TheElijahCupOur parish has a beautiful ministry dedicated in prayerful support of vocations – The Elijah Cup Ministry. The Elijah Cup is a consecrated chalice taken home for one week, rotated at each Mass. There is also the monthly chalice given at every First Friday Devotion Mass. Each carrying case comes with a chalice, instructions, a selection of prayers, Rosary, book, and spiritual journal to share the experiences felt while praying for those called to religious life. A receiving family or individual displays the chalice in a prominent place at home and prays for an increase of men and women called to religious vocations: priests, deacons, seminarians and sisters. We always need families and individuals to pray for vocations. What a blessing …so let this chalice journey to your home and thank you for the prayerful consideration! Please look for the sign-up sheet in the narthex. For more information, please contact: Dee Hidalgo Elijah Cup Ministry Coordinator St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church 404-374-4920 [email protected] ReceptionOf iceHours:St Francis offers of ice reception hours to help better accommodate you and your family. CatechistsNeeded Faith Formation is in need of Catechists as well as classroom assistants for the 2018-2019 Faith Formation year! Our Faith Formation program serves students in grades 1-12 as well as our preschool aged children through the Sunday nursery program. All volunteers and catechists are required to pass a criminal background check and receive Virtus certi ication through the Archdiocese of Atlanta. There will also be a summer catechist training to learn more about our formation program and parish leadership training. While this is an incredibly rewarding opportunity to serve our parish, catechists must be committed to the religious education or our youth. If you are a fully initiated Catholic in good standing with the Church, please prayerfully consider serving as a catechist at St Francis. For more information, please contact Amy Toft, Director of Faith Formation at [email protected] or 770-382-4549 ext 20 FaithFormationRegistrationisnowOPEN!While the family formation experience is the most important religious education that your child could ever undertake, it is our role as Church to help support and encourage you as parents as the primary educators of your children. Furthermore, sacramental reception and participation in weekly Sunday mass is foundational to living a holy, Catholic life which our catechesis is built upon. For this reason, we strongly encourage continuous faith formation of your children and offer religious education classes for grades 1-12. Please take special note that weekly mass attendance is required as part of our program. Faith Formation Registration for the 2018-2019 academic year is now open! Registration packets are being distributed after faith formation classes in the carpool line. Packets may also be picked up in the parish of ice after Mass or in the Faith Formation of ice throughout the week. Please carefully read the program information, complete all paperwork and return the forms with your family payment to the Faith Formation of ice NO LATER than June 2018 to ensure your child’s placement. Spots ill quickly so please enroll now. For questions, please contact our Faith Formation Of ice for program details. We look forward to serving you and your family.

6thSUNDAYOFEASTER "I have called you friends." Authentic friendship can seem hard to come by these days, especially in our transient society. We move away from family, change jobs, switch parishes, and end up in entirely new places with entirely new people. When we look for new friends, we all have different qualities we're looking for. While we may think of certain standards of behavior necessary to be a "good" friend, we would hardly refer to them as rules or "commandments." In fact, if a friendship or romantic relationship--new or old--becomes characterized by imposed obligations, we would rightly be suspicious. Friendships, we understand, ought to be characterized by freedom. We love the person, even sacri ice for them at times because, within ourselves, we want to maintain the friendship. So why does Jesus use the language of command as he calls the Apostles his friends? "You are my friends if you do what I command you." Jesus is radically transforming the concept of commandment. In the Jewish heritage of the Apostles, they would hear the word "command" and immediately think of the strict Levitical law and distance from God. In introducing the language of friendship, Jesus ties "commandment" to inner freedom of heart. The disciples have this freedom precisely because they know "what [the] Master is doing." Jesus has invited his followers into intimate friendship all along. He shares openly with them. He has patience with their laws. He isn't scandalized by their failures. He celebrates their successes. We, too, have been called by love and invited into a relationship with Jesus. It is you and I that Jesus chooses and appoints. He does so personally, not from a distant mountain shrouded in clouds. This "new commandment" to "love one another" is received around the shared table in the breaking of the bread.

GOSPELMEDITATIONENCOURAGEDEEPERUNDERSTANDINGOFSCRIPTURE

LIVETHELITURGYINSPIRATIONFORTHEWEEK"Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love." So many people hunger for love. All of us desire to be intimately connected with others, God, and our world. Many things can work against this and cause us to feel alienated and even profoundly sad. Pope Francis tells us that our "in inite sadness can only be cured by an in inite love." We have been touched by God's love. We are called to bring that love to others so that their sadness and wounds can be healed. We must do this even for those we do not particularly like or who have hurt us. We cannot let anything stand in the way of love. EVERYDAYSTEWARDSHIPRECOGNIZEGODINYOURORDINARYMOMENTS"Get Together" was a popular song in 1967 by the Youngbloods. I was not alive when the song was released, but it was a song I played frequently learning how to play guitar when I was younger. The song called for all of us to come together and "try to love one another right now." It was a song that came out in the Vietnam War era and during somewhat of a hippie revolution, but perhaps the words belong to no real moment in time. They are simply the commands of Jesus. Sometimes we minimize the power of love by cute pop songs and slogans that mean little without action. However, we can never underestimate the power of love. Love can tear down barriers between people, change tears to laughter, and mend relationships torn apart by sin. No option exists for disciples of Jesus Christ to not love others. Not only are we commanded to do so, but love is a gift we must pass on freely. If we give of our time, talent, and treasure, but choose not to love, we cannot claim to be truly committed disciples and good stewards. As this Easter season draws ever closer to an end, we must allow our love to bear witness to the source of all love, the Risen Jesus. This is our calling until, as the words of the Youngbloods' song states, "the one who left us here returns for us at last." --Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
