From the desk of Fr. Ben… 21 October 2018
Fr. Dustin and I joined Bishop John and nearly 30 priests from around our diocese for training at Marygrove this week. The training is run by the
Catholic Leadership Institute, and is called “Good Leaders, Good Shepherds.” There are 7
sessions, and we just completed the 3rd one. The pro-gram is used all over the country, and is designed to give us better self-knowledge as well as formation to lead one-on-one, in teams, in organizations (parishes), and in a multi-organization context.
As I am responsible for two parishes and the vocations of-fice, this training is much needed! It is challenging to think about organizing and leading more efficiently with the simple tools we’re learning, when so much of the time I seem to be just trying to keep my head above water… but I know it’s the right thing to work towards! Please pray for Fr. Dustin and I, and for Bishop John and our whole presbyterate, as we seek to serve and lead well in these challenging times!
In our Gospel this Sunday, Jesus tells us: “Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
We will be taking up a special collection this weekend, at Bishop John’s request, in support of those impacted by the Natural Disasters in the SE, especially Hurricane Mi-chael. The collection will be taken up after communion, or you can use the envelopes in the pews next weekend.
Please pray for Bishop Cistone who died this past week. He was bishop of the Diocese of Saginaw. Please also pray for the diocese as they are in the midst of a number of abuse allega-tions and other difficulties!
Have you been feeling like you need a bit of a break, some time to pray, some time to grow, some time to invest in friendships new and old? Our Fall Campus Ministry Re-treat is r ight around the corner on Oct. 26-28. We’ll be join-ing students from NMU, LSSU, and around the UP for the weekend, and our retreat speakers are Crystal and Joseph Gruber: “Dating like a Catholic”! This year the cost is only $40! Sign up after Mass!
N.B. Due to the retreat departure, Confessions next Fri-day (Oct. 26) will be at 11:30 pm, and Mass will be at 12:15 pm.
Now is also the time to sign up for SEEK 2019, the na-tional FOCUS conference in Indianapolis, Jan. 3-7, 2019. It’s only $399 through the end of the month, but prices will go up after that. Our FOCUS missionaries will help any students who want to raise the funds with a simple letter-writing pro-cess. This is a GREAT opportunity to go deeper in your faith! Talk to Fr. Ben, Fr. Dustin, Sr. Jacqueline, or any of the FO-CUS Missionaries to learn more! Sign up now… and invite your friends!!!
This coming week I will be visiting our seminarians at Sa-cred Heart Seminary in Detroit for the first part of the week with Bishop John. Next weekend, Fr. Dustin will be helping lead the Youth Encounter Retreat at Marygrove, and I will be at the Campus Ministry Retreat at Bay Cliff Health Camp. Fr. Aaron Nowicki (another St. Al’s alumnus) will be coming to cover Masses!
