    FORGIVENESS

Nearly ten years before, a son and father had parted ways when the business they shared went bankrupt. The son blamed the father. They did not speak to each other again. Then the father became seriously ill. The mother called the son and told him he had better come soon. The son walked sheepishly into the hospital room. The father motioned his son to him and whispered: “Did you ever think you could do anything that would keep me from loving you?” Resentment and anger are foul things, the first reading from Sirach tells us. Remember the last things. Stop hating. Live by the commandments. As St. Paul writes to the Romans, we are to live for the Lord and die for the Lord.

Jesus’ parable in today’s Gospel reminds us of God’s compassion. The immense sin of humanity has been forgiven and stricken from the record. We are to forgive others in the same way. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR Why does God require us to forgive "our brother" or "our sister"? The First Reading tells us: you will not suffer God's wrath; your sins will be forgiven; and you will be healed. Jesus repeats the necessity of forgiveness when he tells Peter to forgive his brother "seventy-seven times"; essentially forever and to do so from the heart. To forgive others, even those unrelated to us by family bonds or religious faith, manifests the mercy of God. While we are morally permitted to seek and obtain jus-tice against those who have hurt us, we are required to do so with a merciful heart. God will help us but we have to ask for his assistance or his grace. May we al-ways be willing to forgive those who have offended us!

    *****************************************

Precautions at Mass The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston requests the follow-ing:

    1. All attendees must wear a mask. 2. There must be an empty pew in front and back of you. 3. Unless you are attending with a friend or family there must be 6 feet of space between you and the nearest person. 4. At communion time we will process up the main aisle with 3 feet of separation, leave our facemasks on, receive Communion in the hand, walk away about 10 feet, then consume the Blessed Sacrament, and return to your pew. 5. After Mass please use the disinfectant in the vestibule to sanitize your hands. 6. The pews will be disinfected after each Mass. I know these requirements will be a discomfort for you and I. Let us offer our discomfort to God for the end of the Coro-navirus outbreak. Thank you!
