Quo Vadis – Quo Vadis offers young men entering grades 9-12 the structure of Holy Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, Eucharistic Adoration, time for personal reflection and interaction with priests and seminarians, as well as the fun of activities, sports and fellowship. This year, Bishop Brennan will provide a closing Mass with the attendees and their families. Ultimately, we hope to equip you with the tools and opportunity to discern God’s will in your life. Quo Vadis takes place July 26-29 at the Pontifical College Josephinum, 7625 N. High Street, Columbus. The cost is $40.00 and scholarships are available. Go to [email protected]. Registration deadline is July 16th. Questions? Contact Michael Haemmerle at [email protected].

Message from Father HinterschiedManhood, or machismo is defined as a strong sense of masculinity stressing physical courage, virility, and aggressiveness. It is downplayed as “backwards,” but it is deeply planted in nature. Does it have a place in bringing up boys to be disciples today?Education means “leading out” into whatever is good. And masculinity is good. “Male and female” God made them. Grace purifies and perfects whatever is natural that has been weakened by original sin. So, these traits manifest the Divine genius Who empowered men for a specific and distinctive mission of leadership and service.Today’s demolition of distinct roles, and the epidemics of pornography, absenteeism, and adultery bring about an assault on masculinity (and reflexively, femininity, too). With it came an increase in sexual sins in boys. All societal and cultural ills need to be addressed in the basic unit of the home.Fathers, please encourage the innate masculinity of your sons! Teach them chivalry, leadership, service, courage and self-confidence. Start from their natural tendencies, then purify and perfect it with moral and spiritual virtues.Aggressiveness is faced off against the harsh elements. Dominion is achieved with the power of tools. Courage and virility are used to mess with the trash. Strength is employed in doing the most menial of chores. Rather than competing with girls, teach them to be knights who defend the honor of their sisters. In the process, you’ll teach respect for girls. Finally, make time to bond with your sons – as men. It has been ordained by the Divine for warriors, kings and priests. Gather around the fire and regale each other with stories of chivalry and courage. At the end of the night, lay your swords at the foot of the Lord. So, yes there is room for “machismo.”Fathers, you’ve been awarded membership in the circle of warriors, priests and kings! We, your sons, thank you for your instruction! Happy Father’s Day!-Rev. Fr. Michael Hinterschied, Pastor, St. Patrick Church

Pew Missal – If you would like your own pew missal to bring to Mass please help yourself after Mass in the parlor or stop by the parish office Monday-Friday, from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. There are a few on the table in the back of the church for distribution. Put your name in the pew missal, so in case you leave it behind, we can return it to you. Thank you for your help.Masks – Masks are available in the usher closet if needed. If you prefer to wear one, please bring one from home, thank you.

TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 21, 2020Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 21, 2020

The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. Franciscan Media, Franciscan Friars, www.franciscanmedia.org/solemnity-of-the-nativity-of-saint-john-the-baptist/ (Accessed 11 June 2020).

I Praise You, For I am Wonderfully Made Responsorial Psalm 139:1b-3, 13-14ab, 14c-15

R. I praise you, for I am wonderfully made.

O LORD, you have probed me, you know me: you know when I sit and when I stand; you understand my thoughts from afar.My journeys and my rest you scrutinize, with all my ways you are familiar.R. I praise you for I am wonderfully made.

Truly you have formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb.I give you thanks that I am fearfully, wonderfully made; wonderful are your works.R. I praise you, for I am wonderfully made.

My soul also you knew full well; nor was my frame unknown to youWhen I was made in secret, when I was fashioned in the depths of the earth.R. I praise you, for I am wonderfully made.

St. John the BaptistPatron Saint of Converts, Baptism

Feast Day: August 29

John was a cousin of Jesus Christ and began his ministry around his twenty-

seventh year. He gave up all worldly goods to spread the word of the coming

Savior. He survived during his travels by eating locusts and wild honey. John

brought many believers to the Christian faith. Later, he baptized into the Lord his cousin Jesus and then told his disciples

to follow Christ. Herodias beheaded John because of the words of a jealous

and wicked woman; his head was brought to her on a platter. John was

then buried in Samaria.

Prayer to St. John the BaptistDear Baptizer of the Lord,

I ask for your strength as I try to spread God’s word in my own small way. When I speak of my newfound love for the Lord

to others, let them feel the dedication and respect in my heart. Give me the fortitude to be a good Christian and

help me to help others come to know and accept Christ as well. Amen.

JOHN [THE BAPTIST] CHALLENGES US CHRISTIANS TO THE FUNDAMENTAL ATTITUDE

OF CHRISTIANITY—TOTAL DEPENDENCE ON THE FATHER, IN CHRIST. EXCEPT FOR THE MOTHER OF GOD, NO ONE HAD A HIGHER FUNCTION IN THE

UNFOLDING OF SALVATION. YET THE LEAST IN THE KINGDOM, JESUS SAID,

IS GREATER THAN HE, FOR THE PURE GIFT THAT THE FATHER GIVES. THE ATTRACTIVENESS AS

WELL AS THE AUSTERITY OF JOHN, HIS FIERCE COURAGE IN DENOUNCING EVIL—ALL STEM

FROM HIS FUNDAMENTAL AND TOTAL PLACING OF HIS LIFE WITHIN THE WILL OF GOD.

REFLECTION BY FRANCISCAN FRIARS FRANCISCAN MEDIA

Mother Teresa: On LifeThe first person in the world to welcome Jesus, to recognize him in the womb of his own mother, was a child: John the Baptist.

It is wonderful; God chooses an unborn child to announce the coming of his redeeming Son.
