PROCLAIM THE RISEN CHRIST

On Easter morning every-thing—the spring weather, the flowers, birds and butter-flies, the people around us in their finery, the beautiful lit-urgy and music—everything seems to bear witness that Jesus Christ is risen today! Like the eyewitness accounts in today’s scriptures, the glorious and joyful life all around us helps us to believe the good news of the Resurrection and sing “Alleluia!” In the scriptures today we hear from Peter and Paul and John. All three speak with conviction about witnessing the resurrected Christ. John’s Gospel account includes Mary of Magdala, who also was privileged to witness the Resurrection and tell others the good news. On this glorious Easter Sunday can we ourselves give eyewitness accounts that Jesus Christ is risen today, alive and active in our lives? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

The other Jesus

Easter Sunday. The most important day in the Christian religion. The day that Jesus showed that he truly was God by arising from the dead. That concept is vital to our belief, the essential building block of our faith. Jesus was God.

But have you ever thought about the other Jesus? The human Jesus?

We tend to concentrate on the fact that Jesus was God, bringing us the direct word from the Father, seeing every-thing with complete knowledge and understanding. No temptations, no doubts, no fears, just perfection come to earth. He knew the answers before there were questions. At least that’s what we tend to think, but if you read the Bible carefully, you find that Jesus was very much a human being.

We know almost nothing about the first thirty years of his life. He was not the center of attention that he would later become. Why did it take 30 years to finally start teaching? Perhaps we see the answer, and the first signs of his human side, in Matthew as he begins his ministry. He goes into the desert to sort out what he should do. After forty days of fast-ing and prayer, he is hungry.

That is when he is first tempted to change stones into bread. This is a very human thought when we are hungry. He rejects it because he has realized that he has been giv-en his ability to work miracles for others, not himself. God gives all different gifts, and we must realize that same thing. Use them for others, not just yourself.

Next the devil takes him to a parapet of the temple and tells him to throw himself down to see if God’s angels will catch him. This shows his doubt about whether God really wants him to do what his prayers have led him to. He rejects this temptation because we all must live with faith, not cer-tainty. Once again, a human trait.

The third temptation is when the devil takes him to a high mountain and shows him all the wealth and magnificence of the kingdoms of the world, promising them all to him if he will worship the things of this earth, the devil. Once again, a temptation we all have, the lure of power and wealth. Jesus rejects it, for those don’t matter, only serving God matters.

He continues to show his human aspects when he cries upon hearing that his friend Lazarus has died. He is again human when he gets angry and drives the money changers from the temple. Then, during the agony in the garden, he begins to be “grieved and distressed” and asks God to “let this cup pass from me”. Finally, he shows desolation and fear on the cross as he cries, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

Jesus spent the first thirty years of life becoming human. He learned to love children and obey his parents. He went to the synagogue to pray and saw the trials and tribulations of all the people around him. In other words, he learned and experienced everything that we all do. It took thirty years before he was ready to use that knowledge to help guide us to God.

And so we come to this day, the day of resurrection. Even now, he keeps a human form. He has become one of us, and he brings that knowledge back to God. God now understands us.

After all, He was one of us. ~DN

Please join us in our 4th Annual 3 -Day Prayer Devotion (Triduum) hon-oring SAN PEDRO CALUNGSOD on Thursday, April 12 - 6:30PM, Fri-day, April 13 – 6:30PM, and Satur-day, April 14 -3:15PM with the 4:00 mass immediately following at Our Lady of Mercy Church. Saint Pedro Calungsod is the second Filipino saint and was canonized in

October 2012. He was a teenage native of the Visayas region in the Philippines and served as a missionary lay catechist along with the Spanish Jesuit missionary Diego Luis San Vitores in Guam. He preached Christianity to the Chamorro people through catechism, baptizing in-fants, children and adults at the risk of being persecuted and was eventually murdered at the age of 17. Through San Pedro and San Vitores’ efforts, many native Chamorros converted to Roman Catholicism. Saint Pedro is the patron of the youth, altar boys, mi-grants, catechists, and the Overseas Filipino Workers.

The crown of thorns has become a crown of life.
