Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time God's mercy and love are available to all who call out to Him in Faith
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ! All three readings speak of the expansive and universal nature of the “Kingdom of God.” Alt-hough God set the Hebrew people apart as His chosen race, He included all nations in His plan for salvation and blessed all families of the earth in Abraham (Gn 12:1-3). By declaring through the prophet Isaiah (the first reading), “My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples,” God reveals the truth that in His eyes there is no distinction among human beings on the basis of race, caste or color. The long-expected Messianic kingdom was intended not only for the Jews but for all nations as well. Today’s responsorial psalm (Ps 67) rejects all types of religious exclusivity: “Let all the peoples praise You, O God; … For You judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon the earth, so that Your saving power may be known among all the nations.” In the second reading, Paul explains that, although the Jews were the chosen people, most of them denied the promised Messiah, and, consequently, the Gentiles received mercy through their Faith in Jesus. In the Gospel story, Jesus demonstrates that salvation was meant for the Gentiles as well as for the Jews by healing the daughter of a Gentile woman as a reward for her strong Faith. Indeed, Jesus shows that God's mercy and love are available to all who call out to Him in Faith. We need to persist in prayer with trustful confidence. Christ himself has told us to ask him for our needs: "Ask and you shall receive." Asking with fervor and perseverance proves that we have the “great Faith” and we receive what Christ wants to grant us in response to our re-quests. We must realize and remember that we do not always get exactly what we ask for, but rather, God gives us what He knows we really need, what He wants for us and what is really best for us. As Christians, we also know that our particular request may not always be for our good, or for the final good of the person for whom we are praying. When the prayer is sincere and persevering, we will always get an answer – the one which is better than what we ask for. Fr. Bao

St. Cecilia Catholic Book Club
Please join us on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 to discuss “Strangers in a
Strange Land” by Charles J. Chaput, Archbishop of Philadelphia, Chapters 7 through the end
A vivid critique of American life today and a guide to how Christians―and particularly Catholics--can live their faith vigorously, and even with hope, in a post-Christian public square. A fresh, urgent, and ultimately hopeful treatise on the state of Catholi-cism and all Christianity in the United States. Amer-ica today is different in kind, not just in degree, from the past. And this new reality is unlikely to be re-versed. The reasons include, but aren't limited to, economic changes that widen the gulf between rich and poor; problems in the content and execution of the education system; the decline of traditional reli-gious belief among young people; the shift from or-ganized religion among adults to unbelief or individ-ualized spiritualties; changes in legal theory and ero-sion in respect for civil and natural law; significant demographic shifts; profound new patterns in sexual behavior and identity; the growth of federal power and its disregard for religious rights; the growing isolation and elitism of the leadership classes; and the decline of a sustaining sense of family and com-munity. The book club will meet in a member’s home from 7 to 8:30 pm on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month. If interested or have questions, please call Kathy Long at 714 318-4678 for directions. You are welcome to Come and See!
Friday Women’s Ministry We will begin our fall session on Friday Morning Women’s Ministry on September 15 at 9:15 in the Kuper Center. The cost of the class in $20, but no one will be turned away if unable to pay. Please call Sandie Guard at (714) 838-5224 or (714) 887-3952 if you have any questions or concerns. Please join us and see how becoming a part of our ministry will enrich your journey with the Lord and with the ladies of St. Cecilia!

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT
St. Cecilia parish is a living sign of God’s saving Word. We have been called by God to foster a genuine, caring Catholic Christian community. God empowers us to be a visible sign of His Kingdom in the world. YOU…..THE PARISH NEEDS YOU TO VOLUNTEER!
Fr. Bao, Fr. Ismael and Fr. Nicolaus invite YOU to please take a moment to look at the page to your left and right to see all ministries and services we have here at St. Cecilia. Please pray and talk about it with your family and call these ministry leaders for more details. You may consider helping out only once a month, 12 times per year. There is not a lot of commitment required. Thank you so very much! God bless! See you soon!
