Fr. Gerard’s Corner At his Passion, Jesus was judged by the religious establishment for blasphemy and by the secular authorities for sedition. Today, Jesus teaches what the real judgment will be about—simple, straightforward observations about practical charity: feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, welcoming the stranger, clothing the naked, caring for the sick, and visiting the imprisoned. In fact, at this judgment there isn’t even a “sentencing.” The King will simply assign us then the place we’ve already chosen by our decision to perform or to neglect such charity. The only surprise is that care extended or refused to “these least brothers [and sisters] of mine” turns out to have been care extended or refused to the King himself (Matthew

25:40).

Note too how our present attitude will impact our eternal beatitude. In Jesus’ story, the unjust imply that they would have helped, if only they had known who that needy person really was! The just, however, did good for goodness’ sake alone, serving others from the heart, instinctively, spontaneously, like Jesus, with no self-serving ulterior motive, no thought of any reward.

But thankfully, even on Judgment Day, there will be more than reward and punishment. Ezekiel proclaims that the King who comes to judge is still our Good Shepherd—to the very end, intent on “rescuing the scattered, seeking out the lost, bringing back the strays, binding up the injured, healing the sick” (cf. 34:12, 16). Today’s story of the Last Judgment, then, is less a frightening vision of the future and more a practical program for the present. J.S. Paluch Co., Inc.

REFLECION DOMINICAL

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION We celebrate today what is popularly and traditionally called the Feast of Christ the King. This is also the beginning of the last week of our Catholic Liturgical Year, as the New Year be-gins with Advent next Sun-day. We often mention that time is a gift to us; this idea of measuring Church time is also a gift, but do we truly appreciate it?

People tend to say “I go to church.” In reality, Christ does not call us to “go” to church; He calls us to be Church. We should live our lives in such a way that it is clear we are Catholic and Christian and part of Christ’s Kingdom, for He is our King. Were you aware that the name “Christ” is a royal title in itself? In Greek it means “the anointed king.”

St. Paul referred to the Lord as “king of kings and lord of lords,” a phrase with which we are familiar. If we accept Christ as our King, and if we live our lives as His disciples and followers we are certainly part of His Kingdom. Pope Pius XI instituted today’s solemnity in 1925 at a time when many countries were struggling with total loyalty to secular royalty. Pius XI wanted Catholics to recognize that their loyalty was to a higher power, their spiritual king in heaven.

Pius XI wrote at that time, “For Jesus Christ reigns over the minds of individuals by His teachings, in their hearts by His love, in each one’s life by the living according to His law and the imitating of His example.”

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the

training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org
