What is academic excellence? At MCLA, it’s rich, diverse
classes and dynamic academic programs led by faculty who
love to teach. It’s the freedom to learn both inside and outside
the classroom, and the chance to explore fresh perspectives.
It’s all the knowledge, experience, and support you need to
chart your course and begin your journey.
06
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAM
The Undergraduate Research Program encompasses independent scholarly
activity by students in the arts, humanities, and sciences. Driven by the many
opportunities for interaction between students and faculty, the program
supports students with independent study opportunities in many disciplines,
small research/travel grants, the MCLA Scholar program, and a dynamic annual
campus-wide conference for presenting their work.
Beyond the campus, MCLA is a proud member of COPLAC, the Council of
Public Liberal Arts Colleges. MCLA students join with peers from other
colleges in the Northeast to present at the regional COPLAC Undergraduate
Research Conference.
HONORS PROGRAM
Founded to provide a wider range of learning opportunities for highly
motivated students, the Honors Program at MCLA offers a variety of courses
with the depth and interdisciplinary content sought by those students who
seek added academic challenges. The Program promotes a strong sense
of community between students and faculty, and builds upon their shared
interests. By bringing together strong students to study in concert with
challenging faculty, the Program fosters a community of scholars dedicated to
the exchange of innovative ideas and personal knowledge.
LEAD ACADEMY
(Leadership in Education, Action, and Development)
Prepare to distinguish yourself as a campus leader through
service, workshops and teamwork. Get a head start on your
MCLA experience and learn how to be an effective leader.
STEM ACADEMY
First-year students interested in science, technology, math,
and psychology will be introduced to cutting-edge careers and
research opportunities while building connections with other
students and faculty.
Experience Academic Excellence
INTERNSHIPS
In an increasingly competitive job market, internships provide valuable
work experience that demonstrates your career plans to future employers.
Advanced knowledge and applied work experience enable job candidates
to have the necessary edge over the competition. The knowledge gained
through internships help MCLA students make informed decisions about
employment opportunities before starting a career path.

SUCCES SP R E P A R E F O R
Build your future. Today’s economy requires global
perspective, and many of our students choose to study
abroad or participate in a travel course. At MCLA, there are
many ways to explore new cultures to enhance your academic
experience, personal growth, and professional development –
leading to powerful results.
09
NATIONAL STUDENT EXCHANGE (NSE)
NSE is a program for undergraduate exchange within the United
States, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Canada.
Instead of crossing oceans, NSE students cross state, regional,
provincial, and cultural borders. Participating in NSE can be
exhilarating, intellectually enriching, and one of the most significant
experiences of your undergraduate education.
TRAVEL COURSES
Our travel courses meet regularly on campus before and following
travel. They include an academic experience of reading, research,
and reporting. The courses typically are junior-level, carry three
upper-level credits toward graduation, and are an excellent
opportunity to combine travel and study.
STUDY ABROAD
Travel abroad is a gateway to personal growth and learning first-hand
about other people and other places. What better way to prepare
for globalization than by experiencing it in college? Globalization
of communication, commerce, arts, and culture is revolutionizing
societies everywhere. Future success in business, politics, or your
chosen career will increasingly depend not only on professional
expertise, but on personal familiarity with clients, customers, and
associates from different cultures. Your learning as an MCLA student
studying in Europe, Asia, or the Americas will prepare you to meet
tomorrow’s challenges. It may also change your life today.

discover your passion and build relationships that last a lifetime.

an on-campus resident or a commuter, you’ll find that our
modern and well-equipped academic buildings, comfortable

At MCLA, the overall goal of the housing program is to set
the stage for learning by providing a living environment that
is conducive to academic pursuits, personal growth, and the
development of lifelong friendships. Members of the Residential
Programs & Services (RPS) staff work collectively to ensure
each residence area is in good condition, safe, supportive,
and enriched with a wide array of out-of-classroom learning
opportunities. Most importantly, we help each resident find
a comfortable “home away from home,” which we believe is
critical to a positive college experience. On-campus housing is
guaranteed for four years in one of our three residence areas:
BERKSHIRE TOWERS
• Suite-style
• Single and double rooms

“MCLA provided me with an important
foundation. It was a place where I thrived
and got more attention than at the
private school I transferred from. I came
in wanting to study pre-med and wanted
to be able to get all the requirements
needed for a biology degree. MCLA
worked with me to make that happen.

Our chemistry major covers basic principles and theories in analytical, organic, inorganic, and
physical chemistry. Students will apply chemical principles through problem solving and laboratory
experimentation, as well as demonstrate competence in the use of various laboratory instruments.
Chemistry often is referred to as the “central” science. In that role, chemistry connects physics and
mathematics with biology, medicine, and environmental sciences. In conjunction with the Education
Department, the new major’s curriculum has been devised so that a student wishing to major in
chemistry with a concentration in education can accomplish both goals in four years.
Chemistry is a field of study that places a premium on analysis, critical thinking, and reasoning. It
also will challenge students to apply critical thinking and problem solving to everyday challenges
that they will encounter in both the classroom and laboratories. It is this critical thinking
application that is inherent to chemistry that has applications to many other fields of study.
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN CHEMISTRY OFFERS
OUTCOMES
Chemistry majors at MCLA will learn synthetic skills, laboratory
techniques, technical report comprehension, laboratory
instrumentation, and chemical safety; all of which are critical
to success in the chemical field. Students who graduate

“The willingness of the chemistry faculty to sit
down and have one-on-one conversations with
you about anything – chemistry or general
advice – made for a great atmosphere to work
in. This fostered a great interest in chemistry
for me, and the availability of more advanced
courses and advice on what to study were of
great help in graduate school. Without the
close-knit community found in the MCLA’s
chemistry department, I would not have found
myself studying for a Ph.D. in chemistry.”

From the day MCLA was founded in 1894 as North Adams Normal School, this institution
has been dedicated to educating future teachers. Those who pursue an education degree
will find that our liberal arts tradition serves them well in today’s challenging world. They
become critical thinkers who pass along their expertise to those they educate. MCLA
education graduates are highly valued teachers in Berkshire County, as well as many schools
across the state and in the neighboring states of New York and Vermont, and across the
nation. For most states, candidates with a Massachusetts teaching license need only pass
the appropriate state teacher tests in order to be fully certified there.
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN EDUCATION OFFERS
• Teacher licensure in early childhood, elementary, middle school, and secondary
education
• The benefit from working closely with a network of mentor teachers who
are associated with the College
• Placement in classrooms across Berkshire County for student teaching
• A liberal arts education that prepares students to work with the new Common Core
curriculum, which is based on a liberal arts approach
• A B.A./MEd 4+1 program designed for students to earn both a Masters of
Education and a Massachusetts Initial license to teach
TEACHER LICENSURE
Students who pursue teacher licensure will declare a major in a liberal arts discipline with
education as their second major or concentration. Students must maintain a 2.8 GPA, no
grade below a C in license program courses, and pass all parts of the Massachusetts Tests
for Educator Licensure (MTEL) in order to be admitted to the professional semester (student
teaching). Massachusetts licensure is reciprocal with 48 states, including our neighboring
states in New York, Connecticut, Vermont, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Hampshire,
and Maine. Teacher licensure candidates must meet additional criteria in order to pursue
Massachusetts teacher licensure once enrolled at MCLA.

Our classes are taught by dedicated faculty, not teaching assistants; class sizes for introductory
classes are 20-25, and for upper-level classes, 10-20. Department faculty focus primarily on
teaching, but they also are active scholars who publish their research and present at national
and international conferences. This shared approach to teaching and research results in
widespread opportunities for our students to pursue engaging experiences outside the
classroom, such as internships and travel courses. Every year, history majors present their
work at the College’s Undergraduate Research Conference and at regional conferences. In the
last few years, our students traveled to present their projects at the National Conference on
Undergraduate Research (NCUR).
Responding to the need to make clear connections between a liberal arts education and finding
a job after graduation, we have developed a new course, “Career and ePortfolio Workshop.”
Graduating seniors complete their ePortfolio, demonstrating their academic capabilities,
and then link those skills with post-college options for careers and graduate school. Working
with faculty, Career Services, and alumni, students craft resumes, cover letters, and graduate
application essays.

the program challenges students to bring a rigorous, critical, and constructive attitude
to every aspect of their lives. These transferable skills and habits not only complement
students’ future careers and scholarly pursuits, but more importantly equip them for
lives marked by intellectual curiosity and engagement.
Philosophy is a humanistic discipline that explores the most fundamental questions
of human existence, value, life, and knowledge. Students develop skills in analytical
and synthetic thinking, communicate clearly, and write in a clear and effective manner.
Philosophy deepens and unifies other academic disciplines. It accomplishes this through
systematic exercise of historical, logical, literary, scientific, abstract, and practical thinking,
and is in that way inseparable from a true liberal arts education. Courses provide skills that
complement almost any career and enhance every aspect of the life choices that students
make. We offer an optional concentration in Law, Ethics, and Society.
All faculty hold Ph.Ds in the field and have published scholarly books on topics such as
ancient philosophy, philosophy of education, ethics, theories of justice, and corporate
social responsibility. Members of the Philosophy faculty have won both national and
international awards.
BACHELOR OF ARTS IN PHILOSOPHY OFFERS

MCLA offers students the choice of a B.A. or a B.S. in physics. Students in either program
work closely with faculty and their peers to learn about all aspects of physics. In addition
to developing problem-solving skills and experimental techniques, our students achieve
excellence in communication through writing and speaking. These skills make our
graduates ideal candidates for graduate school in physics or engineering, as well as in a
competitive job market.
The curriculum provides a rigorous education that prepares students for graduate work
in physics. Faculty specialties include condensed matter, low temperature, optics,
and elementary particle physics. Flexibility in the curriculum and individual projects
accommodate students who want to go into other fields, such as engineering, education,
and business. The curriculum emphasizes problem solving, but it also emphasizes the place
of physics in society.

MCLA’s Political Science & Public Policy (PSPP) major combines rigorous academics with
practical applications of skills and knowledge. Our full-time faculty offer courses in American
politics, comparative politics, and international relations. Additionally, a variety of experts and
practitioners teach in areas such as law, the policy process, and social movements. Students
can participate in international experiences such as the North American Model United Nations
in Toronto; travel courses in Europe, Asia, and the United States; and semesters abroad in
Australia, Europe, and Latin America.
Advisors work closely with students to develop programs of classes and experiences tailored to
each student’s interests and career aspirations. We have a growing pre-law advising program
and an active campus Political Science Club. These and other organizations promote discussion,
political participation, and general political awareness. PSPP students intern with local
governments and elected officials, law firms, national policy organizations, and federal agencies
such as the U.S. Marshals Service. Many PSPP students also are active with and hold leadership
positions in the MCLA Student Government Association.
Our students interact with a range of policy makers and opinion leaders who visit campus. Recent
speakers include (then Senator) U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, President Obama’s campaign
manager David Plouffe, Hotel Rwanda hero Paul Rusesabagina, environmental activist Vandana
Shiva, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, author and journalist Bob Woodward, New York
Times columnist David Brooks, former Senator George Mitchell, former U.N. Ambassador Andrew
Young, writer and activist Gloria Steinem, and immigration activist Jose Antonio Vargas.
