Dear Parishioners, There is a story of a novice monk who entered a monastery where the vow of silence limited all speaking to two words every ten years. After this novice completed his first decade, the abbot asked him: “What are the two words you would like to speak?” The monk said: “Bed … hard,” and the abbot said, “I see.” Ten years later, the monk returned to the abbot's office and was again asked the same question: “What are the two words you would like to speak?” “ Food ... stinks” said the monk.” “I see,” replied the abbot. Yet another ten years passed, and once again the abbot asked the monk the same question: “What are your two words now?” “I ... quit!” said the

monk. “Well, I can see why,” replied the abbot. “All you ever do is com-plain.” This monk had spent thirty years in the monastery, immersed in the Scriptures, listening and studying Jesus’ teaching, attending liturgies and most importantly receiving the Eucharist – eating and drinking Jesus’ body and blood – and yet somehow still missing the point of it all. His interests were not in things associated with the kingdom that Jesus speaks about, but rather in those temporal things that mattered to him. By placing his needs first, he failed to see the value of the discipline that the author of the letters to the Hebrews suggests will bring the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it. His story illustrates how our attitude, and failure to act from a place of God’s love, can dampen our awareness of it. For God’s love, kind-ness and fidelity are bursting out in everything around us. If we are to pro-claim the Good News to all the world, it begins by aligning our works and thoughts with the message of the cross, which truly proclaims the stead-fast kindness and fidelity of God. We profess this faith when we speak two words, “I believe.” Or when we affirm our belief with one word: “amen.” Today we, like the monk in the story, will eat of Christ’s body and drink his blood. Let our “AMEN” in receiving him indicate not just that we believe in who he is, but that we are committed to building our rela-tionship with him, such that we never hear the words from him, De-part from me… I do not know where you are from. A relationship built here on earth will allow us to recline [with him] at table in the kingdom of God for all eternity.

Fr. Tad

Padre Tadeo

St. Clare School is proud to partner with many organizations to give our students a variety of opportunities to serve, to encounter members of the community and to engage in the work that we are called to do: Archbishop Mitty High School – sophomores from Mitty serve as reading tutors for our primary grades and juniors and seniors lead elective courses in our middle school. Santa Clara University – America Reads tutors work with our primary teachers to engage students in the love of learn-ing; work-study students work as extended care leaders or classroom aides; students in the School of Business and School of Communications serve as mentors for project-based learning; students in primary and middle school visit the SCU Maker Lab to test out engineering and science in-novations; our after-school sports program and Jog-A-Thon use SCU facilities. Mission City Library. The library provides opportunities for our students to enjoy their selection of books as well as a space to build a love for reading. Students visit weekly and use the gazebo at the park for a variety of reflection and so-cial activities. Learning and Loving Education Center. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The wonderful diversity of life and worship among Roman Catholics of East and West is an example of God writing straight with crooked lines. The steady hand of the villainous Emperor Diocletian drew a line across Europe and Africa that split the empire in two, and for the most part determined how Christians would worship two thousand years later. Italy’s heel and the far northern city of Trieste fell on the Eastern side, and have had a form of Eastern liturgy ever since. Constantinople, which soon became the seat of the Roman Empire, became a base for Christianizing the East up to Russia and Poland. Poland was on the Eastern side, but a series of wars and medieval may-hem pushed the religious boundary back to the Ukraine, and Poland remains an outpost of the Latin Church to this day. An old rule of thumb declared that whatever religion was observed by the local prince, the people had to fol-low. This gave rise to persecution and migration as peo-ple sought toleration for their expressions of faith. In the United States, we are accustomed to peaceful collabo-ration among Christians of East and West, a situation that challenges churches that still feel the pinch of age-old division. —James Field, Copyright © J. WELCOME THE STRANGER We have become accustomed to seeing pictures in the media and stories on the news about immigrants from Latin America and refugees from Syria fleeing violence and de-struction in their own countries, trying to make their way to a safe place. We have also seen the reactions of people who want to keep them away from their countries, who fail to welcome the stranger and the helpless children. Have we forgotten Jesus’ call to comfort the homeless and the stranger? “They shall bring all your brothers and sisters from all the nations . . . to Jerusalem, my holy mountain, says the L .” In the three readings for this day, we are told that we are to welcome these strangers, to welcome the discipline of the Lord, which leads to peace, and to “strive to enter through the narrow gate” into the glory of God’s own home-land, the reign of God.

STAND AND BE COUNTED

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages,

recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism, weddings, when

asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and Confirmation Spon-

sors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contribution member.

So, are you a registered parishioner? If not please consider registering. Registration forms are available in the Parish

Office and in the Church vestibule.
