Misery Loves Company (2 Chr 36: 18-16,19-23 Jn 3: 14-21)

Recall on Ash Wednesday when we had the ashes placed on our heads we heard the words, “Repent and believe in the Gos-pels.” This is our “Lentin send-off Language.”

Today we hear one of the most known versus in our bible, John 3:15 “That whoever believes in Him may have eternal life.” To have eternal life is our mission, it is everything we hope for.

We are being reminded over and over to “Believe”! In our Old Testament reading we hear a good example of what happens to those the fall away. The reading from 2nd Chronicles deals with the time following the harsh rule of King Solomon. The people that turned away from their faith to worship Pagan gods did not fare well. The northern kingdom was taken into exile by the Assyrians and never returned. The southern kingdom went into exile to Babylonia for 70 years and only their children re-turned.

Despite repeated warnings from God’s messengers, the proph-ets, few of the leaders listened. Of the 20 kings in the southern kingdom, 12 were classified as bad.

It would take a king from outside the Holly Land, the King of Persia to listen to the lord and fulfill the plan to return the Jew-ish people and to fund the rebuilding of the Temple.

Turning away from God has been repeated throughout the old testament and continues today.

In the new covenant that Jesus brought, He calls on us again to “Believe.” Jesus promises us if we believe we will not parish and will have eternal life.

I am sure most of you have heard the phrase, “Misery loves company.”

There is perhaps much truth to this phrase since people that commit evil have turned away from God and often will want others to join them. We see this in Noah’s generation: only his family was righteous and was spared in the great flood. It seems that cultures often fall into a trap believing that if most people doing something, it makes it right.

We have so many examples of God patiently waiting for the next generation to fulfill His plan.

Moses and the Jewish people wondered in the Desert for 40 years after they failed to listen to God. Only the children of the next generation entered the promise land.

As mentioned earlier, only the children of the Babylonian ex-iles returned to the promise land.

Misery loves company is a dangerous philosophy. Today we see many examples of this:

The cancel culture: those who object to someone’s comments, beliefs, or behaviors are denounced online. Taken to an ex-treme, it’s like excommunicating someone from the communi-ty. (Continuation on the next page)

Recordemos el Miércoles de Ceniza, cuando nos colocaron las cenizas en la cabeza, oímos las palabras: "Arrepiéntete y cree en los Evangelios". Este es nuestro "Lenguaje de despedida de Cuaresma". Hoy escuchamos uno de los más conocidos versus en nuestra Biblia, Juan 3:15 "Para que quien crea en Él tenga vida eterna." Tener vida eterna es nuestra misión, es todo lo que esperamos. ¡Nos recuerdan una y una vez más a "Creer"! En nuestra lec-tura del Antiguo Testamento escuchamos un buen ejemplo de lo que les sucede a los que se caen. La lectura de 2nd Chroni-cles trata sobre el tiempo que sigue al duro gobierno del rey Salomón. A las personas que se apartó de su fe para adorar a los dioses paganos no les fue bien. El reino del norte fue exili-ado por los asirios y nunca regresó. El reino sureño se exilió a Babilonia durante 70 años y sólo sus hijos regresaron. A pesar de las repetidas advertencias de los mensajeros de Di-os, los profetas, pocos de los líderes escucharon. De los 20 reyes del reino sureño, 12 fueron clasificados como malos. Se necesitaría un rey de fuera de la Tierra holly, el rey de Per-sia para escuchar al señor y cumplir el plan de devolver al pueblo judío y financiar la reconstrucción del Templo. Tal vez haya mucha verdad en esta frase, ya que las personas que cometen el mal se han alejado de Dios y a menudo querrán que otros se unan a ellos. Vemos esto en la generación de Noé: sólo su familia era recta y se salvó del gran diluvio. Parece que las culturas a menudo caen en una trampa creyendo que si la mayoría de la gente hace algo, lo hace bien. Tenemos tantos ejemplos de Dios esperando pacientemente a que la próxima generación cumpla Su plan. Moisés y el pueblo judío se preguntaron en el Desierto durante 40 años después de que no escucharon a Dios. Sólo los hijos de la próxima generación entraron en la tierra prometida. Como se mencionó anteriormente, sólo los hijos de los exili-ados babilonios regresaron a la tierra prometida. La miseria ama la compañía es una filosofía peligrosa. Hoy vemos muchos ejemplos de esto: La cultura cancel: aquellos que se oponen a los comentarios, creencias o comportamientos de alguien son denunciados en línea. (Continuation of Dcn. Ray’s Message) People who abuse drugs may encourage you to join them. People that do not attend mass every week, maybe more apt to tell others, “It is OK, say a prayer.”

Some one that has had an abortion my say to a woman facing an unex-pected pregnancy, “it is fine, I did it and it is not that big of a deal.”

We all should be careful who we ask for advice. If we go to the wrong people we could end going down the path of misery too.

Our Faith and teaching are the key for all of us to stay the course. To avoid joining in with what is popular but rather joining in with what is right. We hear the keys to staying strong during lent:

Have an active prayer life with God, so you may know him and he may know you. Pray for each other. Pray the Rosary, our Queen moth-er is there to intercede for us.

Repent, hate the sins you may have and ask God to help you to stop them

Know your Bible and believe in the Good News from Christ. The more you know about the salvation plan, the more you will know about Gods love for you

May Gods love abound in your life knowing that he loves you as much as he loves his Son Jesus.

Las personas que abusan de las drogas pueden animarte a unirte a ellas.

Personas que no asisten a misa cada semana, tal vez más propensas a de-cirles a los demás: "Está bien, di una oración".

Alguien que ha tenido un aborto mi opinión a una mujer que se enfrenta a un embarazo inesperado, "está bien, lo hice y no es tan importante".

Todos debemos tener cuidado de a quién pedimos consejo. Si vamos a la gente equivocada podríamos terminar yendo por el camino de la miseria también.

Nuestra fe y nuestra enseñanza son la clave para que todos quedemos el curso. Para evitar unirse a lo que es popular, sino más bien unirse a lo que es correcto. Escuchamos las claves para mantenernos fuertes durante la cuaresma:

Ten una vida de oración activa con Dios, para que lo conozcas y él te conozca. Oren el uno por el otro. Rezad el Rosario, nuestra Reina madre está allí para interceder por nosotros.

Arrepiéntete, odia los pecados que puedas tener y pídele a Dios que te ayude a detenerlos

Conoce tu Biblia y cree en las Buenas Noticias de Cristo. Cuanto más sepas sobre el plan de salvación, más sabrás sobre el amor de los dioses por ti

Que los dioses amen abundan en tu vida sabiendo que él te ama tanto como a su Hijo Jesús.

Mental Health Ministry Advisory Group, would like to invite those who are interested to join our Mental Health Ministry at OLMC to sign up by

calling our office at 650-366-3802. During these difficult times, we can help our brothers and sisters who are suffering from anxiety and depression by reaching out to

them. Our religious education program started their classes last Febru-ary 27 at the courtyard. The classes are intended for the sec-ond year Catechism students.

We will inform you about our upcoming plans in re-opening the registration and enrollment for the new Catechism year 2021.
