Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
During the week we said farewell to
Father Kenneth Okorundo, who we
were blessed to have as Associate
Pastor Pro Tem for the month of July.
We pray that he will remember the
beau!ful people of Saint Kateri as he
returns to the Diocese of San
Bernadino. We will miss him.
Thank you, Father Kenneth for sharing your gi#s with us!
This weekend we welcome
Father Miguel Angel Or"z of the Capuchin
Franciscan Order of the California Province.
He was born in San Jose, California in 1959,
has four lovely sisters and jokingly calls
himself "blessed among women.”
Fr. Or!z entered the Capuchin Order at the
age of 17 and was ordained to the
priesthood on the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in
1986. He has served as vice-master of novices, associate
voca!on director, hospital chaplain, and associate pastor in
various places throughout California. As a deacon, he was
one of the first missionaries to northern Mexico in 1985.
He currently serves as Provincial Secretary, Capuchin
Mission Director and Chairman of the Senior Care
Commi+ee for the Province. He s!ll considers himself
blessed as he helps care for the sick and serves others with
a smile and good sense of humor.
Addi!onally, we welcome Father
Conegundo Garganta. “Fr. Kune” as
he likes to be called, is the Execu!ve
Secretary for the Episcopal Commission
on Youth in the Philippines. He is here
in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for
the Mission Coop Appeal at Saint
Brendan and Saint Bellarmine.
As a good friend for many years, I requested that he extend
his missionary voca!on to our parish community un!l
mid-September. Please offer a warm Saint Kateri welcome
to Father Kune and Father Or!z.
Meanwhile, we con!nue to await the
arrival of our incoming Associate
Priest, Father Deusdedit Kirunda
Najja
God’s Peace,
Pastor, Fr. Albert Avenido

MISSION COOPERATIVE APPEAL
This weekend, we have the opportunity to make a dona!on
to the Mission Coopera!ve Plan.
This annual appeal is one that helps unite the Archdiocese
of Los Angeles with the Universal Church spreading mission
awareness among people of the archdiocese.
To that end, please extend a warm Saint Kateri welcome to
Fr. Miguel Angel Or!z of the Capuchin Franciscan Order of
the California Province who will provide details of his
missionary work.
Your tradi!onally generous response is a reflec!on of the
ongoing awareness and concern for the people of the
world. Thank you.
THANK YOU JANET RIVAS
A#er four years of dedicated service,
Janet Rivas has decided to leave her role as
Childcare Coordinator of the Ark to focus
on other areas of her life. Janet has served
our parish families with young children since the Ark first
opened.
We appreciate and thank Janet for sharing her gi#s and
send her off with our blessings as she embarks on new
adventures as a missionary disciple. Please extend your
thanks and apprecia!on when you see Janet.
Janet, thank you, farewell and God’s peace.
Prayer Glorious Saint Joseph, model of all those who are devoted
to labor, obtain for me the grace to work in a spirit of pen-
ance for the expia!on of my many sins;
To work conscien!ously, pu$ng the call of duty above my
inclina!ons;
To work with gra!tude and joy, considering it an honor to
employ and develop,
by means of labor, the gi#s received from God;
To work with order, peace, modera!on and pa!ence, with-
out ever recoiling before weariness and difficul!es;
To work, above all, with purity of inten!on,
and with detachment from self, having always death before
my eyes and the account which I must render of !me lost,
of talents wasted, of good omi+ed, of vain complacency in
success, so fatal to the work of God.
All for Jesus, all for Mary, all a#er your example, O Patri-
arch Joseph. Such shall be my watchword in life and in
death. Amen.

PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN When shouldn’t you be your child’s “friend”?
As parents, we want to be close to our
children — such closeness is not to be
confused with being our children’s friend,
though. Our children need us to be role models, authority
figures AND trusted confidants. This can be a difficult
balance, but we cannot let our desire to be close to our
children blind us to when they need a strong, reliable adult
to tell them what’s right and wrong. Parent/child
rela!onships are not built on equality like friendships.
Parents have life experience and wisdom that children do
not, which gives you more insight and authority in a given
situa!on. Parents also have the responsibility to make
unpopular decisions in their children’s best interests, and
this is important to help your children grow up.
For more informa!on, check out the VIRTUS® ar!cle “What
makes a friend? Part 3 — When Should a Parent Not be an
Older Child’s ‘Friend’?” at h+p://www.la-archdiocese.org/
org/protec!ng/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Ar!cles.aspx.
AS DISCIPLES OF JESUS WE ARE CALLED TO
PROTECT GOD’S CHILDREN
All the Catholic churches in our Archdiocese of Los Angeles
are commi+ed to working to protect children. Our parish
vision is to become inten!onal disciples of Jesus. Part of
our discipleship is to do all we can to protect children and
all who are vulnerable. Will you hear Jesus’ call to do this?
All ministry leaders and volunteers working with youth and
children must be VIRTUS cer!fied.
Please come to the Virtus-Protec"ng God’s Children
Workshop at Saint Kateri on Monday, August 5, 2019, at
6:30 pm in Sla%ery Hall. If all Saint Kateri adults 18 years
and older par!cipated in a Virtus Workshop, we could
make an incredible difference in the Santa Clarita Valley in

VIRTUS – KEEPING THE Promise Alive (Recer"fica"on)
Monday, September 9 at 7:00 – 8:30 pm, Sla%ery Hall.
The Transfiguration Luke 9:28-36 When pondering The Transfigura!on, I couldn’t help but
think of our teens and adult youth ministers who served on
Teens On A Mission and/or who went to last weekend’s Life
Teen Retreat. I am sure each disciple on those trips had
their own “Mountain top” experiences of Jesus. And, I am
just as sure that much like Peter, James and John, most of
them wished they could have stayed immersed in those
Holy moments. When we experience God’s loving presence
in big and powerful ways, we don’t want those experiences
to end. When Peter, James and John came down from the
mountain they needed !me to process what they had wit-
nessed. What did they learn about Jesus? What were they
supposed to do with what they learned? Our own disciples
probably have been doing a lot of processing of their
Mountain Top experiences of Jesus. They certainly have
stories to share. If you run into one of our teens or youth
ministers, don’t just ask them “Did you have a great retreat
or a great mission trip?” Instead say, “Tell me about a
moment when you just knew Jesus was in the middle of
what was happening.” Then be prepared to spend some
listening to a beau!ful story of God.
Something To Ponder: In prayer, ask the Holy Spirit to
bring to mind an experience you have had that felt packed
with God’s glory. Ask what Jesus might want to say to you
today through that memory? Is the memory just for you?
Could it also be helpful to someone else?

Dear Families & Friends of Youth Ministry,
It is with a heavy heart (and simultaneously an op!mis!c hope) that I must communicate the following news to you.
For an indefinite period of !me, I must go on leave and step back from the full-!me du!es of youth ministry at Saint
Kateri Parish. Unfortunately, my current government work permit has expired. Due to various reasons, many of which are
outside of anyone's control, I am s!ll awai!ng the arrival of the updated work permit. Un!l that !me comes, I must step
down from being an employee of the parish.
For the !me being, I will be serving on a volunteer basis direc!ng the forma!on and execu!on of our parish's
Confirma!on prepara!on process. The administra!ve and communica!ve aspects of youth ministry are fully being
delegated to Bonnie Bulder ( [email protected] ) and Elisabel Cas!llo-Lozano
( [email protected] ) of the Faith Forma!on office. All other branches of youth ministry outside
of Confirma!on will be led and directed completely by their respec!ve ministry coordinators.
I would like to assure each of you that this !me of leave, though indefinite, is not permanent. I fully intend to return as
the full-!me youth minister of the parish once all is resolved. I will s!ll be around the parish volunteering for a few hours
each week, and if you see me, please don't hesitate to say hi! I thank you all in advance for your prayers, support, and
love during this !me. God bless you always and may we all draw closer to Christ each day.
In His Most Sacred Heart,
Gian Gamboa
