Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God January 1, 2017
THE GAZE THAT CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE
Happy New Year! We wish it all the time. But, what is the happiness that we are hoping for? It is not realistic to think that it means everything will contin-uously be perfect. Happiness is not always just a feeling, a rush or a re-sponse from having more stuff. The Church gives us this Solemnity of the Mary Mother of God on New Year’s Day to remind us that it is possible to find true happiness. In the gospel we hear a short account from St. Luke about the shepherds being lead by the angels to gaze on the Christ child. They were so overwhelmed with joy when they found him that they left praising the Lord (Lk 2: 16-21). This is true happiness. Happiness is what results when we take time to gaze upon the Lord. This 2017 we are called to be like the shepherds and even more like the Blessed Mother and constantly loose ourselves in gazing upon the Christ child. So, every time you pause to pray each day, you grow a little deeper in happiness as you gaze upon the Christ child. You can experience happiness as you get caught up in focusing on how Christ is present in the other person, rather than the things that you do not like. Happiness is always present, as you gaze upon the Lord, anytime that you celebrate one of the sacraments. Happiness abounds when you take time, like the shepherds and Mary the Mother of God, to contemplate God’s loving presence around you. This can truly be a year filled with happiness, if you take time to constantly get lost in gazing on the presence of Christ Je-sus. The more you get lost in that gaze; the more it will truly be a Happy New Year!

Stewardship Thought Today’s second reading reminds us that through Christ we
have been delivered from the old law and have become sons and daughters of God. New Year’s Day provides a per-
fect opportunity to ask ourselves the question: Does my life
reflect my gratitude for all that my loving Father has given me?
Please remember in your daily prayers the sick and
suffering of our parish family.
