baptist appears

in the Gospel of Luke and it is at the

heart of our Gospel Reading today. A

key player in this event is, of course, John the Baptist’s father

Zechariah. Zechariah was a Jewish priest, but when the

Archangel Gabriel revealed to him that he would father a child,

Zechariah refused to believe it. As a result he was rendered

speechless until John was born.

Zechariah had total trust in the Lord, however. Although it was

traditional at that time to name the first son after the father, he

and Elizabeth had been told that they were to name him John.

As reported in the Gospel, Elizabeth said “He will be called John.”

The family protested at which time Zechariah wrote “His name is

John.” When he did that, Zechariah could speak once more. He

did not say “should be”; he said “is.”

The trust shown by Zechariah is an example to us that we must

trust in God, not just when it is convenient, but all the time.

Those of advanced generations know who Lawrence Welk was.

Born and raised Catholic, Welk practiced his faith throughout his

life. He once said, “Never trust anyone completely but God. Love

people, but put your full trust only in God.”

Congratulations to Father Rozman, who was just appointed Dean of the Cumberland/Perry Deanery by Bishop Ronald Gainer. His term is effective immediately and ends on August 31, 2020. He will be one of ten Deans representing their respective Deaneries serving in an advisory capacity to the Bishop. Additionally, each Dean is expected to visit all of the parishes within their Deanery and inspect their Sacramental Registries and Mass Intention Records.

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH MECHANICSBURG, PA June 24, 2018 P ARISH TRANSFORMATION:

“Take and Eat, Take and Drink” In July, the month dedicated to the Precious Blood of Jesus, we will resume ministering

the Cup of Precious Blood at all weekend Masses.

We believe that we receive the entire Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord Jesus whenever we receive either just the host or just drink from the cup. At the Last Supper Jesus invited us not only to “Take and eat” but to “Take and drink.” He meant for us to participate as fully as possible in this Sacred Meal. And so, it is appropriate that we offer this option to all who gather here for our weekend worship.

Again, it is an option for you to receive either just the Host, or both the Host and Precious Blood. For those who fear the amount of gluten even in the low-gluten Hosts that we offer, it would be appropriate for you to receive just the Precious Blood during Holy Communion.

You are reminded that when approaching the Eucharist, please make a reverential bow, and when the minister of Communion says either “The Body of Christ” or “The Blood of Christ” take the Host either in your hand or on your tongue, and the Blood of Christ by fully receiving the cup, taking a modest sip, and returning the cup to the minister. Our Extraordinary Ministers have been instructed to wipe the lip of the cup where you just drank from, and turning the cup so that no one is always drinking immediately from the same spot. As always, if you are ill, please refrain from drinking from the Cup.

By both eating and drinking, we are taking advantage of the full expression of the Sacred Meal that is offered for us. At the same time, your own personal preferences are respected regarding whether or not you want to receive both species. Children under the drinking age are asked to discuss this with their parents, who will let you know if

you are permitted to receive from the Cup. Another question that came my way regarding the Rite of Communion is: when is it appropriate for the congregation to be seated after Communion? There is no specific instruction given in the Roman Missal, but perhaps this is sufficient: It is not inappropriate for the assembly to take a seat once the Tabernacle doors are closed. This signifies the end of the distribution of Holy Communion. One does not have to wait until all the clergy are seated in order to sit after Holy Communion has been distributed. At the same time, it is appropriate for you to remain kneeling and continue to give your thanksgiving to God for the blessings you receive, especially the blessing of the Holy Eucharist. And for those of us with older knees, it is appropriate if your health condition requires you not to kneel during the Mass.

When you return to your pew after receiving the Lord Jesus into your heart, it is always appropriate to offer your prayers of thanksgiving with the rest of the gathered community. This can be done as you sing the Communion hymn, and as you allow the quiet time after Communion to be a time of personal prayer. Hopefully, receiving Holy Communion is always a time of grace for our own personal transformation as we then go forth from this assembly to “announce the Gospel with our lives.”

The wild what?! That’s right… the Wild Goose! It is a term the ancient Celts had for the Holy Spirit. And if you allow him, the Wild Goose will lead you on an adventure greater than you can imagine. The Spirit will lead you to a place of mercy, healing, peace, and presence. The Holy Spirit has been given to us not as a possession to be tamed or controlled, but rather as a Person that will lead us to the Heart of God.

The Wild Goose series will help you experience a deeper relationship with the Person of the Holy Spirit, and as you come to experience God’s presence and power this very same Spirit will transform you and bring you freedom.

Saint Joseph Parish is happy to host several episodes of the Wild Goose series this summer. Each will consist of prayer, a video presentation, and small group discussion. No registration is necessary...feel free to drop in any dates you’re available. If you can’t attend sessions in person, we encourage you to watch them on FORMED.

Automated Giving Option: Summer is here and so are

vacations!!! Here is an easy option for you to remember your parish tithe

while you are out and about enjoying all of God’s wonderful and beautiful

creations!!! Some families have opted to set up a “bill payer”

system. This is where you can request an automatic payment from

your financial institution, to be sent directly to our church, at your

requested date of the month and the amount you choose. This is not as

“electronic” as we had previously, but the best news of all, is that this

service, for almost all people, is free to both the donor and the

parish. Thank you for your continued support of the parish as we

continue the mission of Our Lord and His Church, all year long. If you

have any questions, please contact the parish Finance Manager at

717-766-9433 or email: [email protected].

Calling all Saint Joseph School Supporters and Business Owners!! Help transform the future for Saint Joseph School students by participating in corporate giving through Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program. EITC benefits Saint Joseph School students by providing them with financial aid and the opportunity to receive an outstanding Catholic education that they otherwise may not have been able to afford. Your participation means that you will be rerouting your tax dollars to benefit education. Eligible businesses can receive a tax credit equal to 90% of your contribution for a two-year commitment, and a 75% credit for a one-year commitment. Your contribution also qualifies as a charitable contribution which reduces the business’s net income for state and federal taxes, therefore saving the business money. This program is a win, win! Saint Joseph School continues to see an increase in our enrollment and demand for our educational programs. As our school grows and more families enroll, the need for financial aid increases and continues to exceed available funds. Support from businesses is essential in continuing to make Catholic education affordable and available to all families. For more information, please contact Amanda Koerner at [email protected] or 717-766-2564. There is no cost to apply and applications must be submitted on July 2, 2018.
