The Most Holy Trinity June 11, 2017
A Note from Deacon John Happy Trinity Sunday! This Sunday is also known among preachers as Heresy Sunday. It is called this because of the complexity of trying to explain the Trinity and doing it successfully. Common wisdom is that if you discuss
the trinity for longer than a few minutes you will likely slip into heresy because you are probing the depths of God too deeply. Two years ago, after telling myself that I would never preach on the Trinity, I had the opportunity to preach on Trinity Sunday. To the best of my knowledge, no one spoke to Fr, Dale or wrote to the Pope calling my preaching heretical on that day! All kidding aside, this is the day when Catholic Christians remember and honor the belief of an eternal God consisting of three persons, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Many churches and choirs across the world plan special activities centered on this day. There are choral vesper concerts, special music featuring trumpets and pipe organs; meals and social events. Some churches even save this day to give out recognition awards. Historically, the Catholic church has been celebrating the Trinity in its life and worship since the earliest days. The earliest known liturgies include many references to the persons of the trinity in their prayers and use of the Trinitarian baptismal formula familiar to us. Over time, dioceses and churches began celebrating the feast of the Trinity locally. Early local feasts dates included the first Sunday after Pentecost or the first Sunday before Advent. Both Sundays were symbolic. The post-Pentecost dated celebrated the Trinity as the final celebration of the church year after Christ’s resurrection, ascension and the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The pre-Advent date (no longer observed) began the Church year with the celebration of the Trinity, the source of all creation. Both dates demonstrate the importance of the Trinity as the foundation, beginning and end of Christian belief and experience. Pope John XXII established the feast day for universal observance in the Western Church in 1334 A.D. on the present date, the Sunday after Pentecost. In addition to the yearly observance of Trinity Sunday, the Church’s weekly, daily, and hourly worship is strongly Trinitarian in nature. Trinity Sunday has been especially popular in England since Thomas Becket was consecrated on Trinity Sunday in 1162. I hope you enjoyed reading the history of this blessed Sunday. I enjoyed researching it. I played it safe…this article is heresy free! May God bless you, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of Holy Spirit. Amen.
