Second Sunday in Ordinary Time John 1: 29-34 Isaiah, Paul and John the Baptist were each called by God for a special purpose. Isaiah tells us of being called to reach out first to the exiled people of Israel and then to all nations. Paul tells the Corinthians that he was called to be an apostle. John was called to make Jesus known by baptizing with water. Now it is our turn to listen for God’s call. Then we can respond, as we do in today’s psalm, “Here I am, Lord; I come to do you will.” Masses for the Week Saturday, 18 Jan Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary 9:00 am Intention Available 5:00 pm Eileen T. ROSARY FOR PEACE

Every Wednesday at 4:30 pm the Rosary is being offered for our brothers and sisters being persecuted for their faith, for our special intentions, for friends in need of healing and for our family and friends.

THE SIGN OF PEACE - COLD/FLU SEASON

For some people, the Sign of Peace is a wonderful opportunity to express their love and sense of community with handshakes, kisses and hugs. But with cold and flu season upon us, it is certainly acceptable to nod, wave or speak a greeting of peace. The important thing to remember is that Christ is present in our midst and to acknowledge that presence in one another.

Please take home a copy of this year’s beautiful Parish Calendar, courtesy of Hogan’s Funeral Home, which are placed at the entrances of the church.

SAINT OF THE MONTH St. Paul (c. A.D. 5-67)

THE CONVERSION OF ST. PAUL

A figure watches from the shadows as a group of Christians gathers to pray together in one of their homes. He silently waits for his opportunity, and when he sees it, he emerges from the darkness, breaks into the home, and arrests them all.

It’s hard to imagine that such a zealous enemy could embrace these people, much less their faith. But that’s exactly what we celebrate today-the conversion of St. Paul the apostle!

Paul’s story can encourage us greatly as we come to the end of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. It seems that everywhere we look in the Church, we find division: doctrinal disputes, personality conflicts, liturgical disagreements, even conflicts over how to serve the poor. The challenges

cans go so deep that we’re tempted to accept the status quo of division rather than engage in the hard work of reconciliation.

But Paul’s story shows us that Jesus can intervene in even the most challenging situation. Yes, he saw Paul’s hatred and enmity, but he also saw his zeal and devotion. Rather than condemn for his neg-ative traits, the Lord redirected his positive traits, turning Paul into a living proclamation of the Gospel to the whole world!

As you think about unity, you may feel like you’re in better shape than Paul was. After all, you aren’t going around arresting people you disagree with. But you can probably identify more subtle atti-tudes that stand in the way of unity: maybe the way a fellow parishioner prays makes you feel uncom-fortable. Or maybe you are quick to join in negative comments about that church down the street. It may not seem like a big deal, but even small things can have a big impact. So let’s all work for reconcil-iation by starting with ourselves. Let’s pray for the day when we can live together as one family!

“Jesus, you long for unity more than I can imagine. Give me your desire that

All may be one, and help me do all I can to make it happen.”

St. Paul is one of our faith’s most important saints. Half of the New Testament (the letters, or epistles, of Paul) were written by Paul or one of his followers. Paul, whose original name was Saul, was born in what is now present-day Turkey. He was a Roman citizen and a Pharisee, as well as the son of a Pharisee. He spent his early life persecuting and jailing Christians. His conversion on the road to Damascus heralded everything from a change of name to an entire change of life for him. He began traveling throughout the countryside teaching people about Jesus and starting many churches. He wrote letters to those new churches that we hear in the Scripture readings at Mass.

IN HIS HONOR attend Mass on Saturday Jan. 25, the feast day of the Conversion of St. Paul and listen closely to the second reading.
