Massena is a lovely town. Rambunctiousat times, like anywhere, but lovely

nonetheless—which is why I wonderWhy would anyone here badmouth

it as if imprisoned by it? Uh…this isAmerica, isn’t it? ‘Land of the Free,

Home of the Brave!’ Ahhhh…brave, right. Free to leave or stay. I’m incredulous

of any adult who has the audacity toact like he doesn’t have the freedom to leave the communityhe claims to detest. Fact is: it can be quite frightening in otherareas of the nation. Harsh. Unforgiving. Not at all Massena.Perhaps, this ominous realization can lead a person to feeltrapped between a rock and a hard place. Absolutely. I get it.

Yes, it’s hard here. But it’s hard everywhere. Always has been;always will be. There are certain constants on our planet, likethe earth's North magnetic pole for instance, and themagnetic field. Life here on earth is somewhere betweenheaven and hell. Through all its polarization and polarity, there are forces opposing one another as a matter of sheernature. Not unlike the magnetic North arrow on a compass, the pull that ultimately determines one’s direction in lifecomes from the very direction one’s attitude leans towards. This typically determines the direction to which one’s life isheaded, heaven or hell; and we go in that direction, of ourown choosing, whether aware or not. Massena is beautifuland perfect. As with any location on the map, one merelyneeds to get one’s bearings and stay on course. Of coursethat’s not easy; the terrain and climate, notwithstanding.

It’s not easy elsewhere in the world either—and not everyoneis nice or tolerant. Social ladders in larger cities, for instance, can be vicious to scale—sometimes worse than scaling theAdirondacks. Stumble, fall, or be knocked down, and it willnot be easy to get back up. Cities are saturated with violence, brutalization & desensitization, prejudice, denial, corruption, hunger, homelessness, fatigue, and desolate hopelessness.

In Austin, Texas, I was giving away around $100/week tohomeless people. Why? Because I could not resist the urge tohelp the poor souls I’d encounter on the streets as I commutedthrough my daily life, day in/day out. I was incapable of turningaway, even as I was gradually going broke. The times I did turnaway, I could not sleep well at night. One day, my brotherRoland and I were out and about in his big Texas-Size pickuptruck. I said “Pull over so I can give money to that deathly-illlooking dude” who was carrying a sign which read “Will Workfor FOOD”, to which Roland retorted “Oh C’mon! He just wantsthe money to buy drugs, dude! Don’t give him your money.”

“Roland, pull over and tell him to jump in the truck bed, andwe’ll take him to that Burger King over there to buy himsome food!” I insisted. Roland grumbled that this was stupid, but to prove his argument, did what I asked. At Burger King, the look in this poor American citizen’s eyes, and the lifecoming back into his face overwhelmed with joy and filledwith gratitude, was all the proof Roland needed, to knowthat he really meant what his sign read. That poor man’sdelight is an image seared forever in my memory. The feelingwas amazing. Happiness. Almost makes you teary eyed.

Years later, when I came to Massena, I had arrived with mybattery low on happiness. I did not appreciate when peoplehere would steal any of my remaining happiness, especiallysince happiness is a basic necessity of life. We need it tosurvive. Yet, I would not be upset if someone stole somethingfrom me such as food, milk, a jacket, etc. Of that, my heartwould ache for the perpetrator, and I’d pray for the poor soul. So, what’s the difference?—these are all basic necessities forliving—things people need! Hence, I had come to grips withthe error in my thinking & judging, and was thankful that atleast I was healthy enough and wise enough to regeneratemy own happiness. That’s as easy as it is for one to regenerateone’s car battery simply by driving the vehicle! One doesn’tneed to steal another’s happiness; one simply needs toregenerate their own! So...like Samuel L. Jackson said in TheNegotiator (1998), “You want my blood? Take my blood!” I sayhere: You want my happiness? Take my happiness! I live.

May the Massena News become a reservoir of happiness. And that is today’s news in the Massena News: Get Happy!

The Massena News continually strives to recognize those who have foughttenaciously against hellacious odds even when it’s more expedient andsafe not to; and especially recognizes those who have overcome allobstacles and have achieved victory in their struggle—which is, herein, recognized as a commendable feat to have achieved. T & T’s Famigliadeserves our respect and admiration for their hard work and dedicationin establishing itself here, and our adoration for its unique taste. T & T’sFamiglia could’ve been established anywhere else than Massena, but theenergy behind this vision is for Massena alone, and is deeply rooted in apassion inspired by Roy Portolese, father of brothers Tom & Sam, who ranthe 284 Club on East Orvis Street from 1945 to 1977 with his brother Sal,and whose recipes have been passed on to T & T’s Famiglia. The restaurantbusiness is in the Portolese family heritage. Through hard work anddetermination, Sam has been beating the odds, and the business remainsstrong, continually providing a superior dining experience to ourcommunity and to our Canadian friends visiting the lovely Massena.

I get the impression that confronting tough challenges is nothing new to Mr.Sam Portolese, Manager of T & T’s Famiglia, who’s spearheading the business. You see, my dear reader, a ‘tough challenge’ is not an opposing force to thoseintent on achieving victory—it is a friend!—and, as with any friendship, itdoesn’t hide itself from others. It’s there, present, prevalent, standing strong, high spirited—easy to see and recognize for what it is: a winning spirit. Truechampionship. Moreover, like a true champion, Mr. Sam Portolese is notswayed by petty distraction or clique politics. He knows people are out theresaying things that are not necessarily true on websites where one can speakanonymously and not have to stand behind one’s words.

Let’s face it, we live in a world where most of what’s being said out there issheer conjecture. One of the core values behind the Massena News is toput a focus on fundamental truths, because a fundamental truth is, well, always fundamentally accurate. Take for instance “Judge a tree by its fruit”.The fruit doesn’t lie. It tells a truth we all can rely on. A grape is a grape. Now,the grapevine, on the other hand, is, well, a matter of semantics, whereintruth becomes malleable by those who choose to disingenuously misreadthe facts and spread their interpretation of it as gospel. We have to becareful of that, just saying! Because, what we have here is a man who has, upon returning to Massena, worked very hard in dedicating his life to beingthere for his mom & dad, and making a successful establishment upon theendeavors of T & T’s Famiglia, despite all the hearsay as to why he’s returnedand everything that’s happened in his life while away.

Listen to all those sirens out there in the streets. Who’s son or daughter didsomething wrong this time? Truth is we were all born with good intentions(fundamentally), but somewhere along the way, at one time or another, many of us have acted upon bad intentions. We’re not all fortunate enoughto have never fallen into temptation. Mr. Sam Portolese had been awayfrom Massena for a very long time, and he said that anyone who has anyquestions about his past should just ask him. He’s an open book about it.“People that don't know me, they just know about me, and now I'm here, and everyone's saying 'Well he did this, or he did that’,” he said, adding that“I've always been honest about my past to everyone. I'm not denyinganything from my past, my past is always going to be there, but that doesn'tmean, that doesn't make you any different of a person because you'vegone through trials and tribulations, it means: Where are you now.And I'm here in Massena, building a beautiful restaurant.”

Dealing with all that local rhetoric has put an added strain on Sam’s family. His mother & father commends him for all the hard work he has done sincehe’s been back and how well he’s handled it all. They’re proud of him. And,yes, it’s been tough. Sam’s mother had a heart attack 2 years ago, and his fatheris now legally blind from a 20 year long battle with macular degeneration. Butthe family has a strong heart. Mr. Sam Portolese said he said to his father “Dad,all the negative stuff I've had to deal with just makes me want to do the onlything I can do to prove myself here: is build a beautiful, successful place.”

Therein is the fundamental truth: Judge a tree by its fruit. “Each tree isrecognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes,or grapes from briers.” Luke 6:44 (NIV)

Mr. Sam Portolese says he doesn’t take all the credit for the success of T &T’s Famiglia. He says it’s been a great team effort, that he's only as good asthose he puts around him. He’s very proud of his workforce, and feels he hasa great team now. He’s especially thankful to Rick Mitchel and Giggsy, whohave continually stood by him helping out every step of the way here sincereturning from a lucrative career of the life he left behind in Florida.

I hope everyone had ahappy Thanksgiving Day.

Ahhhhh…that Great American Holiday. Itsgreatness is not about all the delicious foodwe get to eat. It’s about giving thanks. In giving thanks, we express ourappreciation and love. I expressedthanks for my wife, my children, all myfamily, Massena, USA, Canada (my wife’snation), God, and for everyone andeverything in my life. In giving thanks, weexpress love & appreciation.

Massena is being kept alive by the peopleexpressing their love for it—I believe that100%. Those who love it but aren’texpressing it are just in the way, hindering it. And those who despise itand express that sentiment are killing it.Expressing love breathes life into it;whereas, expressing the opposite, sucksthe life right out of it. Those who expressnothing are just in the way, stealing the airothers need to breathe. Sorry if this soundsharsh—Tough love—just sharing what Ibelieve, in hopes that if you feel the same, you too will spread this message as apositive influence over others.

You see, my dear reader, there is somethingabout the mere act of expressing love andappreciation that promotes growth. It ispowerful, uplifting, invigorating, rejuvenating.I believe it creates a culture conducive tosuccess—which could be, fundamentally, why our nation had risen from its infancy tosuperpower in such a short time. Have youever seen a championship team that is notcontinually praising one another? Of coursenot—there’s no such thing. Champions praisethemselves. Winners love their team and areexceptionally proud of themselves, whetherthey win or lose a tournament! Losers, on theother hand, despise themselves and justabout everything with everyone on theirteam. In every challenge a defeatist faces, inhis mind he’s already lost because he blameseveryone and everything but himself, beforeeven stepping up to the plate. Sad.

In seeing the two opposite ends of thesuccess spectrum, there’s only one side ofthe field I choose to be on! That’s the sidewhere I say to everyone around me, You areGREAT! You are an outstanding individual. You are Stellar. And I keep saying that, because

I’m proud of myself, and because I love myselfand my life with a passion, and I couldn’t dothat without you—not like this, anyway! We are on the same team, you see!We are Massena, and we areawesome! People here arefriggin great! Anyone here who

can’t see that istoo busy

judging himselfand looking at

others through his ownperceived failed

expectations, and needsyour encouragement.

Did you know thatThomas Edison tried andfailed nearly 2,000 times while

developing the incandescentlight bulb? When asked aboutthis, he replied “I didn’t fail. Ifound out 2,000 ways not to make a lightbulb, but I only needed to find one way to

make it work.”

I know many ways how not to raise acommunity—and that’s by as manydifferent ways as you can imagine one

could talk trash about it and belittle it, andtalk about all the bad things about it. Butthat’s not me—hey, I don’t talk trash aboutmy own home! Goodness Gracious—whodoes that?! I live here. I take pride in it!Everyone, in fact, living here should be proudof it, speaking highly of it and lifting it upwith their words, praising and encouragingone another, being thankful, and beingproud of Massena—not just on ThanksgivingDay, but every day! Say this as often as youcan: “I love Massena.”

You may’ve heard that “it takes a wholevillage to raise a child” (African proverb). Ouresteemed mayor, James Hidy, has continuallysought to instill pride and other importantvalues essential to the development ofyouths, the culture of our community, andultimately, our future. But it’s up to you, andme, and every citizen in the village. We areresponsible!—by how we carry ourselvesand for our actions or inactions (an inactionis an action. When someone is on fire, thosewho do nothing are committing a horribleaction!). Indeed, it takes a whole village: you,me, and every responsible individual in it.

Building a Bully Free ZoneEvery morning it's a fight to get Jeff on the bus. Hismother assumes he just doesn't like school, andwill do anything to avoid the work.

What she doesn't know, is that Jeff has beentargeted as easy prey by a few boys on the bus.For him, it's more than being teased andlaughed at. It's a down-right frighteningexperience.

Bullying is a national epidemic. Research shows one inthree students is bullied at least once a month. What starts off as kid'splay can turn into life-long damage. News reports have coveredstories from teen suicide to Columbine in addressing this issue. Yet,bullying remains an ongoing problem. The harsh reality is thatbullying happens everywhere, and can even happen in the home.

Elementary and middle school aged children spend most of theirwaking hours with other kids, both classmates and siblings. As allparents know, not every moment will be harmonious. Tiffs andsquabbles are part of developing social interactions. Young childrenare primarily self-centered and may not be aware that their wordsand actions can affect others negatively. Some kids strike out andtreat others poorly because they are being bullied elsewhere. Whena child feels humiliated and powerless, they try to regain dignitywhere the can.

Also, consider what role models children as exposed to. Sometelevision shows and video games have mean-spirited charactersthat impressionable youngsters may imitate. Though some teasingmay be part of social development, it becomes a problem when thechild targeted cannot defend themselves, and they are targetedagain and again. So, how do parents help and when should theyintervene?

Jeff''s mom assumed that his account of the "mean" kids on the buswas nothing more than typical behavior he needed to work outhimself. Psychologists report that not taking a child's complaintseriously is one of the mistakes parents often make. It's hard enoughfor a child to express feeling hurt, rejected or afraid. When they feelunheard and unsupported at home, they don't know where to turn.On the other hand, blowing a situation out of proportion and

overreacting is not healthy for a child either. Parents are the role modelsfor personal power and self-esteem. Make sure your child sees that thesituation or rejection is not the end of the world. Lastly, it's important tonot immediately place blame. Take time to listen to your child before askinginsensitive questions like, "What did you do to make him hit you?"

Parents can help prevent bullying in many ways. Building your child's self-esteem is a great start. When a child feels good about themselves they areless affected by the opinions of others. Parents can also avoid comparingone sibling to another. They can point out their children's strengths (eventheir unique qualities) and give them lots of praise. Role-play is also avaluable tool in helping a child solve social problems. Even kids withdisabilities can benefit by being taught how to properly respond to beingteased or left out.

Without positive reinforcement, a bully will move on to a better target. Finally, become your child's advocate. Help them to identify bullyingbehavior and how to deter it. This will empower them to label the actionand know how to respond.

The National Education Association (NEA) has launched its Bully Free:It Starts With Me campaign asking parents and other caring adults to takea stand against bullying. According to NEA "just one caring adult can makeall the difference in the life of a bullied student."For more information on taking the pledge go to their website(www.nea.org/bullyfree).

The American Academy of Pediatrics (www.aap.org) has a wealth ofinformation on what to teach your child when they are the victim, whenyour child is a bystander, and when your child is the bully.

Massena Central School District's website has valuable links withinformation about Bully Prevention (www.stopbullying.gov), includingwebisodes for kids to help them recognize bullying behavior and knowwhat to do, and a Special Edition on Bullying at School and Online(www.education.com/topic/school-bullying-teasing).

Prebiotics (fructooligosaccharides and inulin)are complex carbohydrates, as well as a fiberthat supports the good bacteria. Foods suchas onions, asparagus, garlic, bananas, chicory, dandelion and artichokes are some of thegood sources of preboitics.

PROBIOTICS are live organisms or live cultures that provide the goodbacteria and help balance the flora in the digestive tract. The goodbacteria benefits all systems of the body. As some would call it “thegood bugs”. The strains that begin with “L” such as lactobacillus casei, lactobacillus rhamnosus, lactobacillus bulgaricus, or lactobacillusacidophilus are prevalent in the small intestine.

The strains that begin with “B” such as bifdobacterium lactis, bifidobacterium bifdum, bifdobacterium lactis, bifidobacteriumlongum, are prevalent in the large intestine. With up to 14 differentlive cultures available, I have only listed some of them.Prebiotics and probiotics provide us with many benefits, such asregularity, balancing the ph of the body, nutrient absorption, aids inthe removal excess hormones, helping the immune system to fightagainst virus and wrong bacteria , skin conditions, stomachdiscomfort, h-pylori bacteria, yeast infections, and bladder infections.
