ST. JOSEPH PARISH

Fr Jim’s Jottings Dear parishioners, this weekend we celebrate the final push for our Capital Campaign. I am so proud of the effort we have all made. Today everyone will be asked to fill out a pledge form. Some will have already committed to the Campaign and will indicate that on their pledge form. Others will indicate to what extent they can help us. We’ll collect the pledge forms before the end of Mass. Obviously, we’ll do some follow-up over the next few weeks, reaching out to those we still have not heard from. I cannot thank you enough for participating in a challenging campaign. Many have shown outstanding generosity in helping St Joe’s and the Diocese. May our Lord continue to bless our great parish!!!

Sacrament of Reconciliation

Will you receive God’s mercy in making a confession of your sins during Advent? Sincerity and Sorrow are among the best gifts we can offer our Lord. They are at the heart of a good confession. Besides our regularly scheduled time of Reconciliation on Saturday at 9:00am, we will have a Communal Penance Service on Thursday, Dec 12 (6:30pm) at St Mary’s and on Monday, Dec 16 (6:30pm) at St Joe’s. In addition to that, there will be private confessions on Wed., Dec 11 & 18 from 6pm-7pm.

Calendar Raffle

Thanks, everyone, for your help in making our Calendar Raffle a success. Many of you picked up your three calendars and have already returned them. Some have also asked for extra calendars to be used as Christmas gifts. We have from now till the end of the year to buy/sell these calendars. Thanks again for your participation.

Thanks to Brettschneider Trettin-Nickel Funeral Home

The parish has been offered the gift of a liturgical calendar from our supporters at Brettschneider Trettin-Nickel Funeral Home. They have picked up the cost of these calendars for 2020. Hopefully every parish family will put this calendar in a prominent place in your home. It will remind us of saints’ feast days as well as the holydays of our church year.

Congratulations to Our Weekly Calendar Raffle Winners

Attention Families with Small Children Please consider participating in the Children's Christmas Liturgy December 24 at 6:30 pm. Anyone who cannot attend but would like to participate, please contact Julie Bertram at 920-255-2696 or email [email protected].

Penny War is ON! We began our Penny War last weekend. You will see the containers for each age group on the radiators in back of church. Pictured above are Kaden and Adam Bleck who are running this effort. Proceeds of this will go towards our “one by One” Catholic Campaign. Each weekend before Christmas we invite you to bring your coins and paper money and drop into the appropriate container. Thanks, everyone.

Thank you!!!

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Miron Construction. They provided the trailer and driver for our 2019 St. Joe’s Float, “A Baby Changes Everything” which took part in the Appleton Christmas Parade on November 26. Their generosity, along with volunteer support, helped make our float awesome.

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK World, church, and local events continue to challenge our faith. This is all the more reason to continue to come together and find encouragement and hope in God’s word, sacraments, and our faith community. We are people of hope who are called to persevere, even

in the midst of confusion and darkness, as we wait for what is to come. We are asked to repent, especially from our tendency to fall into doubt and despair. We are asked to repent and place our trust in Isaiah’s words that God’s world of innocence will be restored. We need to hear John the Baptist’s words today more than ever: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is a hand!” Rather than being disappointed by what human beings and world cannot give, let us commit anew to what God can and will provide. ©LPi

WWDWWD (why we do what we do) At Mass we say, "Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts…” where does it come from, and what on earth does "Hosanna" mean?

When Jesus entered Jerusalem for the Passover, the crowds cheered him with the cry of Hosanna. It was an acclamation of praise and gladness of his arrival. We can certainly sing the “Holy, Holy, Holy” in anticipation of Christ’s arrival in the consecration of the bread and wine.

one by One” Campaign (Penny War) Our parishioner “Penny War” has begun! All the proceeds will go towards our “one by One” Catholic Campaign. Kaden Bleck, our youth representative on the Parish Council, will oversee this on a weekly basis.

There are buckets in back of church representing four age groups: Young Pups, Millennials, Gen Xs, & Baby Boomers. Put pennies or paper money in the bucket for your age group. Or, you may put silver money in other buckets to reduce their total. This Penny War will run throughout Advent. Which age group do you think will end up winning?

“My St. Joseph Stories”: James & Johanna Margetta Family Our journey to St. Joseph Church started with looking for St Mary's. We had been traveling through Appleton for a family Christmas some years back. We were sitting in a restaurant on Christmas Eve. Before we left we and asked our hostess if she new a Catholic Church near by. She said St. Mary's was very close and told us how to get there. The service was very nice, but it was the choir that night on Christmas Eve that was so beautiful. We didn't forget the name of the church. Well, seven years later in 2007, we moved to Appleton and we said we are going to join St. Mary's. Yes, we remembered the name but not the address. We looked for the church and even tried one church in our first week in Appleton but didn't feel like we were all that welcome. The following week was Mother's Day and our son and his family had come to visit us in our new home. We said will try this church we found in town together. I remember our young grandchildren wanted to sit up front and Father Larry was greeting people before the service and he stopped to speak to us. He asked where we were from and we told him. Father Larry said “well we even let Yoopers at St. Joseph” and then he winked at us. He finished the service with a joke, something we had never experience before in church. It was like saying “we are friends and family here please join us”. That is what we did. We joined St Joseph Church. Father Larry had welcomed us but Father Jim has been teaching us why were are Catholic and why we love St. Joseph Church. Oh by the way, we did find St. Mary's our second month in Appleton. It must be true—you don't see the forest for the trees. No, I think we just found home. James & Johanna Margetta

Cindy Nygard Morales Family I have been a member of St. Joe's for 15 years. I had belonged to another parish in Appleton but over the years it changed and I wasn't feeling fulfilled any more so I went church shopping. A friend suggested I give St. Joe's a try and I loved it the first time I came. I felt like I had come home.

Over the years St. Joe's has become another family to me. Through Twinning, CRHP, Alpha, Lectoring, and various events I got to know more and more people. When I came to Mass, I always saw someone I knew and the people I didn't know were so friendly I soon got to know them, too.

When my husband Tom developed terminal cancer, my church family was there with encouraging words, prayers, Mass Intentions, meals, and so much more. When I had to struggle with being alone, my church family was there to hold me up until I could stand on my own again. And my St. Joe's church family was there to celebrate with me when they noticed I had changed my name this April. Over the course of the past two years they had noticed the man that came to church with me every Sunday and they welcomed him as they had once welcomed me.

This is what Jesus asks us to do. "Be God to others" and that is what St. Joe's has always done for me. Cindy (Nygard) Morales -age 66 yrs.

Jean Spilker Family There have been Spilker parishioners here at St. Joseph Church since the 1870s when my husband, Jerry’s grandfather Alois Spilker came with his brother Frank. They were in the early twenties and came from Lugde, Westphalia, Germany. When my husband retired, we moved back to Appleton. At that time I told Jerry if he wished to join St. Joe’s it was okay with me — I would follow. My ancestry is Irish and we knew of the early history in Appleton of the German/Irish relationships. The Capuchin priests have always been special and the parish is friendly. I’m happy and grateful to be here. And thanks for reading my historical account. Jean Spilker -age 81 yrs.

“one by One Prayer” Dear God, during this season of Advent, we prepare our minds and hearts for the coming of Christ through prayer, good deeds, and the gift of ourselves. As Christ becomes a part of our life let us bring hope, love, and charity to all that we meet. Let this become a real-ization for each and every one of us. Amen
