Solemnity of Christ the King November 20, 2016

“Who or what REALLY rules our lives?”

After a year of praying about and reflecting on the many stories of Jesus’ life,

death and resurrection, we find ourselves on this last day of the liturgical year

looking in the mirror and asking, “who or what REALLY rules our lives?” St.

Paul in his letter to the Colossians reminds all that in and through Jesus Christ

we have been delivered from darkness, offered redemption and a forgiveness

of all sins; all of which can lead to our salvation (Col 1:12-20). But have we

seized on the thousands of opportunities in the past year to allow Jesus to be

that freeing, forgiving, merciful, challenging King of our lives? There are cer-

tainly those who have a daily routine of prayer that is a non-negotiable; Christ

is King of their lives. There are those who have a very giving heart. They feel

that the Lord is calling them to do whatever needs to be done for their family,

their church and for their country; Christ is King of their lives. There are

those who see the Lord in everything they do; Christ is King of their lives.

Yes, on this Solemnity of Christ the King we come face to face with our Lord

and we either celebrate or need to re-evaluate. We either find ourselves cele-

brating that we get it and work every day to make the Lord the center of our

lives. Or, we need to re-evaluate and see how we can make Jesus Christ a

greater King of what we do. Yes, today is a great opportunity to look within

our hearts to make sure that what we do, how we do it and when we do the

things that we do are passionately fueled by He who “REALLY rules our

lives” - Christ Jesus our King and Savior.

Jubilee Year of Mercy

November 20, 2016 Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ,

King of the Universe Jubilee Year Ends

Today Luke, evangelist and by tradi-

tion artist, sends us forth from this Jubilee Year of Mercy with an unforgettable portrait

of Christ the King. The setting for Jesus’ “royal portrait” is the cross. From this “throne,” the cruci-

fied “crown prince” welcomes by “executive pardon” the kingdom of mercy’s first citizen, a fellow criminal. The

“Good Thief” requests neither deliverance nor salvation, or

even forgiveness: “Remember me when . . .” (Luke 23:42). “Today you will be with me,” King Jesus promises, “in para-

dise.” (23:43). Paradise, even for non-believers, is an image of creation contentedly in harmony with self, fellow crea-

tures, and Creator. Today, we “good thieves” beg Jesus to

remember us. We promise to remember that, although Je-sus’ kingdom will be fulfilled only when Jesus’ returns, that

kingdom begins today in the paradise that will flower from this Jubilee Year of Mercy. We disciples, having been em-

braced unconditionally and undeservedly by Jesus’ mercy, must now go forth to embrace all others, unconditionally,

FALL ADULT FAITH FORMATION SESSIONS meets each Sunday

The Classes Between the Masses for adults will not meet this Sunday, November 20th. Class resume on Sunday, November 27 with Fr. Jo-seph sharing with us about Carmelite Spirituali-ty. The class should be both informative and inspirational. No book is required, just come and participate.

FEEL THE JOY! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Together we filled 385 Boxes of Joy and filled two large shipping boxes with sup-plies for hurricane relief in Haiti.

Ways to Celebrate Advent:

Illuminated Advent Rosary – November 27th – 1st Sunday of Advent – 5pm

Join us in the Rosary Garden as we pray the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary to mark the beginning of the Advent season, illuminating the garden as we pray. Cookies and hot chocolate will be served follow-ing in the Parish Hall. In case of inclement weather, we will pray the rosary in the Parish Hall.

Advent Movie Night Under the Stars – The Na-tivity Story (rated PG) - Sunday, December 4th at 5pm

Bring your camp chairs and snacks as we watch The Nativity Story - a chronicle of the perilous journey of Mary and Joseph, who must travel from their home in Nazareth to Bethlehem, Joseph's ancestral home, to register for a census ordered by King Herod. It is a journey of over 100 miles, through treacherous ter-rain, made much more difficult by the fact that Mary will soon give birth to the Christ Child.

We will watch the movie under the stars near the red barn. In case of inclement weather, the movie will be shown in the Parish Hall. Popcorn and beverages will be provided.

Parishioners of all ages are invited to attend both events!

Holy Communion – Temporary

Change

The General Instruction of the Roman

Missal tells us that one of the requi-sites for the celebration of Mass is ap-

propriate sacred vessels. The chalices,

ciboria, and paten that hold the bread and wine that become the Precious Body and Blood of

Christ are to be made of or gilded with a precious metal such as gold. Our sacred vessels are now showing

wear. In order to maintain appropriate respect and rev-erence for our Lord at the Eucharistic celebration, we

will be shipping our four matching chalices and one of

the matching ciboria to Wisconsin to be repaired. This process will take 3 to 4 weeks. At the weekend Masses

during that time, the Body of Christ only will be distribut-ed to the community. We Catholics believe that the

Body and Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ are really

and fully present in both species of the Eucharist. Even though we will only receive one species at Holy Com-

munion, we are still receiving the fullness of Christ.

The repair and re-plating of our sacred vessels will cost

between $2,500 and $3,000. Special donations toward this project will gladly be accepted!
