Senior Priests Retirement Fund
The second collection today is to support the retirement fund for priests. The very name and idea of a priest “retiring” often brings up questions from many people. When a priest retires he does so only from administration, but not from priesthood. A priest is a priest forever, even into eternity. He is configured to Christ the High Priest and this remains so forever.
Priests in the Diocese of Providence serve in regular capacity until the age of 70 whereby afterwards they can make their own arrangements for living. Unlike religious order priests (like Dominicans or Jesuits) diocesan priests live independently and financially. We pay taxes on our salaries throughout our lives and are urged to make plans that would ensure a place to live, etc. in retirement.
The priest receives a modest pension and collects social security, as they have paid into it during their active years. Once retired, the priest no longer receives a regular salary form his assignment but will receive remuneration (stipends) if he remains serving a parish/ministry. There is always a need to ensure they are provided for.
Here at St. Thomas More we are blessed by the continued ministry of both Msgr. John Halloran and Fr. Joe Henry who are the perfect models of what active, yet retired ministry could be like. They both remain active and even essential parts of our parish family and are a gift to all of us. We also enjoy the presence of Fr. Gerry Bierne and Fr. Charlie Mahar on occasion as they live within our parish boundaries.
I hope this collection is a time and opportunity to reflect on the long and faithful service of our retired priests. In these days of fewer priests we find in them not only faithful instruments of sacramental encounters with Jesus, but also examples of what lifelong fidelity to a vocation can be like, and the joy it gives.
Please give as generously as you can but also pray for them and in thanksgiving call to mind the encounters you have had with our retired priests. They are certainly a gift to us and an essential part of our Lord providing generously for us.
God bless them and you!
Fr. Taillon

REST IN PEACE Camille Martini
After decades of faithful service, many retired priests continue to serve where they are needed, while others require assisted living, or nursing home care. Since priests are paid a very modest wage, they cannot rely upon Social Security to make ends meet. No longer able to rely upon parishes for basic living needs, senior priests depend on support from this challenged fund. Your generosity will make a difference in the lives of many who have served faithfully for many years in ministry – some of whom continue to serve well after their ‘retirement.’ The collection is also our way of saying “thank you” for that service. At Masses on September 19 & 20, our parish will join others through-out the Diocese in a collection in support of the Senior Priest Retirement Fund. Please consider a generous donation in support of our senior priests. To learn how this fund benefits senior priests or to make an online donation, please visit www.srpriestri.com. Thank you for your support of this worthy endeavor.

Diocese of Providence Traveling Rosary Congress, October 3 - 9,
Our area will be hosting our first ever Diocesan Traveling Rosary Congress from October 3- 9, 2020. The Rosary Congress is a week long period of intense, around the clock prayer consisting of Perpetual Adoration and Hourly Rosary, offered in a spirit of reparation. We are joining with other dioceses across the nation to pray for the healing of our Church, our families, and our nation (rosarycongressusa.org).
As the Church suffers from persecu-tion from within and without, as fam life is attacked more viciously than ever before, and as life continues to be threatened in its most vulnerable stages, we need this unified prayer now more than ever.
The Rosary Congress will travel to a different parish for each 24-hour period from October 3 - 9, 2020.
