About the Cover – Pictured on the bulletin cover is the sanctuary lamp of St. Patrick’s Church. It burns as an indication of the Lord’s presence in the Blessed Sacrament reserved within the tabernacle. In every Catholic church or chapel, in which the Blessed Sacrament is kept in the tabernacle, a light burns to indicate Christ’s presence. Our sanctuary lamp was a gift of Thomas R. and Charles Brennan in 1910 at the cost of $100. Photographs indicate that it was in use until the mid-1950s. After that, its whereabouts remain somewhat of a mystery. One story is that it was given to parishioners to use in their home but were unable to do so. Another parishioner, Joe Londergan, who frequented local auctions kept track of the lamp’s movements. In the 2004 renovations of the church, Fr. Sill, pastor, asked that items from its earlier days might be returned for possible re-use. At that time, the sanctuary lamp came home to find that its chain and counterweight were awaiting its return still in place in the ceiling. After an initial cleaning, the sanctuary lamp was re-hung. A few years ago, Fr. Ghiloni had it re-plated along with some minor repairs. Its value in today’s dollars is significantly more than its purchase price!Over the course of time as an outgrowth of our 2016’s 150th anniversary year, we hope to feature other artistic and devotional works within the church that give us a foretaste of heaven.

Parish Safety Committee – Recently, the diocese held a safety meeting that included recommendations that doors that are not monitored during Mass should be locked. Father Hinterschied has asked ushers to lock the Parish Center doors after the first reading begins. The main doors and side entrance door will remain open. If parishioners are running late, they will need to enter through the main door or side door since the Parish Center doors will be locked.

Knights of Columbus Breakfast – Third Sunday after the 7:30 a.m. Mass in the Parish Center from September-May.

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 9, 2020

Message from Father Hinterschied

Evil is a reality and each of us commits evil; we beg God to forgive us our sins and make reparation, and then we start anew by the Father's mercy and grace. By contrast, the secular culture demands constant demonstrations of how "woke" one is and at the same time one can never be truly forgiven. In three weeks, our heads will once again be marked with ashes of penitence. A special time of preparation for Lent emerged in the 6th and 7th centuries and the three Sundays preceding Ash Wednesday were called Septuagesima, Sexagesima, and Quinquagesima, meaning respectively, the seventieth, sixtieth, and fiftieth days before Easter. The First Sunday of Lent is Quadragesima, the beginning of the forty days.

The seventy-day period that begins with Septuagesima recalls Jeremiah's prophecy of the seventy-year exile of Israel in Babylon. It signifies God's delay of mercy to pass from the anguish of sinful Babylon to the beatitude of Jerusalem. “How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?” (Ps 136:4). The seventy days before Easter signify this, and so become a season of hope for all who sit and weep by the waters of Babylon (cf. Ps 136:1).

Sound psychology and practical wisdom indicate the need for a kind of countdown before Ash Wednesday, lest Lent will find us flustered and ill prepared. It is said that Pope St. Paul VI likened these days to ringing bells, calling us to the Church and to prayer. We hear the first of those bells today and we are encouraged to look forward to Lent and to prepare with our hearts for the coming fast, and to begin now to think about both what we will deny of ourselves and what we will take on. Make this Lent the best of your life!

-Rev. Fr. Michael Hinterschied, Pastor, St. Patrick Church
