THE NATIVITY OF
ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST
JUNE 24, 2018
Is 49:1-6; Acts 13:22-26; Lk l:57-66, 80
Today is the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the
Baptist (the Feast Day of the Birth of John the Baptist). To
say John the Baptist and Jesus were closely related and con-
nected is an understatement.
Both were foretold by prophets, especially Isaiah.
The only record of the birth of John the Baptist appears in the
Gospel of Luke and it is at the heart of our Gospel reading
today. A key player in this event is, of course, John the Bap-
tist’s father, Zechariah.. Zechariah was a Jewish priest, but
when the Archangel Gabriel revealed to him that he would
father a child, Zechariah refused to believe it. As a result he
was rendered speechless until John was born.
Zechariah had total trust in the Lord, however. Alt-
hough it was traditional at the time to name the first son after
the father, he and Elizabeth had been told that they were to
name him John. As reported in the Gospel, Elizabeth said,
“He will be called John.” the family protested at which time
Zechariah wrote, “His name is John.” When he did that, Zech-
ariah could speak once more. He did not say “Should be;” he
said, “is.”
The trust shows by Zechariah is an example to us that
we must trust God, not just when it is convenient, but all the
time. Those of advanced generations know who Lawrence
Weld was. Born and raised Catholic, Welk practiced his faith
throughout his life. He once said, “Never trust anyone com-
pletely but God. Love people, but put your full trust only in
God.”

RESPECT LIFE… —TAKE ACTION: Oppose Late-Term Abortion Expan-
sion While late-term abortion expansion was not included
in the enacted state budget, and the Senate Health Committee
recently defeated a stand-alone bill, new efforts are underway
by abortion advocates to try to accomplish the same goals
through hostile amendments. The language put forth by the
advocates would eliminate New York’s restrictions on late-
term abortion, empower non-doctors to perform the procedure,
and remove protections against unwanted or coerced abor-
tions. Urge your State Senator to stand strong against late-
term abortion expansion in any form! Take action today!
—OPPOSE DOCTOR-ASISTED SUICIDE On Septem-
ber 7, 2017, the NY State Court of Appeals ruled unanimously
that there is no Constitutional right to assisted suicide in our
state constitution. The judges said there are legitimate and
important reasons for maintaining a ban on the practice.
While this is a tremendous victory for life, it will not stop the
proponents of physician-assisted suicide from pushing their
agenda with the Legislature in 2018. Please let your Senate
and Assembly representatives know that you strongly oppose
the legalization of assisted suicide, and urge them to vote
“NO” should the bill come before them for a vote. Take ac-
tion today! (Respect Life Office—Dioc. of RVC)

TIME, TALENT & TREASURE
This Week’s Stewardship of Time and Talent
In gratitude for God’s gifts of time and talent to use, we grate-
fully salute our OLP School Board.
Stewardship Thought for the Week
St. Paul reminds us in the second reading that “John heralded
His (Jesus’) coming by proclaiming a baptism of repentance to
all the people of Israel.” How faithful are we to our baptismal
promises?

YOU CAN MAKE
A DIFFERENCE ... Just a reminder, we still have food
certificates available for our local supermar-
kets. Food certificates are the same as gift certificates, only
they are for the supermarkets. We have them for Key Food,
King Kullen, Best Market, Stop & Shop, Cross Island Fruits
and CVS. Since you have to eat and feed your family, why
not help your parish at the same time? It’s an even exchange.
If you give us $100, we give you $100 in food certificates.
They actually come in denominations from $5 up to $100.
Spend whatever you wish. In turn, the supermarket will give
us a 5% rebate.
We have approximately 2,500 families in our parish.
Can you imagine, if each family in our parish used these cer-
tificates on a regular basis to do their food shopping, what the
revenue could be? Our parish will receive 5% of the total
amount of certificates you use. They don’t cost you anything
more than what you would have spent at the store.
You can get them at the Rectory, Monday through
Friday from 9:30AM to 4:30PM and 6PM to 9PM. On Satur-
day from 9:30M to 5:00PM and on Sundays, before or after
you go to Mass from 9AM to 1PM. When purchasing them
from the Rectory, you must pay by check only. They are also
available during school hours at OLP School, which will ac-
cept cash or check.
