Many health and wellbeing problems we see here stem from excessive long-term stress, lack of physical activity and poor diets. Massage therapies help with circulation, combatting stress symptoms, relieving pain, improving immune responses and improving mood. Massages included as standard in any of our package can be exchanged for others on our treatment lists, and the guest account is adjusted accordingly.

Hoogland Signature Heavenly Earth Massage 80 min R 735 The Hoogland Earth Massage has been specifically designed for and is unique to Hoogland. It incorporates the elements of fire (hot stone), earth (wood instruments rolled over the body for a unique experience, air (special infusion of aromas to stimulate a sense of wellbeing and nurturing) & water (rhythmical and continuous movements to mimic the ocean)

Full Body Massage 50 min R 475 This is a completely hands-on treatment of the whole body. The main function is to improve blood and lymph circulation as well as reducing stress and tension in the body. This massage covers the back, neck, legs, arms, stomach and decolté area.

Back and Neck Massage or Indian Head Massage 25 min R 350 The technique used is the same as the full body massage except the therapist focuses on the back and neck area, or back, neck and head, reducing stress and tension in the scalp, head, shoulders and neck.

75 min R 685 The purpose of this massage is to get to the deeper seated muscles. It can be painful. It is a slow deep massage, working on the deeper layers of muscles. This massage is mostly suitable for athletes or people with severe tension.

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils from plants for their therapeutic properties and can aid digestion, detoxing, de-stressing, poor circulation and relaxation. It is a flowing massage making use of light, relaxing movements. We make use of pure essential oils that are blended for each specific guest in a carrier oil.

The essential oils take about 1 – 2 hours to be effective, therefore steaming after the treatment is not recommended.

Some oils are not recommended during pregnancy, please consult with the therapist prior to massage.

Gua-Sha Facial Massage 25 min R 340 Gua sha is a long-used technique originally practiced in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It uses smooth cold stones, to massage the face with both short and long strokes and varying amounts of pressure for detoxification, lymphatic drainage, and also pain relief.

Back and Neck 45min R 445 Hot stone massage is a specialty massage where the therapist uses smooth, heated stones as an extension of their own hands, or by placing them on the body. The heat can be both deeply relaxing and help warm up tight muscles so the therapist can work more deeply, more quickly.

Reflexology 40 min R 435 This holistic therapy uses the feet as a map of the whole body. By manipulating, and applying pressure to certain parts of the feet, the whole body can be‘re-tuned’ and brought back into balance. It relieves stress and tension, improves circulation thus increasing the efficiency of all organs and cells.

Hoogland’s health and wellbeing philosophy is that we only offer treatments that are medically and scientifically proven to help. This means that we also understand the power of placebo and therefore offer a variety of complementary therapies.

We do offer various COMPLEMENTARY treatments, not “Alternatives”. The best of both worlds in other words. If you have a genuine medical concern, then medical treatment must be the first consideration and complementary therapies in support.

Our medical staff are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), while some of our complementary health professionals are registered with the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA).

Treatments that fall under either HPCSA or AHPCSA can be claimed back from most medical aids. Please request the correct invoice from reception. These treatments are marked with an * on the price list.

Some of the complementary therapists are not registered with regulatory bodies which means that their invoices are not refunded by medical aids. This does not make their knowledge and experience in their fields any less valuable. We offer these treatments with pride.

We recommend that guests do these as soon as possible after arrival to get a clear indication of the impact their lifestyle has on their health. A follow-up of all of these at the end of the stay at Hoogland can give a clear indication of improvements brought about by their stay at Hoogland. Relaxing Retreat and Pamper Packages do not include any of the consultations in the following pages, but anything can be added as needed.

For your Body

From the Lab

Our on-site laboratory has a large selection of blood and urine tests available. Some tests can be done by the nurse on duty and she can provide basic feedback. If there is a need for feedback from a medical doctor, additional charges will apply based on how much time is spent in consultation.

Certain tests are only done by the doctors and feedback is provided in consultation. The charges associated with feedback on each individual test depends on the time spent. Results can have large variations and as our doctors treat people in a whole-body environment, rather than individual symptoms, there is no accurate way of quantifying the charge for feedback on these tests.

Certain lab tests cannot be done in isolation in a cost-effective way and are bundled together. Certain tests will only be performed if a specific abnormality is detected in another test. As these are often done during the process of the lab run, the extra charges for these tests are not always discussed with patients before-hand, but the potential reason and costs for these optional tests are clearly indicated on the price lists.

Any tests deemed essential our on-site laboratory cannot perform will be sent to a commercial laboratory only after consultation with the guests. Turn-around time on this is usually very quick but depends on the nature of the tests.

Hoogland does not currently have a permanent physiotherapist but can arrange for a physiotherapist to come in when needed.

Chiropractor

Chiropractic improves how the nervous system controls the muscles. It does this through the chiropractic adjustments which makes sure the joint movement is supple and flexible.

The number of days can be adapted to any number of days to suit guests’ individual needs. Additional treatments may be added, and the treatments included as standard may be exchanged for any other therapy you may prefer, and the balance will just be added to your final account.

Prices are based on single guests in single rooms, and guests sharing in double or twin rooms.

7 day Holistic Detox Package Prof David A Bender points out in an article of the British Society of Biology’s journal, The Biologist, we already have an excellent system for getting rid of potentially harmful substances — it is called the human body. All we need to do, is to support the human body naturally and it will do the work it is designed to do. Even if you have put your body and mind through the abuse of modern life, it can bounce back quickly and effectively, unless there are major medical reasons preventing this.

This is what makes Hoogland so successful at providing a truly holistic detox programme. We have a comprehensive, caring medical team to ensure that there are no underlying medical factors and a wide range of supportive staff and facilities to provide the ideal environment for improved mental and physical vitality.

Detox is actually a bit of a misnomer. A toxin is a poison, and the only time we have poisons is if we get them in somehow, either through eating it or by being bitten, stung or injected with poison in another way. What we are really referring to are wastes, and sometimes an excess build-up of wastes due to poor circulation, lack of exercise, bad eating habits, constipation, excess stress or other factors. We will keep with the 'layman's term' of 'detox' as it is a term made popular by many spas and publications.

Many detox regimes include a number of therapies which are either untested, or have been proved to have more potential side effects than benefits. Test and Consultation Details

Clinical Examination Details Clinical Examinations are done by one of our medical doctors or by request, a homoeopath. Clinical examinations are top to toe physical health assessment including taking a medical history and giving advice on how to best use the Hoogland services to address any health concerns.

The clinical examination assesses health of a guest’s entire body including Nervous system Organs Reflexes Eyes, Ears and Throat Skin General health and concerns.

Physical Wellbeing Assessment This comprehensive physical wellbeing assessment is offered by a Biokineticist of other trained professional. Should you want to use this assessment for your Discovery Vitality Health Assessment, please let the sister on duty know to book it with the appropriate staff member.

The Assessment includes: Body Composition Balance and Proprioception Fitness and muscle strength Posture and myofascial triggers Flexibility and Dexterity Stress Levels

This assessment gives an excellent indication of how to use facilities at Hoogland to improve your physical wellbeing.

Blood tests Our on-site laboratory is equipped to accurately and quickly process a large range of blood tests. Blood is typically drawn before 8am, ideally fasting. Results are available from around 10am on the same day and a complete report and detailed feedback is given during the course of the day. These tests are hugely beneficial in many ways, even if it is just to confirm that all systems are normal.

These tests include: Blood sedimentation rate – an indication of inflammatory protein in the serum Blood Count

o Red Blood Cells o Red Cell Distribution Width – gives and indication of the age of the red blood cells o Haemoglobin o Haematocrit o White Blood Cells

Accommodation: Hoogland provides single rooms for guests visiting on their own, and double or twin rooms for guests who prefer to share. Upgrade rates may apply for single guests in double rooms or guests wishing to stay in a Wild Orchid room.

Mountain Karee are single rooms on the south of the building. They are comfortable rooms with a ¾ bed, table and chair plus recliner. The huge sliding windows overlook a natural forest and the southern mountain.

Bush Willow are rooms on the north of the building. They are large comfortable rooms with either a queen size and ¾ bed, or only a queen size bed. They have a dresser, table and chairs and two recliners. Huge sliding doors either provide direct access to the garden or spectacular views of the lawns and hills on the north of the building. Single guests who prefer a Bush Willow room are charged R250 single surcharge.

Wild Orchid are rooms with spectacular tall ceilings on the south of the building. They have separate lounges and a queen size bed in a spacious bedroom. Windows covering the entire southern wall of the lounge has great views of the natural forest and mountain on the south of the building. Upgrade fee to the Wild Orchid is R 500 per night.
