Sixth Sunday of Easter May 26,2019

I have a friend who served our country as a Marine. Whenever he is really sure about something he will use the expression: "I have no doubt in my military mind." This usually

means that there is little chance of convincing him otherwise about the matter at hand. It's when the sergeant comes out in him! Recently I read an article in the New York Times about the military mind - or more specifically, about military mindfulness. The report included the thoughts of Army Major General Piatt, Commander of the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum. Piatt served in numerous assignments all over the world and completed several operational deployments to include Suriname, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. The major general recounted a time that he was involved in a delicate diplomatic mission in Iraq and needed to be focused as he undertook a delicate conversation with a tribal leader. He achieved that focus through meditation. In the end, he said, mindfulness allowed him to "reduce conflict by better understanding." "I'm not saying, be soft," he added. "I'm saying, understand how compassion and empathy can be used for real advantages." He continued: "peace takes a lot of hard work." I share this with you on this Memorial Day weekend to honor all the hard work being done by our women and men in the armed services as they strive to keep the peace throughout the world. We do not want to take for granted all the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual energy that our troops expend in serving our country. God bless them and keep them in His constant care. Of course the heart of our Memorial Day celebration is a profound gratitude for all the men and women who gave their lives in service of our great nation. The courageous souls show us that not only does peace take a lot of hard work, but that sometimes it takes sacrificing your life for the good of your fellow citizens and for the protection of their freedom. In a culture where many people are caught up with the concern of "what's in it for me" there is the constant danger that those who put others before themselves could be forgotten and unappreciated. Memorial Day reminds us that this cannot and must not happen. And so today let us pray for the souls of departed soldiers that they may rest in peace. Let us honor their memories by responsibly using the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. Let us advance the cause of peace by letting it begin with me and begin with you.

Let us be grateful - today and every day!

You are invited to celebrate the gift that Fr. Przemek has been to our parish on the weekend of June 8 and 9. At all the masses that weekend we will bless Fr. Przemek and send him forth with our love and prayers to his new assignment as Head Chaplain of Morristown Memorial Hospital. On Sunday, June 9, Father Przemek will celebrate the 10:30 a.m. Mass which will be followed by a reception in the school gym. All are welcome!

Stewardship

The concept of hospitality is fundamental to a stewardship way of life. When we envision hospitality, we naturally think of offering a sincere and warm welcome - to those new to our parish. Today's Gospel reading invites us to think of hospitality in a slightly different way. We hear Jesus asking that we permit the Blessed Trinity to come and dwell within us. This is a stunning request. It tells us that our first and most privileged

form of hospitality should be directed towards God Himself. How do we do that? Ask the Holy Spirit to show you when and how you can get to know God’s word in your particular circumstances and then commit to it! Simple practices of daily prayer, Bible study and reading faith-based books can radically change one’s life. We will begin to more easily think like Jesus, respond like Jesus, and live like Jesus. We really will form our minds, hearts and souls into a place where the Blessed Trinity is pleased to dwell. If we want our parish to be a place of genuine Christian hospitality, we must be sure that our own hearts are hospitable dwelling places for the Blessed Trinity. Then, our smiles and words, our greetings and ministries, will radiate with the warmth of God’s love. And, our parish family will become at least a little bit like Heaven on earth. This is the simplicity and glory of a stewardship way of life.

The Trip of a Lifetime: Make a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land NB: This pilgrimage has been rescheduled for February 9 - 18, 2020

Anytime is the perfect opportunity to travel to the homeland of Jesus. Our pilgrimage, led by Father Darwin Lastra and Jan Figenshu, will change you forever. Each group is a unique and intimate community which allows us to experience the special places of the Gospels in a new and more intimate way. Ask any of our parishioners who have gone on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and they will agree:: Traveling to the homeland of Jesus changes you forever.

The benefits of making this trip are plentiful: experience a spiritual awakening, discover the land of the Bible, gain a deeper insight and understanding of Scripture. Be transformed in ways you cannot even begin to imagine. This trip is YOUR time. We look forward to experiencing Nazareth, Mt Tabor, the Jordan River, a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, the way of the Cross, the birthplace of Jesus, the streets of Jerusalem, and witnessing the empty tomb with you. We will stand in the sites of the Scriptures and walk in the footsteps of Jesus. Join us!! You will never be the same and you most certainly will not regret it. For more information, contact Jan Figenshu at [email protected] or ext 253.

mío, ¿por qué me has abandonado?.

oraciones de la Biblia, especialmente de los Salmos;
