Lenten2016Guidelines

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. Fasting is to be observed by all persons 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. Abstinence is observed by all persons 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fasting or abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.

Lent at St. Bridget Parish

The Light Is On For You: Please come to the Sacrament of Reconciliation this Lent — The Church encourages all Catholics to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation each Lent. In addition to our normal Saturday afternoon confession time, St. Bridget Parish and all the Catholic parishes and chapels of the Archdiocese will be open on Lenten Wednesdays from 6:30-8:00pm, with the exception of March 9th, when confessions will be heard during the Parish Mission. Please take advantage of this opportunity to make a good Lenten confession. Please also reach out to Catholics you know who have been away from the regular practice of our faith and invite them to seize this chance to begin again. The Archdiocese’s website for this initiative, www.TheLightIsOnForYou.org, has great materials to help everyone prepare to make a good confession.

Stations of the Cross: Stations of the Cross will be held each Friday during Lent at 7:30pm in the Upper Church. Please join us each Friday as we make a spiritual pilgrimage of prayer, through meditating upon the chief moments of Christ's suffering and death.

Jubilee of Mercy Pope Francis has called on Catholics to “rediscover” the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy during this Year of Mercy so that we can enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel and live as true disciples of Jesus. Here are some monthly suggestions and simple ways to live out each of these works in solidarity with the prayer intentions for the month. February—Universal Intention: Care for Creation That we may take good care of creation-a gift freely given-cultivating and protecting it for future generations. Heal the Sick (Corporal Work of Mercy) Take an otherwise homebound neighbor or relative for a drive where they can see the beauty of nature and God’s creation. Financially support the efforts of Catholic Relief Services to provide safe drinking water to those in areas without it. Evangelization Intention: Asia That opportunities may increase for dialogue and encounter between the Christian faith and the peoples of Asia. Instruct the Ignorant (Spiritual Work of Mercy). Use time you would ordinarily spend in front of a computer or television to expand your understanding of an Asian culture and its connections to Christianity. March—Universal Intention: Families in Difficulty That families in need may receive the necessary support and that children may grow up in healthy and peaceful environments. Visit the Imprisoned (Corporal Work of Mercy). Volunteer at a youth center or after-school program that serves children in need. Cook a meal for a family in need or with a sick child. Evangelization Intention: Persecuted Christians That those Christians who, on account of their faith, are discriminated against or are being persecuted, may remain strong and faithful to the Gospel, thanks to the incessant prayer of the Church. Comfort the Afflicted (Spiritual Work of Mercy) Learn more about the plight of Christians in the Holy Land and inform others about what is happening to them. Offer a daily prayer for all persecuted Christians.

Sacrament of Baptism Before an infant baptism parents must attend a baptismal catechesis class. Classes are held on the first Friday of each month at 7pm in the Rectory Meeting Room. If there is a change due to bad weather parents will be notified. Participants should park in the Rectory parking lot and enter the door on that level. *Dates for baptism are set once the class has been attended and all paperwork is received and complete. Baptisms take place once a month on a Sunday at 2pm. To register for class or to ask a question call 508-875-6009.

Sacrament of Marriage Arrangements should be made with one of the priests at least one year prior to the intended date of marriage so that all requirements can be completed. Please Note: Saturday weddings can be celebrated from 10:00am to 1:00pm at the latest. Sunday weddings can be celebrated from 1:30pm to 4:00pm at the latest.

Pastoral Ministry Visitations to the sick and the homebound are made by Pastoral Visitors who bring the Blessed Sacrament and offer spiritual befriending on a weekly basis. If a member of your family, or friend, or neighbor is in the hospital or is home-bound, we would appreciate hearing from you. Kindly call the Pastoral Ministry Office at 508-875-6009 to request assistance.
